This list contains 169 species of birds observed by biologists with the Wildlife Commission. Some species were observed on land adjacent to the game land. Bird data for the game land are incomplete, and the checklist may not contain all credible sightings.

Sandy Mush Game Land is a state-owned, 2,795-acre game land located in Buncombe and Madison Counties. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission actively manages the tract with prescribed fire to provide quality early successional habitat. This area is home to several of North Carolina’s bird Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Turn left onto Fletcher Martin Road, cross the French Broad River, and continue to Cedar Hill Road. • To Cedar Hill Rd parking lots: Right on Cedar Hill Rd; look for pull offs north along Cedar Hill Rd. •  To Martin Candler parking lot: From Cedar Hill Rd, west on Martin Candler Rd; continue west 0.7 miles to Martin Candler Rd parking area on right. • To Turkey Creek parking lot: From Cedar Hill Rd west onto Old Hwy 20/Marshall Rd to Turkey Creek parking area on the left. • To Bear Creek Rd parking lot: West on Old Hwy 20/Marshall Rd; left onto Jarrett Farm Road. Continue west 0.3 miles; turn right onto Bear Creek Rd. At 1 mile, left into parking area for the clear-cut.
