CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Short Course on Planetary Health: Health in a Complex World 13 – 17 August 2018, SEARCA, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines About the Course: As an emerging field of global health, planetary health seeks to understand the interlinkages between environmental health, human health and the societal aspects on which these two depend on. Planetary health takes a transdisciplinary approach to the understanding of the indivisible bidirectional relationship between the environment and wellbeing. In this 5-day short course, program participants are immersed in activities that facilitate the internalization of concepts such as environmental health, global health, and sustainable development, surrounded by the complexity of correlations between each other. This process of conceptual integration is mediated through problem-based learning and critical discussion exercises. Broad environmental scenarios and challenges such as atmospheric pollution, water sanitation and hygiene, climate change, agro-industrial development, biodiversity loss, among others, and their respective extension to health and development will be the framework to generate efforts that identify strategies to address these issues. About the Lecturer: Dr. Carlos Faerron has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Costa Rica, and a European Master of Science in International Health and Development from the Queen Margaret University of Edinburgh and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam under an Erasmus Mundus TropEd Consortium. He also has a Diploma in Social Innovation for Health from INCAE Business School. He is a Fellow of the Central American Healthcare Initiative and sits in the Curricular Committee for the Global Master’s in Health and Sustainable Development at EARTH University and the American University of Beirut, as well as a collaborator, consultant, and adjunct professor of multiple national and international academic institutions. Dr. Faerron began his career as a primary care doctor in a rural area of Costa Rica where he worked closely with migrant and indigenous populations. After obtaining his graduate degree, he returned to the same community and co-founded the Inter-American Center for Global Health (CISG), the first global health hub in Central America. He seeks to redefine the meaning of leadership and global health through innovative educational approaches. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the program, participants should be able to: ▪ Assess the interrelations between human health, anthropogenic variations of the environment, and the social-ecological determinants of health. ▪ Analyze the current existing correlations between distinct development policies and programs, consumption patterns, and population health. ▪ Appraise the political, social, and economic dynamics that drive the production and dissemination of planetary health-related knowledge. ▪ Identify suitable communication methods to convey the challenges and solutions of planetary health to diverse audiences.
