BCPVPA Technology for Professional Learning (T4PL) Series 2 [Nov & Dec] Now online for viewing: http://bit.ly/2fLouxl

Integrating wellbeing into the culture of schools: Research and practice with Mali Bain and Stephen Smith VIEW This webinar provides an overview of the latest research on why social and emotional wellbeing is important for success in school and in life and provides a tool that you can use to share that message. Managing in a unionized environment with Kit Krieger VIEW Member surveys conducted by the BCPVPA in 2013 and 2016 reveal that more than 60 percent of principals and vice-principals have not received training on how to manage in a unionized workplace. The ability to effectively manage employee unions and to understand the collective agreement has great import for relationships, the ability to manage change and on district finances and liability. Self-assessment of core competencies with Pat Horstead VIEW The self assessment of core competencies provides an opportunity for the student to describe themself as a learner. It is important that we have a clear understanding of the purpose, how to develop and promote core competencies within our students and the ways that we can ensure that the self assessment is meaningful and relevant. Vision to action: A new take on school planning with Pius Ryan VIEW Pius reviews major shifts in political and organizational thinking in relation to school planning process. In addition, he shares school-specific, practical, action planning within SD44 School District. Aboriginal education and equity with Scott Benwell and Kaleb Child VIEW Scott and Kaleb present their provincial work on Aboriginal education and equity. With a strong belief in the power of public education to deliver high quality service to all, Scott and Kaleb are in the process of developing a framework for schools and districts to use to assess system effectiveness and responsiveness to Aboriginal learners, families, and communities. eNews 1

Leading and Teaching in BC Schools Participate BCSSA/TRU survey (deadline extended to December 15)

Three $100 Indigo $100 Indigo gift cards will be donated to the President of the BCPVPA Chapter with the gift cards highest percentage response in her/his category (small/medium/large), providing to be awarded that response rate is above 45%. The cards can be used as the Chapter wishes.

The survey

is part of a larger BCSSA-sponsored study in which most of the province’s districts are participating. All responses will be absolutely anonymous: no individual or school will be identified in reports of the results. You are asked to identify your district only to assist in data analysis. Data is being gathered from principals and vice-principals as well as senior school district leaders. The researchers will then use provincial and locally available other data (FSA, Tell Them from Me, etc.) to connect how leadership at the school and district levels relates to valued student outcomes. Note: this is not a link only to student achievement data. Valued student outcomes includes more than achievement. The results will provide part of the data for a study aiming to better understand the characteristics of high-performing districts, how they become high-performing, and which approaches to district leadership are most useful for such purposes. Because district effects on students are mediated by key features of schools, classrooms, and families, a central goal of the study will be to identify those features that are the most productive focus of intervention by school and district leaders. Results of the study will be widely shared with school and district leaders in the province. Notes on privacy: 1) All individual responses will be completely anonymous. The request for district identifiers is to allow for data aggregation; 2) only aggregate data will be shared and there will be no data to identify specific districts; 3) if a district is very small or has few respondents, the usefulness of the data will be considered and the researchers will consider creating a small districts category comprised of multiple small districts (According to the research, small districts function differently, and have unique characteristics and the results might tell a valuable small districts story.) The survey should take 20-25 minutes to complete and is open until December 15.

T

his past week in Vancouver, Connecting Landscapes, the annual Learning Forward conference, provided an opportunity to connect with colleagues around North America and beyond to share our understandings, perspectives, and resources. It was great to see so many BCPVPA members as attendees and presenters at this high-profile, international event. As I mentioned last week, we have a great deal to celebrate within our province and even more now with the recent release of the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) results.

It was somewhat surreal to be attending an international conference and at the same time learn that BC students rank number one in the world in reading according to PISA’s recently released report. The results created quite a buzz of conversations and responses from the more than 3000 attendees outside of BC as they work hard, in their own jurisdictions, to achieve what we have accomplished in BC. They generously recognized our achievement. Undoubtedly, there will be detractors and critics who point to a number of inequities and real challenges that still exist within our system. But our critics, both those inside and outside our system who believe that no success is sufficient reason to celebrate, are missing a truly good news story about BC’s public education system. Educational leadership unfolds progressively without any fixed end-point or stops and starts along the way. Schools and systems improve in small, and at times imperceptible increments, that cumulatively have a positive impact on student success. Our students’ PISA achievement is a result of the continued focus and support that school leaders and teachers provide. For many years, I have been part of a team that has led a district-wide professional learning community (PLC) initiative in my home district. One of our significant PLC strategies is our belief that leaders must create opportunities to celebrate and share successes. Celebrating and sharing successes are key drivers in building continued improvement and renewing our commitment to ongoing student success. While the PISA results reflect the success of 15 year-olds in our system, we know that their path to success began on their first day of Kindergarten and that school leaders and teachers at all levels have had a hand in their success. So, with that in mind I encourage all of you to take a moment to reflect on the enormity of this achievement and celebrate with a victory lap. Have a great weekend, Kevin
