The Personal Best FAST 50 Scotland Scottish companies are delivering strong sales growth, proving that driven business leaders can deliver new sales regardless of the prevailing economic climate writes Personal Best founder Barry Duddy.

A

fter a sustained period of gloomy economic data the FAST 50 Scotland list shows that there are reasons to be cheerful. Scottish entrepreneurs are bucking the trend, delivering strong sales growth in a diverse range of industries. In recessionary times few companies make plans to expand rapidly but this is exactly what the companies on the Personal Best FAST 50 have done, in many cases more than doubling sales from the previous year. The companies featured are from diverse backgrounds including technology businesses such as Kelvin Nanotechnology which continues to grow by providing a wide range of R&D services to the semiconductor market and retailers such as The Glasgow Angling Centre, founded by entrepreneur Paul Devlin, the business is now the biggest specialist angling shop in Europe, with over £8m in sales. Looking through the list one cannot help but notice that specialist companies, those that target a specific niche within their industry make up the majority of the league table. Regardless of sector the companies that have differentiated themselves through key offerings dominate this year's league. It is perhaps something all businesses will need to focus on in ever competitive markets, those that offer a tailored solution which meets the needs of a specific market are more likely to prosper. Collectively Scotland's FAST 50 delivered almost £500m of revenue and the majority have further plans to expand, bringing more jobs and revenue in to the Scottish economy in the coming years. Personal Best is a performance based m a n a ge m e nt co n s u l ta n c y a n d p e rs o n a l development company that has created the FAST 50 SCOTLAND league, which ranks Scotland's fastest growing private companies based on annualised sales growth. The Personal Best FAST 50 Scotland is compiled and published every March, with an awards conference and networking event in May.
