On the previous page, you will have noticed that “Content” is circled in red. This is because writing content is important to one’s business. Why? Content is what attracts potential customers to your website and/or social media pages. Content marketing is the thread that makes a sheet, the sheet being marketing communications. Since we are talking about thread and sheets, let us talk about thread count. With any sheet, there is a thread count. The higher the thread count the softer the sheet. Many choose a higher thread count, since they do not want to lay on a sheet that feels like cardboard. Why are we talking about thread count? We link the quality of written content to thread count. Content that does not engage, educate and/or inform the reader is an example of a sheet that has a thread count of 150 (feels like cardboard). Content that informs or educates but does not engage the reader is an example of a sheet that has a thread count of 300 (feels soft). Content that engages and informs or educates the reader has a thread count of 400+ (feels like silk). Essentially, content connects a business to the consumer and the consumer to the business. The connection is the engagement we mentioned earlier. To create engagement, one has to understand the reader’s mind, and in order to do so, one has to know how the reader thinks (i.e., are they skeptics, do they seek a second opinion?) and what their interests and opinions are. Once you get to know the reader, you can choose words that, when they come together, create engagement. Let us further expand on creating engagement and talk about creating a call to action. A call to action is when the reader is asked to perform an action (i.e., tell us what you think about x or y, like our page). A call to action creates further engagement. Content marketing is simple: know your reader, educate or inform, and engage them. A side note and FYI: content marketing is nothing new and has been around since 1895 (when John Deere began publishing The Furrow). What is your content’s thread count?
