Sheep Scientist Role: Research Scientist (sheep) Band: D Function: Technical, Research Banding Descriptor: Specialist roles that are qualified in their field/s of expertise or qualified by evidenced experience. These roles will be able to contribute and input into new policies/ approaches or design its content. They will be expected to resolve issues and provide solutions. These roles typically require supervisory/team leader responsibilities. Contribution to Corporate Business Plan: Contributing and Developing Role purpose: Direct management of the research programme within designated areas, from inception to report by liaison with key stakeholders, and eventually provide a lead for specific technical topics. Specific role purpose: To work with the senior scientist to manage the sheep research and associated knowledge exchange portfolio under the following themes: building sustainable animal health, managing resources efficiently and sustainably, realising genetic potential and driving precision technology into practice Key responsibilities: • • • • • • • • • •

Identify priority areas for research and knowledge exchange activity, in consultation with key stakeholders Develop research and knowledge exchange strategies for technical activity Management of a range of external contracts to ensure research and knowledge exchange deliverables Exploit opportunities from matrix working by taking an active role in the research and development of cross-sector initiatives and theme activity groups Recommend improvements in processes and assist in the development of new ideas and approaches Be the first point of contact for technical enquiries for managed projects Understands the needs of the audience and delivers resources and information in an appropriate format Work with colleagues in knowledge exchange and communications to translate research results to key messages Maintain and update scientific and technical knowledge in field of expertise Collate technical information for literature reviews and inclusion in publications

Job Specific Responsibilities: • • • • • • •

To act as an industry authority on sheep science, with specific expertise on farming systems, nutrition, health and welfare To provide timely advice to colleagues on all aspects of sheep science Respond to detailed internal/external queries in a professional and timely manner Planning and delivery of levy payer facing knowledge exchange resources Writing technical guidance, including articles and bulletins Writing and delivering presentations to a range of audiences Work with colleagues to coordinate the technical content of levy payer events

Delegated Authority: •

No budgetary responsibility, although would be involved in financial management of funded projects

Knowledge: • • • •

Relevant degree in agricultural or related discipline Postgraduate degree in production science or equivalent experience, is desirable Relevant experience of sheep industry and/or in applied agricultural research Proven project management track record
