If you’re wanting to find out what the devil is going to ______, find out what he has already _________. IIf f you are unaware of Satan’s schemes and his battleplan—you will get hammered every art of what makes the devil s uch an effective liar is that he’s extremely smart. H e knows our time. P Part He strengths, our weaknesses, and the things we “like” with it comes to sin. Satan’s Four-‐fold Pattern: attern: ________________ >>> >>> _________________ ________________ >>> >>> _________________ ________________ >>>> >> __________________ _________________ ________ ________________ _________________ Satan starts with distraction but it always ends with destruction because that’s his ultimate purpose. All the way back to the book of Genesis 3, we find Satan’s 6 biggest lies. Satan’s entire system i s n a a lie. Every lie that has ever been told is s pawned from the “Father of lies.” The 6 built on foundational lies that Satan gives to Adam and Eve i n this passage i s the basis for all of the deception he is seeking to work in the world today. We need to understand that Satan is very _______________________. His pattern and strategy for tempting us has not changed since the Garden of Eden.
LIE #1 – _____________ DOES NOT ___________
Charles Baudelaire said, “My dear brethren, do not ever forget…that the loveliest trick of the Devil is to persuade you that he does not exist.” One of Satan’s most important lies is to get people to be convinced that he is nothing more than a fable. For believers, he wants us to think that his existence shouldn’t matter because he can’t do anything to us. If an enemy isn’t perceived as real or as a threat – then it is much easier for the enemy to attack and do damage. Genesis 3:1, “Now the serpent was more subtle than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say…” Eve seems totally unfazed by what she’s seeing and hearing. The Devil had achieved his objective of sneaking up on Eve without her knowing that it was actually Lucifer in snake’s clothing. SURVEY: Pollsters asked whether they agreed that Satan is “not a living being but a symbol of evil.” 62% of Americans agreed with that statement. Vs. 3:1 – “Subtle” – Satan’s lies are not that obvious on the surface. The best _________ are the ones that most closely resemble the _________________. Satan would rather you ____________ a wrong thing (believe a lie) than to do a wrong thing. WHY? Because the thought is the _______________ of the deed. You can do the wrong thing by mistake and then never do it again. But if you believe the wrong thing, you will c ontinue in that pattern of behavior. BIBLICAL TRUTH TO COMBAT THE LIE: “Be sober-‐minded; be watchful. Your adversary t he devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8).
LIE #2 – GOD IS ______________ ________ ON YOU
Have you ever wondered if maybe, just maybe, you’ve given up too much in order to follow Jesus? Do you ever feel that living an obedient life means that you’re missing out on something? Vs. 1, “Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden.” What did God really say in Genesis 2:16? Back up to 2:16 – “From any tree of the Garden you may eat freely.” God gave Adam his freedom and then followed it with one restriction (not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil). Satan did not want Even focused on the God-‐given freedom; he wanted her to focus on the one restriction. One of Satan’s favorite lies is based on ____________________. From the v ery beginning Satan has been trying to tell us that we don’t have what we need to really be happy. If the devil can get you thinking negatively about God, he’s already got you. Instead of focusing our attention on all that God has given us, Satan makes us zero i n on what we don’t have or on the prohibitions of God. We need to understand that when God gives a prohibition against something; it is so H e can give us more _____________________. When God says “NO” to one thing, i t i s because He wants to say “YES” to so much more!
BIBLICAL TRUTH TO COMBAT THIS LIE: Psalm 84:11, “For t he LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk u prightly.”
LIE #3 – GOD CAN NOT BE ______________
Vs. 4, “You will not surely die…” He was telling Eve that s he shouldn’t believe what God had clearly said. He was telling her that God’s Word should not be trusted. A.W. Tozer said, “No religion can rise higher than its concept of God.” One of Satan’s greatest tools is ________________. Satan likes to show up when bad things happen to good people and ask “If God is so loving, why did He allow this to happen?” Satan is never intimidated by our influence, gifts, or abilities. But there is one weapon at our disposal that he is intimidated by – our use of the __________ of ___________. The devil has no answer for the true Word of God spoken in faith. Satan’s first step was to get Eve to think negatively about God and then his next step was to get her to think skeptically about God.
LIE #4 – SIN CARRIES NO ____________________
Vs. 4, “You will not surely die” the serpent said to the woman.” We must clearly understand that violating God’s laws always carries with it consequences. Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.” For every sin, Satan has an _________________. Sin always deceives – those that know the least about sin are always those that are the deepest into it. If you are led by God’s Spirit then you ________ _______ ________________ by the devil even more. If you’re not being tempted by Satan, that’s probably when y ou need to worry about your walk with God. The Devil always fights the c hurch when the church is on the move. When G od opens up the windows of heaven to ____________ us, the Devil will open up the doors of hell to ___________ us.
LIE #5 – YOU CAN BE YOUR ________ _________
Not only did Satan tell her that she wouldn’t die if she ate it but that there would be amazing benefits if she did. Vs. 5, “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Satan basically said, “Eve, you c an never be capable of being all that you ought to be until y ou become autonomous. You don’t need to depend upon God. You are in control of your own destiny.” The appeal of modern secular humanism is that mankind can live and think independently of God (education can solve all of our problems). Another one of Satan’s goals is to get you to disengage from the work of the Lord. Apathy and complacency i n a Christian’s life are great victories for Satan.
LIE #6 – IF IT FEELS ___________, IT CAN’T BE ____________
With all the devil’s lies in Eve’s mind, that tree somehow looked different. Genesis 3:6, “When t he woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. S he also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” Satan wanted Eve to make a decision based on what she felt like doing. When it comes to responding to God, we must put what we _____________ ahead of what we ______________. A recent survey stated that High school teens found that 16% said they make moral decisions based upon what God or the Bible says they s hould do, but 45% said they make theirs based on their experience. I John 2:16, “For a ll that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world.” John tells us that the world offers… • The Lust of the Flesh – That’s your ________________ (The fruit looked good for Eve to eat) • The Lust of the Eyes – That’s your _________________ (the fruit was pleasing to Eve’s eyes) • The Pride of Life – That’s your _______________ (the fruit was desirable to make Eve wise). The secret to overcoming Satan is to respond with the authority of God’s Word. Jesus answered Satan after each temptation: IT IS WRITTEN. If we don’t _____________ the Word of God we can’t _________________ Satan! If the Word is not a part of our lives, Satan cannot be defeated.
