Servant Leadership

Go to the below link where you can find and read the first 22 pages of Jesus on Leadership by C. Gene Wilkes. We encourage you to check it out! Or purchase and read the entire book! Seven Principles to Lead as Jesus led. Please read the below excerpt taken from Jesus on Leadership (1998) Tyndale www.tyndale.com and answer the questions that follow.       

Humble your heart: Servant leaders humble themselves and wait for God to exalt them. Jesus humbled himself and allowed God to exalt him. First be a follower: Servant leaders follow Jesus rather than seek a position. Jesus followed his Father’s will rather than sought a position. Find greatness in service: Servant leaders give up personal rights to find greatness in service to others. Jesus defined greatness as being a servant and first as becoming a slave. Take risks: Servant leaders can risk serving others because they trust that God is in control of their lives. Jesus risked serving others because he trusted that he was God’s Son. Take up the towel: Servant leaders take up Jesus’ towel of servant hood to meet the needs of others. Jesus left his place at the head table to serve the needs of others. Share responsibility: Servant leaders share their responsibility and authority with others to meet a greater need. Jesus shared responsibility and authority with those he called to lead. Build a team: Servant leaders multiply their leadership by empowering others to lead. Jesus built a team to carry out a worldwide vision.” 1. Personalize the 7 principles above found on pages 11 and 12 of the excerpt (see link above). 2. Are you willing to make these your 7 principles to lead? 3. How will regularly evaluating your leadership against these 7 principles keep you from developing a “head table” mentality? 4. To be a servant leader, how essential is a servant’s heart toward those God places within your care? 5. Would you describe yourself as one who has submitted your life to Jesus and is actively seeking to model your leadership style after him? If not, how would you describe your relationship to Jesus at this time? 6. Are you committed to servant leadership?
