FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTIC SALE

hey saved the best for last at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale. The sale-topping Medaglia d'Oro colt was bought by agent Dennis O'Neill for $1.2 million during the waning hours of the May 22 final session of the twoday auction, which ended on nearly even terms with the record 2017 sale. Consignors Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo purchased the colt, who breezed an eighth-mile in :10 1/5, co-second-fastest at the distance during the under tack show, for $475,000 from the Four Star Sales consignment at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale. "We loved the breeze obviously; he really galloped amazing and then to see him at the end of the shank, we were hooked," said O'Neill, adding he bought the colt on behalf of a new Middle Eastern client who does not want to be identified. "He just said he wanted the best horse in the sale. From the time we laid eyes on

him, we fell in love with him. "We were hoping not to go that high, but we did. We're really, really excited. We were looking for a (Kentucky) Derby horse and hope this is the one." Agent Donato Lanni was the underbidder during the protracted war Agent Dennis O’Neill at the for the sale-topper, Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale consigned as Hip 565. O'Neill said the colt will be trained in Southern California by his brother, Doug O'Neill. Hartley was thrilled with the outcome, noting that he and DeRenzo had been nervous waiting out the rest of the sale until their prized colt entered the ring. "There is nothing like stress," Hartley said. "It was just exciting. (Buyers) wait for those kind. It's just exciting to be able to come here and sell these horses. For us to have a place to come this late in the year and give these horses time to develop, makes a big difference." The Medaglia d'Oro colt and a More Than Ready colt sold — during Monday's session for $750,000 that was acquired as a yearling for $500,000 — reflected the decision by Hartley and DeRenzo to step up the price they paid for pinhook prospects. "It's a lot of risk to spend that much on a yearling," Hartley said. "You worry about them from the time you get them home until the time you get them here. Everything has to go right and they have to perform." Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm and Besilu Stables, the colt is out of the grade 3-winning Tapit mare Tapicat and is from the

FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTIC SALE

$1.2M MEDAGLIA D’ORO COLT TOPS SOLID MIDLANTIC SALE female family of multiple grade 1 winner and sire Cat Thief and multiple grade 3 winner Train Robbery. From 600 cataloged, Fasig-Tipton reported 333 horses sold for gross receipts of $24,868,500, a slight decline from the $25,237,000 total paid for 330 head a year ago. The average of $74,680 was down 2.3% from the $76,476 figure in 2017 and the median price improved 8.6% to $38,000 from $35,000 last year. The 97 horses bought back represented 22.5% through the ring, compared with an RNA rate of 19.9% when 82 horses went unsold last year. "I thought it was a good sale from start to finish," Midlantic sale director Paget Bennett said. "We got people here I hadn't seen here before, so it's always good to have new faces here. I think they went home with purchases that will get them on the (future catalog) covers or that will get them into a winner's circle quickly." Bennett said the sale topper and other big purchases were indicative of an increase in quality of horses offered at the sale. "The consignors have just gotten so confident in bringing those type of horses to this mareketplace," she said. "They love the racetrack, they love the area, the timing all works. They have been rewarded in the past and confident enough to do it year after year." The buying bench consisted mainly of domestic buyers boosted by a few international attendees, with an especially strong presence from Korean representatives. Buying under the KOID and SROA (KOID) names, Koreans accounted for 24 horses bought for a total $1,218,000, the highest price being $110,000 for a Flashback colt (Hip 573). Prominent Mid-Atlantic owner Chuck Zacney, accompanied by trainer John Servis, said he found it to be mostly a buyers' market. "I'm not sure what we were expecting coming in," he said. "We were looking more for quality than quantity. I think we got some really good stock at reasonable BLOODHORSE DAILY

prices. It's been a real solid market." "There are a lot of trainers here looking for good, sound horses," said Jimbo Gladwell of Top Line Sales. "The (workout) time is not playing as much of a factor. It's kind of a breath of fresh air to see these trainers come in and watch just how they move and how they show—just good, usable horses." Gladwell said Top Line had a high clearance rate as a result of setting practical reserve prices. "If you've put reasonable reserves on them we've got them moved," he said. Consignor Cary Frommer said the second day's activity was more vibrant than the Monday opener. "The market today was better than yesterday," the South Carolinian said. "I've sold two—for $300,000 and $340,000—so I'm finding today's market good, but it was very tough yesterday, I thought. It's like that every year. "(On) the first day people are waiting. They don't want to spend all their money on the first day and not have anything left for the second day, and unless you have a really standout horse on the first day, you might get missed. So as the day went on and people weren't buying horses, they came back to the barn to see my RNA's and I ended up getting them all sold. But that's not the way I like to do it." FASIG-TIPTON MIDLANTIC SALE

PETERSEN LANDS $925,000 UNION RAGS COLT AT FASIG-TIPTON By Meredith Daugherty t @BH_MDaugherty

I

n an exciting final hour of the May 22 session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale of 2-year-olds in training, a Union Rags colt from Bobby Dodd's consignment was purchased for $925,000 by Michael Lund Petersen. "I have no words," Dodd said of the price, secondhighest of the two-day sale. "It was a nice horse. Everything went right and it ended right. That's about all I can say." The colt, who turned in the show-stopping fastest eighth-mile breeze of :10 flat during the three-day under tack show, was offered as Hip 561. While the pace prior to his entering the ring was quiet, once he arrived there was no denying he was exactly what the

audience had been waiting for as he set off a bidding war that surprised even Dodd. "I was expecting it to bring the upside of $500,000,” he said. “I didn't think we'd get that close to a million but I did think we'd get $650,000, maybe $750,000. But you know, you never know when lightning is going to strike in this business. That's why we do it. "That is huge on this racetrack," Dodd said of the colt's under tack show time. "I'll take :10 2/5 all day long here, and :10 1/5 is awesome. But :10 flat with a gallop out like he had in :20 3/5 ... that's unbelievable. And then we came back and got my veterinarians and the horse had a good physical, so we are truly blessed. " Named Tangled Union, the colt was bred in New York by Avanti Stable and was purchased for $90,000 by Grand Oaks from Paramount Sales' consignment at the 2017 Saratoga New York-bred preferred yearlings sale. The bay 2-year-old is out of the winning Tale of the Cat mare Tanglewood Tale and is the second foal from his dam. He is a full brother to winner Big Thicket and a half brother to a yearling filly named Lemonina. Tanglewood Tale foaled a colt by Tiznow in 2018. Union Rags is a sire of three crops including 2-year-olds of 2018. He entered stud in 2013 and stands at Lane's End Farm, where his advertised fee was $60,000 this year. BH

RYAN STRIKES FOR MACLEAN'S MUSIC COLT AT FASIG-TIPTON By Meredith Daugherty t @BH_MDaugherty

FASIG-TIPTON PHOTOS

he pace danced to a slightly faster beat on the second day of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds in training May 22, as several horses brought six figures within the first two hours. One of those, a Maclean's Music colt consigned as Hip 384 named Better B Gud to Me, was purchased by agent Mike Ryan for $325,000 from the De Meric Sales consignment. During the May 21 first session of the sale, another Maclean's Music colt—consigned as Hip 146 by Scanlon Training and Sales—brought a comparable price of $300,000. Ryan, who looked extensively at both colts prior to the start of the sale, expressed his admiration for the progeny of the young sire. "The colt yesterday was exceptional. He was the image of Maclean's Music," Ryan said. "I thought this colt was equal to him if not better. The difference is, this one is New York-bred." Maclean's Music stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farms, where his advertised fee was $25,000 in 2018. Ryan, who purchased last year's Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Cloud Computing (by Maclean's Music) for $200,000 from the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consignment at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale, was excited about the similarities he witnessed between the 2-year-old and the American classic winner during the Midlantic sale's under tack show.

Mike Ryan at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale

"He's very like Cloud Computing but maybe not quite as large," Ryan said of Hip 384. "Cloud Computing is a very imposing, very powerful, very impressive horse. I've liked Maclean's Music since the get-go. The first one I ever bought was Cloud Computing and I think he's a sire that's going to continue to rise." "He's bred the same way," Ryan said. "Cloud Computing is out of an A.P. Indy mare and he (Better B Gud to Me) is out of a Mineshaft mare. It's the same cross. So hopefully, we're right a second time." BH

imilar to the most recent juvenile sale in Florida, a runner by Medaglia d'Oro stole the limelight at the tail end of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale in Maryland. The $1.2 million colt anchored the Darley sire at the top of the sire rankings with a $710,000 average for two sold during the May 21-22 sale. The top-selling bay colt, consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds as agent, is out of the graded stakes-winning Tapicat, a daughter of Tapit, and was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys and Besilu Stable. Tapicat was bred by Winchell Thoroughbreds and Gainesway, who sold her at the Keeneland September yearling sale for $725,000 to Benjamin Leon Jr.'s Besilu Stable. After a successful campaign that included a win in the Florida Oaks (G3T), Leon sold the filly for $2.2 million at the 2016 Keeneland November breeding stock sale in foal to Pioneerof the Nile to Summer Wind Equine. NFL WANTS FEDS TO ENACT SPORTS WAGERING STANDARDS By Frank Angst t @BH_FAngst

hile states will regulate any expanded sports wagering, the National Football League is calling on the federal government to put minimum standards in place. A United States Supreme Court decision May 14 cleared the way for states to legalize sports wagering. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement May 21 calling on federal lawmakers to put minimum standards in place for the states that choose to offer sports wagering. Goodell's statement read: "As it was for my predecessors, there is no greater priority for me as the commissioner of the National Football League than protecting the integrity of our sport. Our fans, our players, and our coaches deserve to know that we are doing everything possible to ensure no improper influences affect how the game is played on the field. This week's ruling by the Supreme Court has no effect on that unwavering commitment. "We have spent considerable time planning for the potential of broadly legalized sports gambling and are prepared to address these changes in a thoughtful and comprehensive way, including substantial education and compliance training for our clubs, players, employees, and partners. These efforts include supporting common sense legislation that protects our players, coaches, and fans and maintains public confidence in our games. "We are asking Congress to enact uniform standards for states that choose to legalize sports betting that include, at a minimum, four core principles: 1. There must be substantial consumer protections; 2. Sports leagues can protect our content and intellectual property from those who attempt to steal or misuse it;

Australian Prince is a homebred for Russian owner Alexander V. Nezhenets, who bred the colt in Ireland out of the winning Pivotal mare Mail Princess. Nezhenets bought the mare for 170,000 guineas (US$283,700) at the 2010 Tattersalls October yearling sale and raced her in Russia. Australian Prince races under the nom de course Progress Stud Farm and is trained by Ivan Lykov. He won the six-furlong Krasnodar Colts Trial Stakes by a head over Fast Bird (by Take Charge Indy). Two lengths back in third was Rising Dream, a colt by New Year's Day. Australia had one other starter May 19, a filly named Beyond Reason, who made her racing debut at Newmarket in England in the Betway EBF Fillies novice Australia at Coolmore Stud in Ireland stakes, in which she finished second.

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS: ALMOND EYE A STAR FOR LORD KANALOA By Alan Porter t @pedigreeconsult

LORD KANALOA, b, 2008

Kingmambo, 1990 Manfath, 1991 Storm Cat, 1983

I

MASAKAZU TAKAHASHI

n December of 2013, Japanese sprint star Lord Kanaloa ended his spectacular career with a five-length victory over Sole Power—himself successful in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot that summer—in the Longines Hong Kong Sprint (G1). A winner of 13 of his 19 starts, Lord Kanaloa only finished worse than second once (when third in the group 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen). Six of his triumphs came at the top level including back-to-back renewals of both the Hong Kong Sprint (G1) and the Sprinters Stakes (G1), and he was also successful in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and one-mile Yasuda Kinen (G1). In addition to twice being honored as Japan's champion sprinter and earning a Horse of the Year title there, Lord Kanaloa was also official rated the world's top sprint male for 2013. Despite his brilliance at shorter distances, Lord Kanaloa, whose sire and dam were both imported from the United States in utero, has a pedigree flavored with classic influences. His sire, King Kamehameha, is by Kingmambo out of the Last Tycoon mare Manfath, whose first living foal was the Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner The Deputy. Champion 3-year-old colt in Japan, King Kamehameha won seven of eight starts, including the

NHK Mile Cup (G1) and Tokyo Yushan (Japanese Derby, G1) which he took in course-record time. At stud, King Kamehameha has been the the leading non-Sunday Silence line stallion of his era, twice taking the champion sire crown. Lord Kanaloa's dam, Lady Blossom, a winner of five races, was a daughter of Storm Cat and the champion 3-year-old filly Saratoga Dew, the first New York-bred to earn an Eclipse Award. A five-time winner in Japan, Lady Blossom owned an interesting pedigree pattern as her fourth dam, Syrian Sea, was a sister to Storm Cat's broodmare sire, Secretariat, giving her siblings 3x4. The early signs are that Lord Kanaloa is going to be able to transmit some of those classic attributes to his offspring. His first-crop daughter Almond Eye confirmed herself as the leader of her division May 20 by adding the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, G1) to her victory in the Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas, G1). Lord Kanaloa is also represented by Stelvio, successful in the nine-furlong Fuji TV Sho Spring Stakes (G2). The chance of a stallion being successful in Japan is going to be significantly increased if he proves to have an affinity for the all-conquering Sunday Silence line, and this certainly appears to be the case for Lord Kanaloa. Not only is Almond Eye out of a Sunday Silence mare, as is Lord Kanaloa's stakes-placed daughter Gulielma, but Stelvio has a second dam by Sunday Silence, and another Lord Kanaloa black-type winner, Amphitrite, is out of a mare by Fuji Kiseki, a son of Sunday Silence. Almond Eye's dam, Fusaichi Pandora, was also a very accomplished performer in her own right. She won

PEDIGREE ANALYSIS: ALMOND EYE A STAR FOR LORD KANALOA (continued from page 18) two black-type events, including the 2006 renewal of the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup, and was second in the same event the following year when it was internationally recognized as a grade 1 event. She was also beaten only five lengths when fifth to Deep Impact in the Japan Cup (G1). Fusaichi Pandora's dam, the Nureyev mare Lotta Lace, was unraced, but was extremely well-bred. Her dam, Sex Appeal, produced a truly great horse in El Gran Senor— whose triumphs included the General Accident (Two Thousand Guineas, G1) and Joe McGrath Irish Sweeps Derby (G1)—and also produced champion English and Irish 2-year-old Try My Best; that pair both by Nureyev's sire, Northern Dancer. Both Nureyev and Try My Best

appear in the pedigree of King Kamehameha—so Almond Eye is linebred to the sire and dam of Lotta Lace—and duplications of Sex Appeal also feature in the pedigrees of other group and grade 1 winners Chinchon, Grace Hall, and Ramonti. All told, Sex Appeal, a daughter of Buckpasser, appears in the direct female line of more than 50 stakes winners. Her dam, Best in Show, won the Comely Stakes and was Broodmare of the Year for 1982. Her offspring include the Kentucky Oaks (G1) victress Blush With Pride, and among her other notable descendants are Belmont Stakes (G1) scorers Rags to Riches and Jazil; Peeping Fawn, who took the Irish Oaks (G1); Xaar, champion at 2 and 3 in France; Close Hatches, champion older mare in the U.S. for 2014; champion U.S. sprinter Aldebaran; European champion miler Spinning World; and the great Australian sire Redoute's Choice.
