Senior Lawyer, Referral Service An exciting opportunity has arisen to join one of Australia’s most successful public interest and pro bono law organisations. Justice Connect is a not-for-profit organisation with a vision of a world that is fair and just; where rights are respected and advanced, laws are fairer, and systems are more accessible and accountable. Justice Connect provides access to justice through pro bono legal services to people experiencing disadvantage and the community organisations that support them. We also address injustice through law reform, policy work and legal education. Justice Connect provides a professional, efficient and effective system for the provision of pro bono legal services, both for clients and for pro bono lawyers. Justice Connect acts as a go-between for pro bono legal assistance between the community and the private legal profession. We are currently seeking a Senior Lawyer to play a vital role in delivering pro bono services to people experiencing disadvantage through facilitating referrals to Justice Connect member firms and barristers. If you are admitted as a legal practitioner in Victoria, eligible to hold an unrestricted practising certificate, hold knowledge of the legal issues facing marginalised and disadvantaged clients, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a desire to make a difference for human rights and social justice through law reform and advocacy, we look forward to hearing from you. Role purpose The Senior Lawyer will play a vital role in developing and delivering the Referral Service strategy. With a focus on law reform and advocacy as well as working with students. The role supports the delivery of access to justice through pro bono legal services for people experiencing disadvantage and includes building, supporting and engaging a strong commitment to pro bono work among lawyers.

Key responsibilities 

Assist the Manager with policy & advocacy work, including preparing or coordinating submissions on areas of law and policy that impact on access to justice for individuals experiencing disadvantage.



Assist the Manager to Identify and pursue public interest matters that further the aims and objectives of Justice Connect.



Assist the Director and Manager to develop and deliver the strategic direction of the Referral Service.



Assist the Manager to develop new systems and methods of engagement including the use of new technologies to increase pro bono delivery and engagement.



Participate in the Referral Service as required including: o

Engagement with key stakeholders to establish dedicated referral pathways;

o

Coordinate the involvement of lawyers in strategic responses to unmet legal need, including development and delivery of training programs for pro bono lawyers; and

o

Undertake and support complex casework including pro bono assessments and facilitate referrals to Justice Connect member firms and barristers in Victoria.



Lead the Service’s Practical Legal Training program and supervise and mentor Practical Legal Training students.



Undertake professional development activities to improve legal knowledge and non-legal skills.



Perform other duties as directed and necessary to the proper performance of the role.

Selection criteria Qualifications

Admitted as a legal practitioner in Victoria Be eligible to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate

Experience

Five years plus post admission experience in relevant areas of law Ability to deal with people experiencing disadvantage required

Knowledge & skills

Knowledge of the legal issues facing people experiencing disadvantage High level of communication and negotiation skills with a demonstrated ability to use those skills to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and clients Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to give accurate and practical legal information Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively in a team environment Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders in a professional and respectful manner and in particular the ability to communicate and engage with people experiencing disadvantage Strong attention to detail and ability to stay focussed under pressure and to appropriately prioritise competing demands Sound computer skills within a legal practice environment Drive, focus and good judgment A commitment to the objectives and values of Justice Connect
