Solution Overview Water Utility Intelligence Solution A Hitachi and OSIsoft Partnership

Better Water Management

Utilities around the world are struggling with aging infrastructure and lack of integrated information about their operations. As a result, this leads to significant water losses and wasted energy. To address the challenges Hitachi and OSIsoft have partnered to leverage our joint deep subject matter expertise to effectively help solve inefficiencies in water utility operations. Today, city water utilities in the US on average lose up to 30 percent of their water resources to non-revenue costs[1]. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates 1.7 trillion gallons of water are leaked each year. In addition to these serious inefficiencies, the American Water Works Association estimates that there are close to 237,600 main breaks per year, just in the US alone, leading to approximately $2.8 billion in lost yearly revenue.

The Hitachi and OSIsoft Water Utility Intelligence Solution

Hitachi Ltd’s global consulting company, Hitachi Consulting, is a recognized leader in delivering proven IT and management consulting solutions to global companies across many industries, including water management. In 2013, Hitachi, Ltd. established the Hitachi Global Center for Innovative Analytics (HGC-IA) to provide customers with innovative solutions that leverage the power of big data. Together, Hitachi Consulting and HGC-IA bring deep industry knowledge and experience to support water utilities in optimizing their operations through big data analytics and strategic decision-making.

Hitachi and OSIsoft have partnered to combine Hitachi’s business consulting and big data services with OSIsoft’s PI System infrastructure to help ensure that utilities have an integrated and holistic view of their operations. The PI System is the industry standard in enterprise infrastructure for management of real-time data and events. Performance, scalability, out of the box integration, and speed of implementation are just a few differentiators. The PI System is vendor agnostic and provides calculation and visualization tools that are configured to address industry issues instead of the need for programming and coding a solution.

Together, Hitachi and OSIsoft help Utilities to effectively improve water management by:

nn Transform Data into Insight: Utilizing

the PI System, we help our clients capture real-time monitoring data on all applicable assets such as pipes, pumps, and pressureflow meters, into one system. We then conduct historical and predictive analytics on this large amount of data to provide better visibility into business operations and identify issues, such as potential leaks or safety concerns, before they occur. nn Reduce Costs through Operational

Efficiencies: With this improved insight and understanding, we help our clients develop strategies and key performance indicators to improve their business operations. For example, we help enhance leak detection and prevent water and energy loss, saving money and time. In

addition, with this integrated view of information, we optimize maintenance schedules and asset lifecycles, as well as improve compliance reporting, billing processes, and customer service. nn Advance Sustainability: Our solution

has proven to save our clients water, energy, and greenhouse gas emissions. Our team will help collect and document your sustainability success, and set appropriate sustainability goals, for improved reporting and communication to shareholders and end customers. In addition, we can help ensure that operations are resilient in the face of climate change. nn Smart Meters Save: As part of our

solution, we help Utilities to implement a smart water network. Smart water networks could save Utilities up to $12 billion per year and significant amounts of water lost to undetected leaks. The operational cost reduction estimated from smart meters range from 3 percent to 5 percent. On average our customers are saving nearly $2 per person served each year reducing leakage and energy consumption respectively.

“ Today, U.S. city water utilities lose up to 30 percent of their water resources to nonrevenue costs[1].”

Award winning, proven solution

Halifax Water is Drying up Water Leaks with the PI System

Halifax Water provides water and wastewater services to nearly 350,000 people. For the past decade, Halifax has relied on OSIsoft’s PI System to continuously improve and increase efficiencies to secure optimal operation. Through real-time data monitoring Halifax is able to identify and solve water leaks quickly and proactively predict future instances. The PI system provides visualization tools matching role-specific data requirements catering to engineers, operators, stakeholders, and decision makers.

Since the PI System installation Halifax Water has realized substantial benefits:

nn Water leakage is reduced by 40 million

liters per day saving C$600,000 annually nn Faster, more accurate

reporting to regulators nn Planners can use real, historic data to

better forecast future water needs nn Reduced average water main

breaks by up to 50%

“ We’ve developed new tools and practices to address leakage problems; the PI System is a centerpiece of those efforts.” Graham MacDonald Superintendent of Technical Services Halifax Water

Severn Trent Water significantly improves business operations

Severn Trent Water is the world’s fourth largest privately owned water company serving 4.2 million households and businesses across an area covering 10,000 square miles. The company has an extensive telemetry system that monitors and protects water for its customers but found that regulatory reporting was time consuming and visibility was not as robust as desired. Hitachi Consulting helped Severn Trent pull asset performance data from telemetry systems and multiple sources into one single reporting database. Using this, we were able to measure 25 operational key performance indicators relating to equipment performance, operating costs, water flow, quality, wastage and power outage. We then delivered summaries containing meaningful and usable data to executives via daily management dashboards. We also created a self-service reporting environment enabling 400 managers and analysts to drill into data, generate queries and build reports. This new system reduced the effort needed to create accurate energy accruals and comply with environmental regulations as well as providing enhanced visibility of water management issues. It also helped identify potential and actual equipment failures to prevent supplied water pressure issues and ensure continued supply of quality water.
