SOLUTION BRIEF GLOBALSTAR STX3 DATA MODEM OIL AND GAS

M2M Remote Monitoring Device Powered by Globalstar Satellite Technology,

A GAME-CHANGER FOR OIL AND GAS COMPANIES INNOVATIVE THINKING The resource sector is increasingly turning to satellite solutions to bring dependable, fast mobile coverage to operations and to connect its growing Machine-to-Machine (M2M) networks. Simple, reliable, adaptable. Those were the three guiding principles for Calgary-based Mobiltex Data Ltd., a leading manufacturer of industrial mobile data systems, when it set about designing its transformative M2M monitoring device for North America’s oil and gas industry. The CorTalk® RMU1 is a compact remote monitoring unit that integrates with existing pipeline infrastructure – a game-changer for the industry. The device uses Globalstar’s STX3 data transmitter, operating on the world’s most modern satellite network. “We work with well over 100 THE RESOURCE SECTOR IS oil and gas companies across INCREASINGLY TURNING TO Canada and the U.S. providing SATELLITE SOLUTIONS TO BRING solutions for monitoring pipeline DEPENDABLE, FAST MOBILE external corrosion,” says Jerry Chilibecki, engineering director COVERAGE TO OPERATIONS AND TO CONNECT ITS GROWING MACHINEof Mobiltex, one of the first companies to design an M2M TO-MACHINE (M2M) NETWORKS. device specifically around the STX3 data transmitter. “Because the STX3 is so compact (it’s about the size of a quarter), and efficient with the lowest power consumption in the industry, we were able to integrate the complete antenna system, modem, battery and remote measurement elements and retrofit it into existing industry standard 3-inch diameter test stations along remote areas of pipeline.”

THE BACKDROP Pipeline corrosion and complying with government regulations to monitor that corrosion is a big issue for oil and gas companies. From an engineering perspective, ensuring performance and compliance with jurisdictional regulations is only possible with the accurate, and frequent monitoring of corrosion mitigation systems. The challenge is how to do that in a cost-effective, reliable way when pipelines are often located in remote, hostile environments (pipelines also act as lightning magnets even when buried underground) with limited or no access to terrestrial communications and no electrical power supply. At the same time, there are hundreds of thousands of test stations along pipelines across North America that serve as troubleshootering locations to measure

mitigation system performance. Before remote monitoring technology started to be deployed in the 1990s, field workers had to drive several hours or helicopter out to these test stations to record the readings. This was not only costly from a time, people and fuel perspective, but the tools “THAT’S WHY WE CHOSE used often generated inconsistent results.

Remote satellite-based monitoring is automated, eliminating the need for physical site visits and because the same equipment is being used, readings provide engineers with accurate and repeatable results. Globalstar’s STX3 was specifically designed to be easily integrated into a broad range of M2M devices and applications to meet a range of remote sensing, tracking and monitoring needs. With the lowest power consumption in the M2M industry, the STX3 global simplex transmitter can operate for months or years without requiring human intervention – ideal for companies operating in challenging areas within the oil and gas industry.

SATELLITE VOICE AND DATA SOLUTIONS FOR CANADA’S NATURAL RESOURCE SECTOR CHANGING THE GAME REMOTELY Satellite technology has paved the way for remote troubleshooting of oil and gas pipelines. In the past, the only way to communicate with these remote sites was to install expensive private terrestrial radio systems. Still, not all satellite technology is created equal. Geostationary systems, for example, require a significant amount of RF power, large batteries and costly solar panels, which are often vandalized and damaged placing additional budget strains on operating budgets and field resources. “Globalstar’s Low Earth Orbit constellation provides a big advantage both because of the stability of the network and the fact that it does not need as much RF power to communicate with the satellites. The result is lower demands on battery systems and overall operational efficiencies,” says Jerry Chilibecki, Mobiltex Data Ltd. “That’s why we chose Globalstar’s Simplex STX3 modem. The modem is compact, easy to integrate, affordable and extremely power efficient, which allows our batteries to last between 5 and 10 years, depending on the reporting frequency. Our objective was to create a simple, quick-to-install device that could easily integrate with the hundreds of thousands of corrosion test points already deployed on pipelines across North America. Globalstar’s STX3 modem has made that possible.” Mobiltex Data Ltd. located in Calgary Alberta has been providing high reliability remote monitoring solutions for the cathodic protection industry for 23 years.
