On the 20th anniversary of the 1993 World Development Report, a Lancet Commission revisited the case for investment in health and created a comprehensive set of recommendations to achieve dramatic health gains by 2035. The need to address health in its global and complex nature is illustrated by the tragic example of the current Ebola crisis in Western Africa. The lack of adequate tools in prevention, treatment and diagnostic, weak health systems (lack of infrastructure, health workers, training), and the absence of effective early warning and health response mechanisms, but also mistrust in health systems by the communities contributed to the extent of the outbreak. Hence, smart investments must be made and action must be taken to break the vicious cycle of poverty undermining health, while poor health compounds poverty. http://www.thelancet.com/commissions/globalhealth-2035
