President’s Message: ! Hello Delmarva members again. I hope you are having a good summer. Margaret and I are, even though it has been hotter than blue blazes recently. Margaret and I spent some time in Massachusetts and then at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. Mystic Seaport is a nice place to visit if you get the chance. It is like a large museum, with old ships and a lot of history. We also went to the Crisfield, MD rally that Boots and Frances Mason hosted the weekend of August 14-16. What a wonderful rally it was! Crisfield is an old historic waterman town that is having to change its purpose for existing from fishing to tourism. I want to thank Boots and Frances for hosting such a great rally. I would also like to thank Noah and Carolyn Bradshaw for their assistance. They are members of Delmarva unit and also Crisfield area natives. Noah is the city inspector and Carolyn works in the tourist office. Thanks heaps, Norah and Carolyn. At this time I would like to ask all members for their continued prayers for Bobbie Smith. So far our prayers have been answered as she is really doing well after her surgery. I sure hope the surgery hasn"t affected her sense of humor. Don"t forget our September rally over in the Garden State. It will be at Jersey Shore Haven Airstream Park. It will be hosted by Tom and Connie Littel, who are residents of the Park, and cohosted by Margaret and me. This is a beautiful RV park in a beautiful state. There is so much to do and see over there. I"m sure you will have a great time. Also, think about the October installation rally. I know that Chuck is going to have the support of everyone in the unit. Chuck is a real hustler and go-getter so I feel we are in for a treat. Margaret is putting her own note after my message, so please think about what she is writing. Carl!s letter continues on page 2.....

Message from Margaret: As your past president I am responsible for securing a full slate of officers for 2010, to present for elections at the next business meeting. So far I have had no success in finding a 2nd Vice-President. Please give this concern some prayerful consideration. The task is not a hard one. Carl and I have enjoyed these past four years of serving our unit and we certainly had a lot of fun with the membership. Call me if you would like to fill this office. Calling is much easier then me asking all the eligable members again.

Crisfield Rally Notes From Frances We want to thank those of you who attended the Crisfield Rally.! It would not have been as great a rally if you had not been there.! We want to especially thank Noah and Carolyn Bradshaw.! They were a! tremendous help to us while the rally was in the planning stage.! We're glad they came by a couple of times to see what we are all about.! It was interesting that we not only had "first timers" there - it was Tom and Diane Meyers first unit rally - but we had 4 couples who are associate members of Delmarva attending.! A specialty at the rally was the wonderful homemade cinnamon buns that Nelia Sholette made - and Stan can really flip a mean pancake.! Bruce and Bonnie Purcell had a lovely inspirational worship service made more special by Herman Duke with his guitar accompaniment.! I hate to admit it but there was a default in the awarding of prizes for the quiz.! I borrowed the Luckett's copy of the quiz which kept them from being able to check their answers, but they had answered all of the questions correctly and should have been awarded a prize.! I have sent them a little prize, but it would have been nice to have recognized them as winners at the time.! They worked hard getting the answers to all those questions although they were not quite as excited about it as Nate. I am sending you a copy of! the note we received today from the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Crisfield.! Frances "Dear Members of the Delmarva Unit” The Immanuel United Methodist Church food pantry in Crisfield would like to thank you for your generous monetary gift and gifts of food.! It was much needed an appreciated. Your gifts will be put to good use among the needy of our community.! Again, our heartfelt thanks.! God bless you all" (Several bags of canned goods and other nonperishable food items were donated to their food pantry in addition to the offering from the worship service in the amount of $118.00)

!!"##$!%$!&'(!!)*(+!,-.-/&!0112 ,+&)3#(!%$!4*"!5((!6"+&(+ On Thursday August 13, 2009 campers started arriving at the American Legion in Crisfield for the rally being hosted by Boots and Frances. It was the first time there for most of us and our first reaction was “WOW! Look at this!” The Legion sits on several acres right on the Annemessex River. By the end of the day, Clyde had successfully parked 11 of us (Mason, Comstock, Warden, Carter, Sholette, Blunda, Purcell, Cruchley, Duke, Morris, and Laughlin & Moore) along the shoreline. The legion was serving up freshly made burgers so most of us enjoyed our dinner there. Friday morning we met Tim Howard at the Tawes Museum in Crisfield and he led us on a walking tour of downtown. Around 1900 Crisfield was the 2nd largest city in Maryland, owing its prosperity to the abundance of oysters and other seafood. The sale of soft shell crabs is the major product now & we toured the MeTompkin plant to see their process. Tim explained how the entire seafood industry has dwindled and how the town is trying to transition to attract tourism and people looking for a nice retirement location. We toured the museum & then split up for lunch and afternoon activities. By late afternoon 6 more campers had arrived. (Wade,Meyers,Lindeman,Kelly,Luckett & Sansom). Noah & Carolyn Bradshaw and Mike & Debbie Pyles joined us for dinner at the spectacular buffet the Legion provided for us. Noah works for the town of Crisfield and spoke to us about the transition that is underway. Thanks to Bill Landis of the Legion, we even had a fire pit and plenty of wood for our campfire. Day Tripping in Delmarva

Iva Lee and I love to travel, but what can you do between the rallies and longer trips? With the Airstream parked in the yard, and family and other life events will not allow an extended trip. I say… Day trip and there is no better place then right here

Fort Delaware

on the Delmarva. A great place to start is Delaware City and Fort Delaware State Park. Delaware City has the only surviving lock (not in service) on the C & D canal. The last time I was there it was full of ducks, but still it gives you an idea of what it looked like in the 1800’s. The town still retains much of its 1800’s architecture along Clinton St. It’s also the place where you can catch the ferry over to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island. The Island has a lot of history dating back to the war of 1812, and was said to be the strongest bastion on the East Coast during the Civil War. Even today you can see the high moated walls still sheathed in granite. With a short ferry trip over and a self guided tour, Pea Patch Island is a must see. Not far from Delaware City is the village of Odessa, where you can visit several homes built in the eighteenth century. The homes are open March through December on Tuesday and Saturday. The first Saturday in December it’s the Women’s Club of Odessa sponsored “Christmas in Odessa”, where old private residences may also be toured. The William Corbit home built in 1774 is said to be one of the best examples of the Georgian style in Delaware. You can see it right there in Odessa Delaware.

As the seat of Kent County and the capital of Delaware, Dover has several day’s worth of trips. The John Dickinson Plantation built in 1740 and the Air Mobility Command Museum are just south of the Air base and both are free admission. In downtown Dover is the State House built in 1792 as the Delaware Capitol, open from 10:00AM to 4:30PM with guided tour. Close by is the Delaware State Visitor Center and The Biggs Museum, both located at the intersection of Federal Street & Duke of York. While at the Visitor Center the staff can help you to visit the Governor’s official residence, Woodburn. This is a handsome Georgian house built about 1790. Just south on The Green is Christ Episcopal Church built in 1734. Don’t forget the Delaware Farm and State Police Museum’s. These are only a few of the things you can do on a day trip. The Delmarva is full of history with cute and unique towns. So pick a day and Go

Saturday morning dawned hot & humid and Boots and his helpers were up early fixing a great pancake breakfast. At noon we took a cruise on the Steven Thomas to Tangier Island. There we were met and led on a 10 minute walk to the Chesapeake House for lunch. A bountiful feast of crab cakes, clam fritters, ham, hot homemade bread, salads and vegetables was spread before us. What a meal we did have! Afterwards, there was shopping and a tour of the Island before we returned. Needless-to-say, no one wanted dinner that night, so we sat by the fire and enjoyed root beer floats. Sunday morning after a continental breakfast, the worship service was led by Bruce Purcell. Herman Duke accompanied him on his guitar & Nate & Livi helped collect the offering. $118 was donated to the local food pantry as well as a large basket of canned goods. Some stayed for a lunch of pizza burgers provided by Carl & Margaret. Thanks to the Masons for putting together a great rally. Charles did an impromptu survey to see what folks liked best. The responses were unanimous – the location. It is a magnificent spot…out done only by the sunsets!!
