What is Social Emotional (SEL) Learning? Learning how to… ◦ understand and manage emotions ◦ set and achieve goals ◦ demonstrate empathy for others ◦ establish and maintain positive relationships ◦ making responsible decisions

Why is Social Emotional Learning Important? We know and believe that social and emotional learning (SEL) has been shown to enhance the well-being of students, overall achievement, and positive life outcomes.

Research has shown that… ◦ SEL programs show immediate improvements in mental health, social skills, and academic achievement ◦ Students exposed to SEL in school continue have fewer conduct problems, less emotional distress, and lower drug use, among many other benefits when they grow up into being adults. ◦ Employers are having trouble finding recent graduates to fill vacancies. Even though applicants had the technical abilities, they lacked the communication, adaptability, decision-making, and problem-solving skills needed to do the job.
