Share-a-thon Glossary (September 30, 2011)

All I can do – absolute nonsense; a guilty conscience that speaks to you, usually just after you give an amount that you see as insignificant but really blows us away, because you gave Automatic Giving (or EFT, “Automatically”) – denotes your permission for us to draw your gift from either your credit card gift or direct checking account withdrawal; allows The JOY FM to count on fulfillment of your gift, which we celebrate by donating cans of food to area food banks Best Gift – an undetermined amount of money that requires a step of faith to commit Bosun’s Whistle – lit. a pipe used on naval ships by a boatswain; fig. during Share-a-thon, a sound you hear live on-air every time an online gift comes through Brother Jim – colloquial title for Jim Campbell, president of our network, founder of The JOY FM and air-personality famous for the phrase “Let’s go Lakeland!” Campbell Time (Grace Time) – the way we fudge the end of a challenge to squeeze out just a little more time, which usually makes the difference between hitting a goal and missing it Carmen’s Krewe – ordinary people who, like Carmen, discovered they can support The JOY FM at $1000 annually by giving $84.00 a month; makes you feel extra-ordinary! Catalyst Gift – a larger gift (usually 2K, 5K or 10K) that can be matched and used to spur lots of phone activity, causes a “chemical” reaction as people seek to maximize what they see as “smaller” gifts Challenge – human behavior-altering expression similar to a dare; seemingly the only way to get phones ringing when everything is dead Deadline – largely a fiction, deadline denotes the approximate temporal end of a challenge, which we try to hit, we really do. But we don’t. But we’re close. Double-blessing – monthly and one-time giving combined in one Share-a-thon gift Faith Promise – similar to a pledge; distinguished by the added dimensions of prayer and assumed spiritual obedience from the giver; never given out of guilt; never treated as a bill; absolutely voluntary and always appreciated First-time Giver – a listener who responds during Share-a-thon who has either 1) never given to The JOY FM, 2) given previously but stopped or was interrupted, 3) changes mode of giving from onetime to monthly. NOTE: Share-a-thon goals are based on “new” or first-time givers.

Four Percent (4%) – the percentage of The JOY FM weekly listening audience (approx. 300,000) who have ever given financial support to The JOY FM, which is about 12,000 listeners Goal – the number of MMMPs needed to fund The JOY FM’s expected expenses over the following 12 months; sometimes expressed in terms of interim numbers of calls, partners or dollars Holbrook – outmoded; taken from the name of an old radio preacher who used to holler over the music, our term for interrupting a song to bring you vital information, like our phone number, the artist giving you our phone number, one of our cute kids giving you our phone number, or an inane sound effect; used only during Share-a-thon Match – an amount, usually $1000 or more, which a contributor is willing to give based on other listeners raising that same amount with smaller gifts combined Ministry – expression that emphasizes the faith-based, Christ-centered mission of The JOY FM which is a governing principle and underlying motive for everything we do, dependent on God’s calling and sustaining grace MMMP or More Than Music Mission Partner – JOY FM listeners who contribute $30.00 a month or more, or $360.00 one-time, which is the average giving level; sustaining members of The JOY FM giving family Mo – the same thing it means on the football field Monthly – the sustaining support mode of contributions over a one-year period, which is regularly encouraged during Share-a-thon; assumed to perpetuate unless you tell us to stop One-song Challenge – challenge that is limited to the duration of one song; Frequently employed as a loophole, you may hear that “one song” more than once. One-time (Special Gift) – a gift or faith promise of any amount that is given lump-sum rather than monthly; does not have to be paid immediately or as a lump-sum; may be paid however you see fit Partners – JOY FM listeners who cross the line from consumer to contributor, from watching to making things happen; also, specifically a shorthand for MMMPs Phone Blitz (Phone Explosion) – a sonic phenomenon which occurs when all 23 phone lines are jammed with calls; causes mass hysteria and enhanced progress toward the goal Phone Room (or Prayer Room, Phone Central, Volunteer Room, etc.) – medium-sized room adjacent to the main studio (control room), separated by “soundproof” glass, where up to 12 volunteers answer phones, take faith promises, chat, fellowship, pray and laugh a lot Rule 1736 – another loophole; If we start a song before the clock runs out on a challenge, we get the duration of the song to finish the challenge. Plus the calls that are on when the song ends. Plus the ones that come in as we’re thanking people. We do what we can to win, people. Share-a-thon (alt. Sharathon) – originally a pun on marathon and the Christian virtue of grace-giving (caritas, charity, sharing); We coined this back in the 70s. It stuck.

Shockamoto – not to be confused with a type of sushi, this term is used whenever 13 of the 23-line Share-a-thon phone banks receive simultaneous calls, causing a rollover from bank 1 to bank 2; this phenomenon heard frequently during challenges, creating a bit of a frenzy Song Song – outmoded term coined by Brother Jim to distinguish background instrumental music from actual hits from The JOY FM playlist; often used with a circular finger motion that denotes “shut up and play the music”; WARNING: Do not attempt at home or while driving Special Gift – See One-Time above. Too-small – description of a dollar amount not worth giving which exists only in the mind of a potential giver Us – both The JOY FM community as a whole and The JOY FM as a not-for-profit entity needing your support; usage is context driven You – the key to making Share-a-thon a success
