Servant Leadership !! “The purpose of life is not to win. The purpose of life is to grow and to share. When you come to look back on all that you have done in life, you will get more satisfaction from the pleasure you have brought into other people’s lives than you will from the times that you outdid and defeated them.” Rabbi Harold Kushner

What is Servant Leadership? !!

#2011wls www.truelifecoaching.com [email protected]

•

The modern servant leadership movement was launched by Robert Greenleaf in his 1970 essay, “The Servant Leader.” He was a former AT&T senior HR leader.

•

“A servant-leader is a servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious change brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is a leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire materials possessions…The leader-first and the servantfirst are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.” Robert Greenleaf

Servant Leadership Versus Traditional Approaches !!

#2011wls www.truelifecoaching.com [email protected]

•

Unlike leadership approaches with a top-down hierarchical style, servant leadership instead emphasizes collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. At the heart, the individual is a servant first making a conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others, not to increase their own power.

•

Power, wealth and fame model.

•

The most common model of leadership is the “command and control" model.

•

These leaders see themselves at the top of a hierarchical, bureaucratic organizational model.

•

The leaders hand down commands through layers of management and expect people to do what they are told because they are getting paid to do it.

•

People do not want to be managed, they want to be led.

•

People want to be valued, respected, and given an opportunity to count and to make a difference.

Servant Leadership – Building Relationships !! “Being a leader changes everything. Before you are a leader, success is all about you. Nothing you do anymore as an individual matters except how you nurture and support your team and help its members increase their self-confidence. Put another way: Your success as a leader will not come from what you do but from the reflected glory of your team.” Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric

Servant Leadership !! “No leader can possibly have all the answers…The actual solutions about how best to meet the challenges of the movement have to be made by the people closest to the action…The leader has to find a way to empower those frontline people, to challenge them, to provide them with the resources they need, and then hold them accountable.” Steve Miller, Group Managing Director Royal Dutch/Shell

•

Do they become: healthier, wiser, freer, and more autonomous?

•

Do they become servants themselves?

•

Do I create a safe place for those who work with me?
