The monthly meetings of this social organization included plays, songs, readings and music. The building was restored in 1979 as the local community hall. Newtonville Cenotaph 4498 Durham Regional Highway 2 Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0 The granite obelisk was constructed in 1902 and dedicated to the memory of Captain P. K. Milligan. In April 1943, a collision damaged the monument. The original stone base was replaced with cement and was re-erected in Memorial Garden. Part of the Doors Open Ontario initiative, volunteers and members of the Clarington community invite you to “Unlock Your History” by opening the doors to homes and properties that showcase our history and heritage. This free annual event is held the second Saturday in June.

Join us for a diverse experience featuring Newtonville and Port Granby. Hidden amongst the far southeastern region of Clarington, both communities have survived historic struggles and adapted as time and circumstance have dictated resulting in communities that are strong on tradition while also moving forward with the times. What should I know when visiting a DOC property? Each property owner or organization has kindly opened their doors to the public. Please ensure that you respect these sites by only accessing designated viewing areas and not accessing off limit areas. Children are welcome on all of the DOC sites, please note that they should be supervised at all times. Pets are not permitted on our sites.

Port Granby Legacy Waste Management Facility Intersection of Lakeshore Road and Nichols Road. Port Granby, Ontario The Port Granby legacy site is a remnant of Canada’s nuclear past. Through the Port Granby Project, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is safely transporting 450,000 cubic metres of historic low-level radioactive waste away from the Lake Ontario shoreline site for long-term storage in a new engineered facility. The waste was deposited at the legacy site between 1955 and 1988 by the former Crown corporation, Eldorado Nuclear Limited. Closed at 2:30pm

Skelding’s Texaco Gas Station 26 Church Lane Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0

The Columnbarium unusually placed at the top of a hill with stones dating back to the mid-1800s, locally managed and maintained, is beautifully unique and worth a stop if for nothing more that the splendid lake view. The west property extension purchased in 1952 allowed for new generations along with their ancestors to choose this final resting place.

Established 1956; open for 44 years. With time the town slowly lost its bustle, and even though the station closed, artifacts of the past remain. The pumps stand as monuments to earlier times. The Skelding family in this and the Leskard area known well since early 1800s. The station still houses a local business; property is home of original owners.

Hilltop Farm 4652 LAKESHORE RD Port Granby, Ontario Hilltop Farm has been in the Elliott family since the earliest days of the English settlers (c. 1834) in Port Granby. House and barn were built prior to1860, which was the heyday of the port. The local sawmill cut nearby softwoods to build the framing, floors and clapboard exterior. A hand-dug well below the kitchen penetrated the hard clay soil.

The Old March Hotel 4659 LAKESHORE RD Port Granby, Ontario Located on the historical site of the Port Granby Wharf, was built around 1857 by David March. The hotel originally housed a bar room, two sitting rooms, four bedrooms, and on the grounds were a six-horse stable and a large driving shed. George Elliot purchased the property and converted it to a private residence as it remains today.

The first area school house c. 1840s closed approximately 1850s according to the township minutes; moved being an obstruction and nuisance where it stood. At that time moved to this property and later used as a harness and shoe repair shop by the late George Hancock, a local business man, who moved it to the back of the lot 1883.

Grist Mill Auctions 9 Mill Street Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0 Originally early 1900s blacksmith shop of George Hancock. Building suffered two fires (1943, 1948), rebuilt and flourishing since 1980 as part of the Stapleton Auction house. The 1948 re-construction used munitions buildings built in Ajax, ON during World War II. Today it features a rare vintage 1930's Ruston & Hornsby diesel engine. Also was a Feed Mill before 1970s.

The March Cottage 4665 LAKESHORE RD Port Granby, Ontario The original cottage is assumed to date back to 1850 when records show that a mortgage of £50 was taken out by Mr. March. The book “Heritage Homes of Clark Township” describes the original moulding on the front door. A full basement and kitchen extension was added in the 1970s and a great room was added in the 1980s.

Stapleton Home 4526 Regional Highway No. 2 Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0 George Hancock (1845-1919) once owned this home c. 1869 where he ran a harness business. The brick on the original building was supposedly reused from a fire in Newcastle. More recently enjoyed by several generations of the Stapleton family, the current owners moved in expanding the footprint and completely renovated the interior to create this unique and beautiful home.

The B/A Station / Stapleton Auction House 4532 Regional Highway No. 2 Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0 This vintage British American service station dating back to the 1950's; so recognizable by the B/A sign out front. This building replaced the earlier Burley (the well-known bus company) garage from the 1920's. It is one of the finest examples of the Art Deco styled B/A garage still existing in Ontario. Doctor's House 4516 Regional Highway No. 2 Newtonville, Ontario L0A 1J0 House was built in 1886. There is original wood trim finishes with faux mahogany, original grates, doors. The barn is post and beam and with pole roof support.
