PRIMARY PURPOSE: To serve as health advocate, health information resource and health educator for students, and to provide health services necessary to assist students in attaining educational goals. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Certification: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice nursing in the State of Texas; Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and three years’ experience in some area of nursing; CPR within the past two years; Vision, Hearing, Acanthosis Nigricans and Spinal Screening certification within the past five years. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 1. Maintains student advocacy role to assist in the protection and well being of students. 2. Provides emergency care to ill and injured students/employees. 3. Assesses the health status of students, develops nursing care plans with specific nursing interventions, and provides case management of students with acute or chronic health problems. 4. Administers state law regarding screening, immunizations and communicable diseases. 5. Administers immunizations to students as assigned. 6. Trains, develops and monitors skills of assigned unlicensed personnel. 7. Records and maintains health information in a confidential and timely manner. 8. Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program. Coordinating health and prevention activities with the instructional program. SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Participates in planning health services needed for students whose physical, mental, or behavioral conditions interfere with learning. 2. Collaborates with community agencies/professionals, school staff and parents to meet the health needs of students. 3. Serves as wellness resource to assist students, families and staff. 4. Assists administrators in planning and implementing a safe school environment. 5. Provides health education and guidance in professional, community and school activities.
