Finding Info-in-Graphics in Social Studies

Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: •

Identify relevant information in infographics

Use context to make qualitative and/or quantitative inferences about the information presented

Infographics: Visual Information All four GED Tests include visually presented information known as infographics.

You will encounter several different types of infographics on Test Day, including timelines, charts, and graphs.

Look for clues in the question stem before examining the infographic to get a better sense of where to focus your attention. If a question stem is light on clues, you can use information in the answer choices to help guide you.

Visually Presented Information When analyzing photographs, political cartoons or other visuals, ask yourself: •

What ideas or themes are visually represented?

What written elements are there and how do they relate to the topic?

Is the image supporting or reacting against a person, idea, or event?

Information from Multiple Sources Some questions combine information from text and graphics. To answer these questions effectively, make connections between the different sources and look for relevant information in each based on clues in the question stem.

Use your whiteboards to keep track of each source. There’s no need to rely on your own memory! To combine information from graphs, tables or other graphics with passages, ask yourself: •

How does this information relate to the main ideas of the passage?

How do the labels for the title, x-axis, and y-axis relate to the written content?

What trends are presented in the data support or contrast the passages?

What would happen if the data continued beyond the range shown?

Mixed Practice The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. At one time, sea otters populated the entire coast of what is now the state of California and farther south along Mexico’s Baja California coastline. Prior

to 1741, the sea otter population worldwide is estimated to have been 150,000–300,000.

Between 1741 and 1911, however, sea otters

were hunted extensively for their fur, and the world population fell to just 1,000–2,000

Mixed Practice individuals. By 1911, the wild sea otter population in California was limited exclusively to a small area around Monterey Bay. Fortunately, an international ban on hunting, conservation efforts, and programs to reintroduce the sea otter into previously

populated areas have contributed to numbers rebounding, and the species now occupies about two-thirds of its former range. Despite these successes, sea otter populations in

California have declined, and the sea otter remains classified as an endangered species.
