Simulation training in neonatology in Romania

Nicu Fota, CRED Foundation, Romania Geneva, 16.01.2014

RoNeonat Project • 2002-2007 Romanian-Swiss Neonatology Project / THE Project, modernising Romanian neonatology system / SDC funded – Infrastructure and equipment (HTM) – Medical staff: training programs – Experience exchange / professional networking – Regionalisation of care (3 levels) and referral – QM, clinical practice guidelines

Training program – continuing medical education in neonatology • ToT – Swiss stages

• Curriculum – Neonatal resuscitation, CPAP etc..

• Training materials and equipment

Training program – continuing medical education in neonatology • Regional training centers organised around level III neonatal ICUs

• More than 1,000 trainees (doctors and nurses) in 7 regional training centers • At least 1 training session per hospital per year

WB Health Reform Program (2008-2012) • Infrastructure and equipment at national level • Medical staff: national training program

EU funded project in neonatology 2011-2012 • E-learning – Internet platform – Moderators/trainers

• Simulation – Mobile training unit: simulator, computer, video unit, projector, air compressor, connectors – Training centers (real facility conditions, resuscitation table) – Trainers + bioengineer

Main steps • Curricula adaptation – e-learning: animation & digitisation – Simulation: scenarios

• Investment in training equipment (BabySim) • Training Methodology • Train the trainers

Lesson learnt •

• •

Large scale training programs: uniformity at national level Very successful practical sessions / training in teams Sustainability effects: training for young doctors and nurses and students’ exams Mobility vs. high cost investment

Current situation / perspectives • Newly equipped simulation centers at medical university level: several specialisations • Still, investment cost is high • Private initiative

Thank you! Switzerland, for your support in modernising the Romanian neonatology
