September: Interactive lecturing

tdfdf News

This month our newsletter is about methods and tools for interactive lecturing.

Deadlines for the conference ”Prøveformer, feedback og læring” On 18th November 2013 from 9am to 16pm a conference on assessment methods, feedback and learning will be held at SDU Odense.

A formal lecture is traditionally characterised by a teacher, giving an instructional talk on a subject. The lecture hall is arranged so that students and their attention are turned towards the teacher. Surveys show that the odds are againts the learners. Lectures often promote a high degree of passivity, lack of interaction and students experience a decrease in concentration after 20 minutes. It’s difficult to avoid the lecture format, however; It’s easy and familiar for the teachers and students and often a solution to the practical problem with many students and not enough small classrooms. The students even expect to be taught by traditional formal lectures. Lectures might be the right choice, if you want to: • Introduce a new subject area • Structure and prioritise large and/or complex areas of knowledge • Create motivation for further learning • Present updated knowledge (yet unpublished) • Present personal views It’s important to use lectures for the right purposes and rethink the format to support SDU’s principle of active teaching and learning. Read more about how to improve students’ learning possibilities by introducing active learning methods into the lecture format: • Ideas and examples for interactive lecturing This month we also have two examples from teachers who focus on activating students during lectures: • Methods for assessment and interactive lecturing: Postdoc Trine Thilsing has used multiple choice questions, assignments and a “string test” during lectures. • Alignment of learning objectives, lectures and exam: Postdoc Stine Juhl Petersson has made use of the student response system Shakespeak to activate and motivate students and enhance the learning process.
