U
sing a gravel (in this case Pea Gravel) towards the edge of a garden in unison with a wooden bench and small table offers a retreat which looks amazing. Surround the area with shrubs and flowers to create a beautiful environment. This design can be created in any sized garden, and provides an area to sit with guests or relax alone. The bricks act as a seperator between the turf and the gravel to create a defining line which adds an extra feature to the small area. Different gravels (including our Polar White Marble, Cotswold Buff Gravel or Classic Flint Gravel) will also offer stunning effects when laid out in this way. Replace the table with a focal piece, such as one of our monoliths or a Chimenea to create a talking point when sat with guests or friends.
A
pproaching your garden with a more modern and turf free apporach equally allows gravel to shine and create a beautiful patio area. Using a combination of our many gravels, you can create a beautiful multicoloured effect which is seperated by large slate panels and can be used as walking points or to house large plant pots which adds that bit of nature to an otherwise full manmade patio. This design is great for places which catch a lot of sun as the tiles will become warm and comfortable on a sunny day. Places such as a mediteranean retreat or Holiday home on the coast would suit this design well. Pair with a fire pit or bbq and add a few wooden seats to create an amazing BBQ area, or why not add a hot tub to create the ultimate area for friends and family to relax!

garden inspiration - Water Features
W
ater features really add something special to a garden, whether it is just the subtle sound of trickling water or the lovely reflection of the surrounding plants. Every garden can have a water feaure, and slate and cobbles are the perfect aggregate to get yours started. Pictured left is a very simple water feature made using Scottish pebbles. Any pebbles or cobbles will do find and all it takes is a bit of time and effort to create a stunning water feature as pictured.
Slate works particularly well when creating water features. One favourite of ours is the Snowdonia Polished Slate. This mixture of blue and plum green colours work perfectly when laid underneath water, the glossy finish created by the water adds a beautiful effect which will create a talking point amongst friends and guests. Some of the finest show and exhibition gardens will incorporate water, either for reflection or movement, and it is well worth the effort in the planning stages of the garden.
W
ater features can be amazing as a natural garden piece, or to create a modern effect as pictured right. The water is seperated by a glass boundary which allows your guests to see the pea pebble foundation in all its glory. Water based plants which grow tall and thin are perfect to add a natural finish to an otherwise seamless transition between water and pebble.
This effect also has a few advantages. The water, once added to this area, will not be required to pass through a pump and areas with significant rainfall can benefit from having this area as a rain collection area which would otherwise cause flooding. The water also offers a lovely place for wildlife to reside and the area pictured right would act as a large bird bath as long as it is not too deep. It is always important to remember where pumps and electricity must go before commiting to a project.

garden inspiration - Rockeries
R
ockeries provide a stunning and natural randomness to any garden which allows plants to grow in any way and still look really good. This is perfect for anyone who doesn’t have enough time to maintain a pristine garden. Using a mixture of Snowdonia tumbled slate or any other slate along with large pieces of slate or rocks creates a beautiful finish,
That’s not just to say rockeries provide complete randomness. They can be created to be maintained perfectly and look just as good either way. Rockeries are usually created to emulate stone escarpments which exist near mountains and consist of larger protruding rocks from a full natural assortment of flowers and shrubs. Using different variations of slate will yield different results, so ensure you pick your slate to plant ratio carefully in order to get the best effect from your garden.
A
s described above, rockeries can also be well maintained man made creations just like the rockery pictured right. This circle of pebbles with a monolith centrepiece creates a focal point of any garden. This easy to create structure can lie in the middle of any garden and can be surrounded either by turf, or gravel (as pictured).
We would recommend grabbing two constrasting aggregates for the best effect, making a slate monolith go perfectly well with polar white cobbles to create a beautiful central piece. Mixing and matching different aggregates can sometimes be difficult to visualise, however a safe bet is to always go with two aggregates that contrast one another if going for a centre piece, or that are similar if wanting to blend each of them into the background of any garden.
