Cover Photo: Fourth of July (Courtesy of Gregory Tinari (@menstyleguide)). There are few holidays that seem to carry more clout the older you get and the Fourth of July is one of them. While we can't pass up the requisite red, white, and blue popsicles or resist a wardrobe color-coded to match, our indulgences have become a bit more adult. For example, perhaps we spike the popsicles and sport a look a little more chic than the American flag shorts we wore each year at camp. It's the luxe way of honoring our country's liberty that we set out to explore in this issue. So, we hope you'll take at least a couple of our recommendations and raise a can of Montauk Brew (made in America, of course!) and toast our forefathers, the country we proudly call home, and the long weekend we've been given to celebrate it. Hear, hear!

emorial Day marks the beginning of the Hamptons season, but for many, the July 4th weekend is when the fun really picks up. This issue of Hamptons Monthly is here to get you ready for it all. With a super-long weekend ahead, we’ve got everything you need to celebrate in style. Looking for the best ways to spend the Fourth? Our roundup of the festivities takes a look at it all, from live music and bar-b-que to beach volleyball, and of course, the best fireworks around. If you are looking for the most patriotic drinks around, Red, White, and Blue Imbibing has the top choices from around the East End. we’ve got an in-depth look at the most American of all fabrics, denim. Jean jackets, slim-fit shorts, and even denim sunglasses will help you look your best. Bar-b-que may be the unofficial food of July 4th, but we’re sharing some of our favorite restaurants to pick up perfect burgers, slow-smoked ribs, even BBQ quesadillas in A Taste of the States. If seafood is your thing, we’ll tell some of our favorite spots to grab a delicious lobster roll or fresh clams and oysters. There are plenty of hot spots all around the Hamptons, but our interview with Zach Erdem and Richie Hosein will give you an insider’s peak at their East End Empire. As the guys behind restaurants 75 Main and Kozu, and nightclub AM Southampton, they’ve got a unique view of the scene. We’re also happy to share with you our first “Jitney Playlist,” curated by Montauk Beach House’s DJ Spiky Phil. is the season! (For barbecue and fireworks, not wreaths and snow, thank goodness.) This Fourth of July, it’s time to play, party, eat, ooh, and ahh in the Hamptons, with sports gatherings, live music, tempting summer fare, and – of course! – pyrotechnics. Here, our Hamptons Fourth of July itinerary…

Take Your ’Cue

Our Roundup of Fun for the Fourth Baron's Cove BBQ Photo by Doug Young 18 HAMPTONSMONTHLY.COM

Hot dogs and hamburgers and potato salad, oh my! The annual Fourth of July BBQ at Baron’s Cove lasts from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday 7/4. If you envisioned your perfect summer gathering, it would look a lot like this annual event, when Chef Matty Boudreau mans the grill, cooking up burgers, brats and hot dogs, alongside local, organic smoked barbecue chicken. Complement the hot food with ice cream treats and chilled fresh watermelon, and you’ve got yourself a party. Wine and cold beer are also available, and live music will keep the party mood flowing all afternoon. Oh, and there’s also the pristine setting: Baron’s sprawling waterfront is perfect for dipping a toe in the waves – just or taking a stroll after a meal al fresco – and after all, if it was good enough for famed Hamptonites from John Steinbeck to Art Garfunkel, it will work just fine for us. (Tuesday, July 4 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.) (Baron’s Cove, 31 W. Water St.,Sag Harbor, 844-227-6672)

Sleep-Away Camp

this is the high water mark of the summer season

One of our ultimate summer crushes, Ruschmeyer’s, gets even better this year: thanks to a new partnership with WorkEatPlay, they’ll host #CampRusch, with a diverse line-up of activities, dining events, live music at on-site club The Electric Eel, and more. Expect beach volleyball tourneys, rental bikes to help you explore Montauk, a pop-up shop hosting a rotating line-up of top-shelf brands, beer from Montauk Brewing…even new staff uniforms, courtesy of Air + Speed Surf. Speaking of surf, there’s no better jumping-off point for an outing to Ditch Plains, and of course, yoga fans will find no shortage of places to practice and group sessions near the shore. (all weekend long; visit www. ruschmeyersmtk.com for programming details) (161 Second House Rd., Montauk, 631-668-2877)

Grucci Fireworks Display Montauk

…Bursting in Air No Independence Day visit to the Hamptons could ever be called complete without a viewing of the annual Grucci Fireworks Display, Stars over Montauk. Set on Umbrella Beach just west of the Village itself, this is the high water mark of the summer season, with prime beach spots snapped up early in the day. No matter; pack a picnic and wait out the crowds. Alternately, Viking Starship will also offer a dinner cruise this year, with a pre-boarding party at Sammy’s on the Harbor beginning at 6 p.m. The boat departs at 7, with a buffet dinner, beer, wine, and live music, stays at sea for the show, then returns to the shore at 11 p.m. For $100, it’s the hottest ticket in town. (Tuesday, July 4 at 9 p.m.) (Umbrella Beach, Montauk)

Let’s Get Loud Nothing says “summer” quite like live reggae music, and you can get your fill this Fourth when reggae fusion act Royal Khaoz performs at Swallow East on Sunday night. The venue is known for their thoughtful menu, which goes way beyond nightclub fare to include Butternut Squash Cappuccino “Soup” and Fresh Burrata with watermelon, candied sunflower seeds, saba and basil, alongside a locally sourced raw bar and several signature preparations of mussels and clams. Grab a meal and stay for the show, which promises an “energetic vibe” and an authentic sound; all of the band’s members are natives of Jamaica. (Sunday, July 2) (474 W. AMERICAN from the heartland to your closet

I

f country and hipster style met halfway to birth a chic brand of gentle coolness, it’d be the classic Americana aesthetic. As a matter of fact, Americana is the best of all worlds, blending denim, gingham, and a bit of rock and roll edge. It’s a look that suits anyone--a comfortable and laid-back sort of trendy that is attainable for any season. In the warmer months, however, it’s particularly accessible; summertime barbecues, picnics, and trips to the beach are all ideal environments to make the strings of Americana really sing.

gingham Gingham is a classic fabric for such an all-American image, conjuring images of check and plaid patterns on billowy buttondowns. For a whimsical take on country girl iconography, J Crew’s Off-the-Shoulder Top in Gingham is just the thing. Available in both sapphire blue or clover green, this checkered number is a bit of Mary Ann’s rusticity along with some spicy Ginger bare shoulder. The short sleeves also have fun ties for extra eye-catching detail. If you’re looking for something a touch more dressed up, Issac Mizrahi’s gorgeous Gingham A-Line Shirtdress is just about perfect. A sublimely comfortable cotton/poly blend A-line shirtdress in classic gingham checks, it’s gloriously modern, yet with a nod to old-fashioned chic, making it ideal for a sunny Sunday brunch.

J.Crew's Off-the-Shoulder Top in Gingham

denim Perhaps at the heart of Americana (and let’s face it, the heart of most trends) is the incredible, wearable, old reliable denim. Not just stylish, it’s everybody’s go-to for comfort and has been since the late 1800’s, when it was invented by Nevada-born tailor Jacob W. Davis, who went on to become known for the worldwide jeans empire, Levi Strauss.

graphic tee

Speaking of Levi’s, they’ve basically got all your denim desires covered, with a super wide variety of cuts and colors on offer. Whether your taste is skinny, slim, or boot cut, they’re all incredibly durable, and that little red flag on the back pocket will have you joining the ranks of over a century’s worth of satisfied customers. In case you’re looking for more than just pants, Levi’s also has a super sexy tailored western shirt, available in 10 different styles (check out the Estate Blue Plaid for a spot-on Americana top).

nautical stripes Nautical Stripes are a time-honored American staple. Whether you’re planning to go for a sail or not, there’s something incredibly on-point about nautical stripes while on a jaunt out in The Hamptons, isn’t there? A great choice for casual wear, glorious goddesses everywhere, from Jackie Kennedy to Julianne Moore, have been seen in them. For a no fuss option, it’s gotta be the C&C California Violet Classic Deep V Tee. For a bit more drama, try Petit Batteau’s Striped Cotton Sailor Sweater, which features copper-colored metal buttons along both shoulders for a nautical top that’s sure to turn heads.

Last but certainly not least is the t-shirt. While you could opt for a solid or a pattern, why not embrace the fun of a weekend getaway? Classic graphic tees are always a great go-to. Pop culture fixtures are printed and ready to go at Gap this season. For an alternative to the typical tee, the Star Wars™ softspun cap-sleeve tee is a bright white piece with the Star Wars logo printed amidst an explosion of stars. If you’re looking for something to bring out your inner child (but with a dash of paradox) there’s an adorable Mickey Mouse graphic tee, cut in a badass sleeveless style. Hollister has also got some slick graphic tees, with pieces featuring Pink Floyd’s The Wall and the Saved by the Bell logo. If you’re looking for something a bit more rockin’, check out Lucky Brand’s awesome Bob Dylan Poster Tee, a white cotton shirt bearing a super cool sketch of the man himself, complete with guitar, harmonica, and his trademark shades. BRAND PROFILE

6 Shore Road “From Resort Wear To Ready To Wear, From AM To PM, From Beach To Bar”

W

ith an idea to capture the essence of a carefree lifestyle year-round, Pooja Kharbanda founded her resort brand 6 Shore Road spanning swimwear, readyto-wear, and accessories with designs inspired by “sun-kissed days spent amongst friends.” It’s that motto that makes it the perfect pop-up boutique at Gurney’s this summer. Pooja is a lifelong traveler but has always found herself by the sea and this summer it’s the Atlantic in Montauk. The designer took a few minutes to share why the brand is a natural fit out East, which celebs have been spotted in her suits, and what at The End she finds most inspiring.

Why does 6 Shore Road fit in with the beachside style of Montauk and how’d you come to partner with Gurney’s for the summer? When asking ourselves the question of where we would like to have a retail space this summer, Montauk immediately came to mind. Montauk exemplifies that free-spirited laid-back vibe. Gurney’s was a natural partner in creating our season-long pop up experience. Once we connected, it was an almost seamless process since they needed a dedicated retail partner and our beachwear and accessories fit the Gurney’s luxury aesthetic. If you had to choose only one bathing suit, one item from the ready to wear collection, and one accessory from 6 Shore Road for the entire summer, what would they be? While lounging at the beach, you would see me in this Summer’s Southport ruffle top & bottom in the Rose Cliff Garden print. For drinks and dinner at Scarpetta Beach, I would pair back the Bayside Jumpsuit in Polka Dot Black with some strappy wedges. I always have my Sunset Lace Beach Bag on hand. It’s the perfect carry-all for my beach accessories. Pick one cover up and tell us how’d you pair it for the pool and then jazz it up to wear out at night. The Ocean Club Cover Up is the perfect transitional piece. It encompasses the simplicity of a cover up, but features fun and flirty details, which makes it ideal for day-to-night. During the day, I would pair it with my Melissa bow flip flops and Ray Ban sunglasses. In the evening, I would trade in my Sunset beach bag for a clutch and the flip flops for my YSL ankle-strap wedges. Who’s one of your favorite celebrities you’ve seen in one of your suits and how’d you find out about it? I actually have two favorites! A girlfriend of mine texted me saying, “I think Malia Obama is wearing one of your rompers!” I had no idea and it was an amazing surprise. My second favorite is Kim Kardashian. She sported a poncho her stylist had pulled at our showroom. The odds of her actually wearing our piece among the countless items in

her closet were small so it was naturally a very exciting moment. What’s your perfect Hamptons day from start to finish? I am an early riser so my day begins at 8am with 30 minutes of meditation on the beach. Afterwards, I would either take a run outside or take a barre class at Fly Barre in East Hampton. After all my hard work, the natural next step is an amazing bacon egg and cheese on gluten free bread from Mary’s Marvelous. I love spending time on the beach so I would head to The Gurney’s Beach Club to soak in the sun. I would spend those few relaxing hours listening to podcasts, enjoying a leisurely lunch and taking some beach strolls. By 4pm, I think it’s time for a glass of rose. After freshening up, I would enjoy a late dinner with friends at an old favorite, Sotto Sopra, in Amagansett. A trip to the Hamptons is not complete without a cruise to the Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island. Sunset Beach, located on Shore Road, is the inspiration behind the brand. I would spend summers on Shelter Island and was truly moved by the beautiful beaches and the way being by the ocean made me feel. The line has been inspired by your many travels and time spent living abroad in India, Hong Kong, and Panama. What about Montauk gives you inspiration that you’ll incorporate into future collections? While travel has been an integral part of my development as both a person and a designer, the brand was inspired by my connection with Sunset Beach. While subsequent collections have been inspired by beaches around the world, each boasting its own unique natural landscape, color palate and cultural flavor, Sunset Beach remains at the core of the brand’s ethos. After spending so much time in Montauk, I have found countless elements of inspiration from the surf culture to the history. I find the Montauk Point Light especially inspiring. Weekends out East allow you to let your hair down, but there’s no reason why you can’t look good. While you’ve had your hair carefully coifed all week at the office, maybe embrace some beach-blown wildness with some of these exquisite products recommended by stylist Omar Felix of Flow Hair Boutique in SoHo.

Sea Salt Spray

To bring some beach goddess texture to your tresses, a sea salt spray is just the thing. Felix’s go-to is Wild Stylers Beach Waves Texturizing Salt Spray. “This one I love when you want a ton of texture. It’s a little heavy, but gives you a true beach look.” Simply spray on dry or wet hair, scrunch up with your hands, and run your fingers through.

KOHLER

Frizzy hair is the bane of many and can be a sad state of affairs when left untended. L’Oreal’s Absolut Repair Lipidium Nourishing Serum is a regenerative and fortifying product that keeps the frizz away. “The serum controls the frizz,’” Flex says. But he celebrates it with a bit of warning for those with a propensity for being overzealous. “The only problem is people tend to overuse the product,” he continues. Moral of the story? A little bit goes a long way.

Life gets busy, and washing your hair every single morning before you walk out the door can be a tall order. Enter dry shampoo, which has become a game changer for those on the go. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo absorbs oil, sweat, and odor. As an added bonus, there’s a time-release clean-scented fragrance that lasts all day long. It’s for all hair types and doesn’t leave behind the residue that can happen with other dry shampoos.

Leave-in Conditioner Let’s face it, sometimes our hair needs a little added help after we’re done washing and drying. L’oreal’s Absolut Repair Cellular LeaveIn Unisex Conditioner is just the right kind of rescue to bolster everything that happens to your hair. It’s a wearable dose of nourishment for your locks, immediately softening it down to the fibers.

Dry Finishing Spray L'oreal Tecni Art Wild Stylers Next Day Hair Dry Finishing Spray is luxurious game changer for getting your freak on. Not quite a dry shampoo, not quite hairspray, Omar Felix loves this stuff. “It gives your hair a natural disheveled look.” Just spray it on the root area to hold volume.

DENIM America's Favorite Fabric D enim: it’s become an iconic look for a variety of rock ’n’ roll styles, from Bruce Springsteen’s down-home image, Kurt Cobain’s rough and torn badassery, and James Taylor’s bellbottoms. As you celebrate The Fourth this summer, join the ranks of these American icons in the country’s most signature look.

SLIM FITS Slim fit jeans are majorly on trend at the moment and don’t show any sign of going anywhere. Two of the biggest names in denim, Levi’s and Gap, offer reliable and long-lasting versions of slim fit jeans that will get you looking streamlined. Gap’s Technical Slim 6-Pocket Jeans sit a bit lower at the waist and are made of a super durable cotton denim. Levi’s 511 Slim Fit Stretch jeans not only have some nice give in the fabric but are also available in a variety of colors, allowing you to change things up.

UNEXPECTED ACCESSORIES

Denim has been used to make some sweet accessories. With their commitment to charity in the Third World, Tom’s slip ons have become a trendy alternative to loafers and espadrilles. Their classic alpargatas are available in a deep blue denim upper with some creamy brown leather detailing. Ray Ban has also jumped on the denim bandwagon, offering sleek sky blue wayfarer shades, which are made of 100% genuine denim (after two years of technical research) and are available at Brooks Brothers. And if you’re looking for a great man’s bag to tote around all your necessaries, check out Michael Kors' super functional Reversible Mason Denim Tote, which can instantly transform from strong, dark denim into soft, beige suede. Its leather detailing is epically stylish, and the spacious interior will make it just the thing for your weekend on the East End.

JEAN JACKETS What’s more punk rock than a great jean jacket? They were fashioned for the working man, and through the sixties, seventies, eighties, and onward they have remained on the forefront of casual cool. Of course, Levi’s has got a wide variety of denim jacket options, but their Trucker Jacket is a modern-day take on the iconic original. With all the classic washes you love, these are durable, and since they show no sign of ever going out of style, are made for the long haul. For a bit of texture, Brooklyn Cloth’s vintage-styled version comes outfitted with some eyecatching enamel pins and worn-in detailing. If your tastes are a bit more edgy, Topman’s Blue Distressed Denim Jacket comes made with ripped and distressed detail across the entire garment so you can embrace your inner rocker.

in humidity How to Get Hair that Beats the Heat Taking care of your hair is a top priority, and to make sure you get the ultimate of the ultimates, we asked NYC hairstylist Omar Felix of the sleek SoHo salon Flow Hair Boutique to weigh in on his picks for the best products to get you looking your best.

Moisturizing Shampoo Another blissfully scented product, Omar’s pick for moisturizing shampoo is Kevin.Murphy’s Hydrate Me Wash Kakadu Plum Infused Wash and Rinse. “This stuff is very hydrating,” Omar says. “They put a lot of moisture in your hair.” With a philosophy that takes its cue from skincare, the Hydrate Me Wash is great for weekends at the beach because it restores and repairs hair from sun, sand, and salt damage without compromising the integrity of your hair. It’s all about fortification so you can enjoy luscious locks without any fuss.

Sea Salt Spray First up: Omar’s pick for a great sea salt spray is Kevin.Murphy’s Hair Resort Spray, which instills a sublime beach look while keeping things super light. “It gives you great beach texture,” he says. It smells great and works great for both naturally wavy and curly hair as well as those with straight locks. There’s no residue, no grease, and it will give you the casual hold of a great islander look without damaging your hair.

44 HAMPTONSMONTHLY.COM

Leave-In Conditioner

Styling Paste And of course, you’ll need a product to tame that mane. Kevin.Murphy’s Night Rider Matte Texture Paste has a delicious citrusy, tangerine scent. Once you’ve worked it in, you’ll feel like the best version of your natural self without any of that heaviness that most hair pastes leave behind. “Night Rider has a firm hold and will keep your hair in place all day,” Omar says.

Guys who dismiss the usefulness of a leave-in conditioner are missing out big time. There’s potential for achieving a killer ‘do if you work a dollop of it in after a shower. Kevin.Murphy’s Staying Alive is a great option. First, it comes as a spray rather than a cream, so you’ll have more control over how much you get. It’ll absorb instantly into your hair and bring some silky softness without any greasy leftovers.

Molding Cream American Crew Fiber is simply one of the best hair products for men on the market today. It has a wonderfully unobtrusive yet intoxicating scent and, as Felix says, “it will firmly hold your hair, while leaving it with a flexible and natural feel.” American Crew Fiber is available at drug stores everywhere.

s we continue to relish everything the hamlets and villages have to offer, including a myriad of impressive live events, make the summer nights something to look forward to as much as a day on the beach. Here we take a look at some of the most exciting offerings in the coming weeks from world-class musicians and bands to award-winning comedic acts.

SATURDAY, JUNE 24 Known for their 80’s pop synth-inspired sound, the Brooklyn-based group St. Lucia comes to The Surf Lodge Saturday, June 24 for a one-night-only concert event. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, singer/songwriter and frontman Jean-Philip Grobler found his voice as an artist after attending music school in Liverpool, where he met his collaborator and eventual wife, Patti Beranek. Grobler’s soaring vocals and unique aesthetic can be traced back to his experiences growing up and performing in the Drakensberg Boys School Choir, which toured the world extensively, further shaping St. Lucia’s unique aesthetic. Grobler also cites Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, Radiohead, and Lionel Richie as artistic influences. The group has released two studio albums including When the Night (2013) and Matter (2016) and are known for their hit singles “Dancing on Glass” and “Elevate,” among many others. With their light, airy, and celebratory sound, St. Lucia will have their audience dancing late into the night. (The Surf Lodge, 183 Edgemere Street, Montauk)

FRIDAY, JUNE 30 The American blues group Hot Tuna has been entertaining audiences with raucous live performances for over four decades and will bring their electric live act to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Friday June 30th. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady met as kids growing in in Washington, D.C. and started playing music together in their teens. They drew inspiration from everything the music scene in the nation’s capital had to offer including local blues, country, and jazz acts--all of which influenced their sound. Over the next four decades the group would go on to to collaborate with other artists and work on solo projects, their friendship and love of rock and roll always bringing them back together. Hot Tuna has a devoted fan base and extensive catalog of album releases and has played with artists from Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, as well as music festivals such as Bonnaroo and Merlefest. Zach Erdem & Richie Hosein THE HEAD HONCHOS OF THE HAMPTONS' PARTY SCENE

Y

ou've never met Zach Erdem and Richie Hosein? Well, these guys have: Jimmy Fallon, Hugh Jackman, Carmelo Anthony, Sofia Vergara, even Joe Biden. Their restaurants and clubs are regularly on the rosters of some of the East End's most notable residents and vacationers and we're here to tell you that, if it's not already, it should be on yours too. Cuisine aside, as delicious as it is, it's the experience that's created at their restaurants 75 Main and Kozu, and nightclub AM Southampton that's paramount. It's exactly what you think when you hear Hamptons – upscale fun that can only be found at this very particular stretch of the Eastern tip of Long Island. While we could have opted to ask about the nuances of the different venues, we chose to get to know Zach and Richie. The men who make it happen. After all, if it's good enough for the former Vice President, we trust it'll do you right. So, here they tell us about a couple of the coolest guys they got to hang with, what's on the menu if you're dining with them at Kozu, their favorite songs of the summer, and which show they'd love to have come in to film. AM Southampton 52 HAMPTONSMONTHLY.COM

Who was your coolest celeb run-in with at one of your spots? Give us the details! Zach Erdem: Coolest celeb: Leonardo Dicaprio came to 75 Main with 18 people on a busy Saturday night. I sat with him, had dinner, then next day New York Post wrote that Leo was at 1 OAK last night but I Tweeted a picture with him that he was at 75 Main and Daily News wrote that New York Post was lying. Richie Hosein: Michael Jordan, the greatest of all time, came to AM with his wife for our Roc The Hamptons Party. He ordered a bottle of 1942 for his wife and hung out with Carmelo Anthony, Zach and I at the owners table the entire night. You’re bringing a group of friends to Kozu for dinner and they’re leaving the ordering up to you… What’s it gonna be?

"The greatest summer nightlife experience with the most beautiful decor, beautiful people, and celebrities celebrating life together in the Hamptons." RICHIE HOSEIN

Kozu 54 HAMPTONSMONTHLY.COM

ZE: I would order crispy rice, tuna guac, lobster roll, grass feed filet, Kozu roll, duck buns, otoro with black caviar and 22 carat gold on top. Name your three favorite songs of the summer so far. RH: Drake - " Passionfruit", Ayo and Teo - "Rolex", Justin Bieber "Despacito". Sum up the atmosphere at AM on a Saturday night in July in one sentence. ZE: It’s one of those things you just can’t explain. The patio is packed, inside is packed, the music is great – it’s hard to put it into words, you just have to experience it.

RH: The greatest summer nightlife experience with the most beautiful decor, beautiful people, and celebrities celebrating life together in the Hamptons. What’s the biggest difference between nightlife out East vs. the city? ZE: City clubs are open most nights, it's not special anymore, like you are going to restaurant. In The Hamptons you have two nights to choose, Friday or Saturday. People [have] to wait till the weekend to get ready to go out and get excited. RH: The Hamptons is a destination and vacation hotspot and when you visit us you can let go of all your responsibilities. If you could have one TV show come to the Hamptons to film an episode and shoot one scene at either 75 Main, Kozu, or AM, which place would you pick and what show would it be? RH: The Tonight Show staring Jimmy Fallon, spending a day in the Hamptons with his and our celebrity guests. It would start with Neverland brunch at Kozu, followed by dinner at 75 Main, and end partying in the DJ Booth at AM nightclub. Describe to us your perfect Sunday in Southampton. ZE: It starts with running at the beach, then heading back to 75 Main, getting ready for a crazy brunch, greeting my guests – then headed to the farm in the afternoon, then ending with a great dinner at Kozu.

RED, WHITE, & BLUE

imbibing Get into the Spirit of the Fourth by Color-Coding Your Drinking

I

f you’re feeling preemptively patriotic, or simply wish the Fourth of July were celebrated for more than one day, here’s an idea: raise a glass to the red, white, and blue—literally. These cocktails are not just colored appropriately for the holiday, but also enticing enough that you’ll want to drink them all summer long.

O

n Montauk Highway in East Hampton sits a Gatsby-esque old filling station that was run by the Gardiner family in the 1920s. In more recent years, its skeleton has been converted into various restaurants (to varying degrees of success), the most recent of which is decidedly true-to-form: Service Station, which opened last year as a chic bar and grill that pumps out a menu of all-American fare. From the black-and-white décor and sweet bulb-strung outdoor patio to the locally sourced ingredients, Service Station has already carved out a place for itself on the summer restaurant scene. Mr. Gardiner himself would likely feel right at home with the cocktail menu, which is composed largely of classic concoctions like an aperol spritz or basic dirty martini. The exception to this is the Bloody Hell, a take on the Bloody Mary deliberately made so spicy that bacon, a blue cheese–stuffed olive, and a cornichon are served as garnishes to help counter the heat. Start the Day on a Sweet Note

I

n reality, Swallow East is far more trendy than its on-paper description makes it out to be: a rustic eatery that draws from the looks of the neighboring fishing shacks by the water’s edge in Montauk. But simplicity seems to be this restaurant’s particular stamp of sophistication. The focus here is on the cocktails, which are hailed as some of the best in town. Alongside alcoholic versions of freshly brewed iced tea and squeezed lemonade, the Tallulah is as fresh and summery as a drink can be, mixing lime and agave with Partida Blanco tequila, tinted red from the strawberries and jalapenos that have been infusing the liquor with their hints of sweet and spice. (474 West Lake Dr., Montauk)

O

n any given day, those looking for a cool event to check out need look no further than Montauk Beach House, which packs its summer calendar with charity fundraisers, designer sales and showcases, pop-up galleries, and parties both day and night by the waters of its capacious outdoor pool. It’s a laid-back party spot where guests and non-guests alike gather to live out their most idealized daydreams of summer, lounging on cabana beds or dancing barefoot under the stars.

o beach town is complete without a Mexican dive bar, which in East Hampton is accomplished by Blue Parrot. Surf boards and old guitars create an atmosphere in which anything beyond cut-offs and tank tops may feel uncomfortably fancy, particularly during weekday happy hours (4–6 p.m.), when guests come straight from the beach to secure a metal bar stool and cool down with half-price margaritas and specialty cocktails.

If you’re not yet ready to hit the tequila, opt for the Blue Crush, which mixes Stoli Blueberry with a scoop of fresh blueberries, lemonade, and sparkling water, making for a blue potion that it’s a laid-back feels good on the stomach and party spot packs in a dose of antioxidants too. A TASTE

of the States Hamptons Dining at its all-American finest

LT Burger Photo by Robert Zuckerman

H

ow do you define American food? It’s hard to pin down what this country’s cuisine exactly is, given the fact that Asian chicken salads and nachos appear on the menus of many self-proclaimed American restaurants. But when faced with an ice cream sundae or a red plastic basket of fries, no one can deny that, yes, some types of restaurants are undeniably a part of the American experience. In the Hamptons, here are six.

O

f the some dozen restaurants in celebrity chef Laurent Tourandel’s portfolio, LT Burger is his modern homage to the old-school American burger bar. No smoke and mirrors in this joint—subway-tiled walls, a big centerpiece bar with flat-screen TVs, a kid’s menu, and a

fireplace for chillier seasons make it bright and charming. The dining options reads so much like a drive-in restaurant menu that you half expect the waitresses to come around on roller skates. There are chili-topped nachos, fried pickles, and burger combos with fries and a choice of drink, though given the chef, it nevertheless all still feels a bit luxe with touches like Nieman Ranch bacon, smoked gouda, and Kobe beef hot dogs. A lavish milkshake menu offers 10 options that can be turned “R-rated” by adding a shot of booze for a perfect end to a day, while an adjoining coffee shop with espresso drinks and big stacks of pancakes and cheesy egg dishes is the perfect place to start one. (62 Main St., Sag Harbor)

I

f you’re driving down the highway between Amagansett and Montauk and pass a red shack with a big sign reading “Clam Bar,” it’s time to pull over and have some of the freshest seafood you’re bound to eat in this part of the States. Pearl Oysters and clams served icy cold and lobster served whole or diced up on a delicious lobster roll are plucked from local waters and delivered to the kitchen just before noon, when the shack opens. It’s the type of place where even the wait for your food is a pleasant experience, what with the umbrella-shaded tables, rock n’ roll tunes, and cold cans of Montauk Brewing Company beer. When the fishing season is right, dishes such as grilled mahimahi and crab salad are winners, though the classic fried clam strips or a fish ‘wich with fries can never do you wrong. (2025 Montauk Highway, Amagansett)

pull over and have some of the freshest seafood you’re bound to eat in this part of the States

I

f the fact that it’s cash-only and website-less is any indication, John’s Drive-In is a throwback to the salad days of yesteryear—the type of place where Marsha Brady might skip into for a night bite after a school dance. Juicy bacon-topped burgers, fish sandwiches, buckets of fried clams, and cheese fries are cheap, filling, and served hot from the griddle tops to candy-colored booths. A self-serve soda machine was a big step in a modern direction for the retro joint last year, but the real draw here is the cold dairy treats. John’s scoops up big waffle cones stuffed with strawberry-Oreo ice cream, luscious brownie sundaes, thick malts, and chocolate-dipped soft serve, all of which are made on site. A true mom-and-pop establishment, it’s the type of place that believes that all of life’s problems can be washed away with a sip of a good milkshake or a basket of salty fries. Can’t they? Smokin' Wolf BBQ

S

cattered around various Long Island beaches, the local Beach Hut chain of oceanfront snack bars are exactly what you want to replenish your fuel after riding the waves or napping in the sun. Cupsogue Beach Hut, on its namesake beach in Westhampton, is one of the most popular locations— picture-perfect with sand pails hanging from the ceiling, menus scrawled on chalkboards, and the friendliest wait staff around. The food, however, far surpasses the no-shirt, no-shoes, no-problem vibe. In addition to greasy necessities like mozzarella sticks and fried clams, there’s steamed lobster, clams on the half shell, and fresh salads and wraps. Further brightening even the sunniest of days, a fully stocked bar pours out appropriately strong and sugary mudslides, piña coladas, and rum punch, and often live music begins in the afternoons. (Cupsogue County Park, Westhampton)

M

emphis, Nashville, and Kansas City may have a rolling competition on which city is the ultimate king of barbecue, but in terms of Long Island, Smokin' Wolf BBQ just may take the crown. The freshest meats are slow-smoked, sauce is homemade and available in a gluten-free option, and the corn bread and collard greens have a following in their own rights. Platters and sandwiches of ribs, pork, chicken, turkey, and—as a pleasant surprise— duck share a menu with burgers, fish tacos, wraps (the Thai chicken is a standout), and a salad menu far more impressive than one expects for such an animal-focused establishment. The restaurant’s most popular items are quesadillas stuffed with the shredded barbecued meats, perhaps because they’re easy to grab on-thego. Otherwise, for larger orders, consider calling ahead. This is barbecue done right, which means everything is cooked to order. (199 Pantigo Rd., East Hampton)

Dan’s Taste

of Summer back and better than ever A

lthough some would argue that summer in the Hamptons begins on Memorial Day weekend, when New Yorkers flock to the sandy beaches and limpid waters that they’ve been craving while locked in skyscrapers throughout the year, many others consider the start of the season to coincide with Dan’s Taste of Summer series of events. This year, the celebrations kicked off with the debut of an entirely new event: Dan’s Rosé Soirée. Presented by Porsche at the Southampton Arts Center, the event showcased over 30 rosés from the Hamptons, North Fork, France, Spain and beyond alongside local brews by the Montauk Brewing Company, specialty cocktails and, of course, chef tastings. Given rosé’s status as the unofficial drink of the season, we can think of no better way to welcome Hamptonites back. Gearing up for the rest of the season, the series of events continues starting July with a new Latin-inspired happening, Dan’s Corona Montaco, followed by a slew of equally exciting events across the area.

ST.FRANK Mission-Driven Luxury Brand Pops Up in the East End

T

his summer marks the arrival of a newcomer to the Hamptons, though St. Frank is already known and loved by many locals. Founded in San Francisco in 2013 as an online business, the mission-driven luxury home décor company has opened its first East Coast location, a pop-up store in East Hampton. St. Frank sources its handmade textiles and home goods from all over the world, partnering with entrepreneurial organizations to achieve its mission of supporting economic empowerment for artisans and preserving traditional artisanal craft. Says founder and CEO Christina Bryant, “We’re excited to be on the East Coast, meeting and serving our New York and Hamptons customers and the design community.” The community has good reason to be excited in return.

In the works are more collaborations and partnerships with artists and tastemakers who are aligned with the brand’s mission.

Shoppers who are familiar with St. Frank’s online inventory can expect to find special in-store-only merchandise including floor pillows and (later this summer) custom surfboards featuring the brand’s iconic prints, the latter resulting from an upcoming brand collaboration with Gary Linden. Like its other locations, the Hamptons shop houses unique vintage furniture finds and other one-of-a-kind pieces, such as the Ewe Kente framed textile in the living room space.

Bryant, whose background is in both international development and the arts, named St. Frank after both the company’s hometown and St. Francis of Assisi (the son of a wealthy textile merchant, who devoted his life to the poor). Californians have been able to shop at Its permanent San Francisco location since 2015, as well as pop-up spaces in Los Angeles and Palo Alto. Now East Enders can personally peruse vintage furniture, art, rugs, wallpaper, linens, and much more in a space on Main Street that has been transformed into an eclectically decorated living area, a collaboration with interior design firm SWAYSTUDIO. According to Bryant, “We selected a space in the heart of East Hampton that has beautiful windows and light on three facades…We kept some of the natural charm of the space, such as the decorative tin ceilings and wainscoting.” The store houses distinct living, dining, library, and bedroom spaces, showcasing St. Frank’s Tree of Life and Kuba Cloth wallpaper, original fabric in window treatments, and many other brand specialties. A summery green theme throughout the space adds to what Bryant describes as “a fresh Hamptons cottage vibe.”

In addition to the enjoyment of browsing such a unique and inspiring store, Hamptons locals and visitors can look forward to a variety of special events throughout the summer, including book signings and trunk shows. Taking place the weekend of July 4 will be a kickoff of St. Frank’s in-storeonly collaboration with Rachelle Hruska of Lingua Franca; on July 15, customers can watch custom painting of the store’s travel accessories by designer Ashley Begley. In the works are more collaborations and partnerships with artists and tastemakers who are aligned with the brand’s mission. According to Bryant, New Yorkers were “early adopters of our work...We hope we get the chance to meet many St. Frank collectors while we are in town through Labor Day.” And the relationship doesn’t have to end once the summer’s over, as St. Frank plans to open a pop-up in Manhattan for the fall and holiday seasons. ESSENTIAL TIPS TO KEEP YOUR BODY BE ACH-RE ADY

Staying fit and healthy during the summer can be a challenge as your calendar fills up with cocktail parties, barbeques, and days at the beach. These can all take a toll on the body if you’re not adequately prepared. To help the transition from city to surf, experts at NYU Langone have offered up some important tips to help you make the most of the summer season.

1. PRE-VACATION HYDRATION Staying hydrated starts before you walk out the door: increase the amount of fluids you consume approximately 24 hours prior to your time off.

2. DRINK COLD FLUIDS Not only are cold drinks refreshing, but research shows that cool liquids (around 40 °F) are also absorbed faster by your body. 3. GO ONE-FOR-ONE WITH YOUR DRINKS The dehydrating effects of alcohol are actually greater when you’re enjoying cocktails in the sun. Replenish by drinking 8 ounces or more of water between each drink. But avoid rehydrating with sugary drinks – these can actually increase dehydration. 4. HEAT AND YOUR HEART RATE Your heart rate can increase up to an additional 10 beats per minute when you’re outside in temperatures between 75 – 90 °F. With the body working hard just being in the heat, it once again

The price tag to buy the Cinema is $8 million, and we comes back to proper hydration: “Drinking fluids will help your body adjust to the heat, and, most importantly, it will help regulate your heart rate,” recommends Heather Milton, MS, RCEP, CSCS, senior exercise physiologist at NYU Langone. 5. INCREASE YOUR WORKOUT FREQUENCY During the hot summer months, concentrate more on frequency of workouts rather than intensity or duration. The heat can lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes from sweat. Getting smaller, more frequent exercise bouts in will maintain fitness and keep your body healthy. “Smaller workouts can add up to big results,” says Milton. 6. EMBRACE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES “Make it easy to stay fit by finding enjoyable ways to move,” she adds. Explore your surroundings and enjoy the outdoors by finding nearby hiking or walking trails, renting bicycles, going

swimming or snorkeling, or consider an organized cycling or walking tour. 7. BRING THE GYM OUTSIDE It’s easy to switch up your routine: Swap the elliptical and weights for a jump rope and resistance bands, and head outside. If you’re a runner, take a short, barefoot jog on sand to strengthen your calf muscles. End your workout with some relaxing beach yoga. 8. BE SMART ABOUT THE SUN “Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 before you get going for the day,” recommends Jennifer Stein, MD, PhD, associate professor of dermatology at NYU Langone. Remember to re-apply sunscreen at least every two hours, especially after you get out of the water. When possible, avoid midday sun by seeking shade and wearing protective clothing. Not only does sunburn increase risk for skin cancer, it can quickly put a damper on your vacation.

And mark your calendar for the PARTY FOR THE CINEMA, SUNDAY, JULY 16, 5–8PM ON LONG WHARF!
