As a way of opening the Thank You 3 September Photo Contest Winner 4 Pledger Future Events 4 newsletter, I wanted to thank everyone who helped make the Ninilchik Fair such a great success this year. Due to the efforts of nearly 100 volunteers, the Kenai Peninsula District 4-H program was well represented, seen and heard by one of the largest fair audiences in recent memory. 2-3

The quality of exhibits, cleanliness of the 4-H barns and facilities and many helpful hands prior to, during and directly following the fair are evidence the 4-H program continues to be blessed with a great group of dedicated youth members, parents and leaders. I would like to specifically recognize and thank those from the community at large who continue to support our local programs and who, year after year, faithfully give of their time, resources and expertise. To all the superintendents, judges, Soldotna Rotary members, JML and Shooting Sports business sponsors and the Kenai Peninsula State Fair Board, please know you are a highly valued and necessary part of this positive lifeexperience we call 4-H.

Finally, I would like to thank our Cooperative Extension staff and faculty members: Vicki, Rosy, Linda, Janice and Lydia. Your support, encouragement, historical knowledge and work in the trenches were invaluable assets in managing one of the largest volunteer efforts I have ever had the privilege to lead. For many of our newer members, 4-H families and myself, this year’s fair was well defined by the 4-H motto, “Learn by Doing.” Now that we have all had some time to catch our breath, I look forward to a few months of reflection, regrouping and discussing how together we can make the best 4-H fair in the state even better in the coming project year! If you have ideas for how our fair can be improved, I highly recommend your participation in the Kenai Peninsula 4-H Council and Junior Market Livestock Council business meetings. It is through these meetings that events are planned, needs and changes are discussed and program delivery is strategized. I look forward to what the new project year will bring and to working with the many new club leaders and members that are already eagerly gearing up to get club activities underway.

Sincerely, Jason Floyd, 4-H and Youth Development Agent Kenai Peninsula District

Club News

August 4-H’er of the Month Since there was no Pledger newsletter last month, it is my pleasure to announce Courtney Stroh has been selected as the August 4-H’er of the Month. She is a member of the Ridgeway Ranchers and ROC the Kenai 4-H Clubs. Courtney has continued to set the bar of excellence very high all year long. Courtney is receiving this recognition due to her tireless organizational efforts in mobilizing the ROC the Kenai 4-H Club and other community members during the busy Kenai River personal use salmon dip-netting season in August. Courtney also organized a JML swine workshop at her house, club car-wash and fence painting fundraiser and made numerous public appearances in print, radio and at public and governmental meetings. Courtney was also recognized as one of a handful of other youth identified as ACS Summer of Heroes award recipients. Courtney is a shining example of what a 4-H Ambassador should look like and for these reasons has earned the award for August 4-H’er of the Month.

September 4-H’er of the Month It is also my pleasure to announce Rylie Fields of the Ridgeway Ranchers is being recognized as 4-H’er of the Month in September for her continued dedication and superior handling of her JML swine project. Like so many other JML members Rylie struggled through the year to prepare and bring her swine project to the fair. However upon arrival in Ninilchik, her pig became so distressed that it almost died. As a result of its condition, Rylie’s pig was quarantined until Dr. Nybakken could verify it did not have a contagious or infectious disease, the pig had to receive multiple shots and there was even a question as to whether or not Rylie would be able to keep and show her pig at the fair. Through it all Rylie kept a good attitude and continually attended to her hog’s needs. She ultimately participated in conformation and showmanship and though she was not able to sell her pig at auction she still found a buyer and struck a deal to finish her project out on a positive note. Once Rylie’s pig returned home from the fair, it quickly recovered and remains a testament to what proper handling, care and diligence can accomplish in the face of trials and adversity. Good job Rylie, and congratulations on a job well done!

It’s been another great summer and another great fair for Horses and Livestock Unlimited. Thanks to Linda McConnell for putting on a Poultry Workshop just a week before the fair, it helped out a lot. Last month was busy with the trash pickup contest – we won second place. Way to go guys and gals! Robinson Loop and the Sterling Highway look great! Catrina wants to put out a great big "THANK YOU" to everyone that helped with the BBQ at the fair; she said she couldn't have done it without all the great help. Congratulations to Horses and Livestock Unlimited members Kassidy Foust for winning Grand Champion conformation on her steer, Overall Grand Champion for steer showmanship and being Grand Champion of Round Robin Showmanship; Chantel Warfield for Reserve Grand Champion

conformation on her lamb and Overall Grand Champion for lamb showmanship; Briana Sipes for Grand Champion conformation on her goat, Grand Champion conformation on her ducks and Overall Reserve Grand Champion for goat showmanship; Coltin Yancey for Reserve Grand Champion conformation on his turkey and Senior Grand Champion on turkey showmanship; Jacob McConnell for Overall Reserve Grand Champion in Shooting Sports; Nicholas McConnell for Grand Champion conformation on his chickens and Overall Reserve Grand Champion on chicken showmanship and Sarah McConnell for Reserve Grand Champion in art. Way to go everyone, all your hard work and dedication paid off! Keep up the great work and show everyone what champions you are.

September 2012 What a wonderful summer Trail Blazers! Each one of you made me proud! Thank you for being the most wonderful bunch of kids and parents and for sharing your hearts of gold with our community - and with me! We are wrapping up the 4-H year and getting ready to kick off another. Horse kids, we will have our End of Summer Beach Ride in mid-September. Foods group with school going full-swing, you guys will be back in a regular meeting routine! Those of you interested in shooting - the season kick-off BBQ at the range in Anchor Point is scheduled for September 15. JML’ers enjoy a short break - but remember that there might be some changes in the JML program requiring you to be signed up for the 2013 year by November 2012, so don't miss the deadline! Katie Matthews

Just a reminder if we're going to do a 4-H Christmas tree at the Kenai Visitor Center this year. Start planning club meetings to include crafting tree ornaments. These are needed by the middle of November. Thanks, Beth Braxling

Being a part of 4-H I always enjoyed watching the benefit auction animal being sold. I saw a community that supported others with an idea started by Tatiana and Logan Boyle that we should give back when we are reaping the grain of our hard labor in 4-H. Never did I anticipate that there would come a day that I would be on the receiving end of the benefit animal. As a mother when your child gets ill, your world falls apart, life as you knew it no longer exists, everything changes. This has been even truer for us this year, as we have moved to Ohio to continue helping Vienna heal. We miss our community and friends. Moving is a costly adventure let alone the continued medical bills. Your gift has helped me sleep easier at night as I try to create a home and healing environment for Vienna, Treava and I. In the past year, a lot has happened in my life. Things that I did not anticipate or hope for have occurred and they have been difficult. I have often felt defeated, like my life had been hit with a “pause”, or maybe even a “stop” button. I was no longer able to be the carefree teenager; the one who’s biggest worry was what flavor of ice cream I wanted for dessert. Yet, I have learned so many life lessons in the past year and so many people have made everlasting impacts on me throughout this time. I truly believe that with a positive attitude, along with love and support, one can get through any situation no matter how difficult it is. The 4-H community has been my second family throughout my whole life and I have overwhelming gratitude towards each and every one of you. Your monetary contribution means a lot to my family and me, but your kindness and love mean more. All of you have made me a better, stronger person and touched my heart forever. Without you guys, I would be far from where I am today, as a person and health wise. I love you all and I’ll miss you dearly this year. Thank you so much for you generosity, I’ll never forget it and I look forward to seeing you next summer. Vienna
