Our overall theme this issue focuses on empowering women in the workplace. We are thrilled to feature two very prominent women in the heavy construction industry on our front cover. Shantel Lipp (president of the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association) and SHCA board member Mary Panteluk (Kelly Panteluk Construction) have been forging new ground for Canadian women in the industry. Breaking the Mould is a feature about women in non-traditional work environments the magazine looks at the journey for women within these sectors. How far have we really come? This feature talks to an engineer, a machinist, and a steel worker; all strong, confident women who are passionate about their work, families and community. We also explore the opportunities for women in the automotive sector.

Mabel and Martha’s VINTAGE STYLE DÉCOR BY DAYLENE SLIZ PHOTOS NATHANIEL CARLO LORENZO

rossing the threshold into Mabel and Martha’s Vintage Style Décor boutique, is like being transported to a land where the world turns from black and white to colour. The soft glow of light, tantalizing aromas, and relaxing music draws you in and melts away the day’s stresses, while the luxurious textures, dazzling fixtures, and vast array of merchandise will keep you captivated for hours. Located in the heart of Regina’s Warehouse District, Mabel and Martha’s boutique will stimulate your senses at every turn, but shopping has never been so calming. “We wanted to create an inviting and peaceful environment where our customers could enjoy the experience,” says owners Dianna Nelson

and Barb Broda. “We offer one-of-a-kind pieces, custom designs, clothing, and jewellery for furniture.” Nelson and Broda, also known as Mabel and Martha, met in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan 21 years ago. The friendship grew from their shared passion for design and decorating, along with their dream of one day owning a boutique. After years of selling their wares at craft sales around the province, the culmination of intrepid determination and hard work paid off: Mabel and Martha’s became a reality on November 8, 2013. The open layout, with walls of exposed brick and rustic hardwood flooring, is a designer’s dream and a shopper’s

paradise. Bedroom, dining room, kitchen and bath accessories are elegantly arranged in vignettes showcasing natural wood antiques and refinished furniture. “CeCe Caldwell’s Chalk & Clay Paint is an eco-friendly paint that we use to restore and reimagine some of the furniture pieces,” says Nelson. “No stripping and minimal sanding is required and you can paint over virtually anything. It’s completely non-toxic and odour-free which makes it safe for pregnant mothers and family pets.” They sell a wide selection of CeCe Caldwell’s and Country Chic paint and offer painting classes regularly at the boutique and will also do private classes. Mabel and Martha’s is indelibly etched with the owners’ distinctive personalities

and is passionately decorated in themes that reflect each season. Their refined and exquisite taste is evident in their unique selection of merchandise. Leather satchels, hand-made by artisans in rural India, are crafted using environmentally-friendly all-natural oils and colouring methods. Rugs are woven using centuries-old braiding techniques. Luxurious sweaters and clothing from New York, Paris, Milan and Montreal are artfully displayed on antique mannequins, while delicate scarves drape nearby. Rows of candles with names like Cinnamon Bun, Maple Sugar, and Baked Apple Pie tease your senses with their subtle, delightful aromas. Linens, florals, mirrors and jewellery; cards, journals, clocks and pillows are meticulously arranged throughout. Mabel and Martha’s is gaining a strong and loyal following both locally and nationally. “Our customers range in age from their teens to 90 and come from across Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, British Columbia and the Maritimes,” says Broda. “Maritimers feel a cultural connection to the store, and our Calgary customers say it’s their ‘to go’ store.” And the boutique doesn’t just cater to women. Twenty to 25 per cent of their customers are male, some of whom have registered for the painting classes. Mabel and Martha’s is a masterpiece of cozy spaciousness, of soft light and warm sounds mixed with sensual textures and welcoming smells. It’s not just a shopping experience, it’s a way of life. LET’S TALK

Weddings BY DEAN RENWICK

WEDDING FEATURE

S

pring always gets thoughts turning to weddings. The 2017/18 wedding season is showing us some interesting trends in gowns and accessories that will put a smile on any bride’s face.

THE LATEST ON GOWNS If you loved the puritan look then you’re in luck! High collars are back! Similar to Alexander McQueen’s collection, this is slightly Victorian looking and gives you a graceful swan-like look. On the flip side of that, open necks are also showing up on the runways a lot lately. Another popular look this season is open shoulders and lowered sleeves. I love the idea of having a high collar with bare shoulders. It’s sexy and elegant! The wedding cape is another thing that seems to have a lot of presence in fashion this year. Made of everything from fur for cooler occasions to delicate lace or shimmery chiffon; the cape can come as part of the dress or a separate piece.

THE WEDDING SUIT Worn with a skirt or a pair of slacks, the wedding suit is definitely making a come back! I’ve seen a few beautiful jacket and pant sets made in white lace and lined in blush. A stunning white duchess satin could be gorgeous as well. The wedding suit is ideal for wedding number two.

WEDDING FEATURE

The great thing about the wedding suit is that it’s a great investment piece. Break it apart and wear it with other pieces in your wardrobe. Try wearing that little lace jacket with a denim skirt later on, or the lace pants with a striking little blouse for an evening of fun and frolicking.

COLOURS Aside from the classics (white, natural white, oyster and ivory), wedding colours for 2017/18 include soft pink and soft blue. Blush has been in for quite a while but now it’s being called ‘gentle pink.’ These colours are lovely but you may find them a bit too ‘girlie’ if it’s your second wedding. In that case, it’s better to do a blush pink which is almost like a taupe.

VEILS, WREATHS AND HATS These accessories are starting to tone down a bit. Fresh flowers and wreaths in the hair seem a bit too common place now that everyone is doing it. Try some

variations like one large flower in the hair or large flowered earrings. Birdcage veils are still in style because they are small and can be jewelled, pearled or just clean and simple. I’ve also seen pillbox hats which look great with a suit. It gives that classic ‘Jackie O’ look.

ACCESSORIES Your dress is the focal point, but you will need the right accessory to give the perfect finishing touch to your look. When it comes to accessories, keeping it simple is never a bad thing. How about a simple pendant necklace and matching earrings? Pearls are a timeless wedding accessory and work with any look. Sometimes you may only need a great set of earrings that make a statement. But of course, the best statement is the ring you just received. If you truly love your bling, then opt for a simple gown so you can dress it up. The new glamorous and versatile transfer tattoos are a growing trend for something slightly different this year. A ribbon belt

in your bridal colors can just add a dash of the perfect touch to coordinate with the rest of your crew. A stylish pair of shoes are always the perfect statement whether it be in style or colour. For those who want the traditional white dress, but not sure they can resist a bit of colour in their outfit, choosing a bright pair of shoes is a great idea and looks amazing in pictures. If you’ve got a colour theme going on, go for that colour in the shoe or in the lining of the shoe.

FEEL GREAT, LOOK GREAT! Remember, this is your day! Dress in the look that you love, relax and have a blast as you and your sweetheart start life together. DEAN RENWICK Wedding, graduation, business presentation, dinner party, hot date; there’s always a reason to wear a Renwick. Custom couture is how Dean Renwick became ‘Dean Renwick’. Since returning home to Regina, Sk., Canada, Dean has opened his studio, and his heart, designing sexy, sophisticated styles for the stage, screen and women of all ages, giving of his time and talent to causes he cares about and mentoring the next generation of creative couturiers.

hen Dean Renwick, Dr. Roberta McKay and Elmer Brenner became business partners, it seemed like a natural progression of their friendship. “We’ve known Dean for a long time and have had clothes designed by him for well over 10 years,” says Brenner. The couple always had the feeling that, if Renwick could be successful in his ‘outof-the-way’ second-floor shop, he could do even greater things in a store location on the ground floor.

14  Sophisticated WOMAN REGINA

New Beginnings The trio sat down together and started talking. The conversation kept rolling until they asked themselves, “why not?” A partnership was formed with the intent to move the business to a more accessible location. That’s when things really started getting serious! “It seemed to be the right time,” comments Renwick, “I had reached a glass ceiling at the other place.” McKay and Brenner found an ideal location on the corner of 12th Avenue and

comfortable and welcoming ambience. With large window along the two outer walls, there is plenty of natural light which enhances brilliance of the store. The décor colours are Renwick’s signature colours of white, red and black which are simply striking.

New Retail Service Opening in the new location has also allowed Renwick to offer his guests more retail options. More than a wedding or evening gown boutique, Dean Renwick Design Studio and Boutique also offers a great selection of ‘everyday attire.’ “We plan to bring in clothing from other designers across Saskatchewan including Yorkton, Weyburn, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw,” Renwick comments. Let’s not forget accessories! Accent your new outfit with hand painted scarves, luxurious Italian leather bags and hats by Sova. Add the perfect finishing touch with jewellery by the very talented Roxanne Brown.

Customized for You Renwick’s clientele can still count on the same top quality, personalized service that he and his crew have always offered. Working alongside his gifted group of local artisans, Renwick will create a look for you that identifies your uniqueness and make you feel like the true beauty that you are.

Rose Street. “It had been standing empty for several years. We thought, ‘well, it will be in proximity to VIP Men’s Wear and Deluxe Tailors, it would be a good combination on the street,’” explains McKay. Renwick agrees, adding that it’s a much more visible location with easier access to street parking.

Beautiful, comfortable, affordable; whether for a glamourous evening, a day at the office or relaxing at home; there’s always a reason to wear a Renwick.

The renovation of the property was designed by Nicole Kelly of Cite 360 Architecture and implemented by Ian Moats’ team at Innovation Renovation. “The jumping off point for the design was my logo. We went with an industrial chic look, or, as I like to call it, industrial glamour,” states Renwick.

All That Glitters

When it comes to choosing the perfect design for a one of a kind engagement ring, Olson Goldsmiths is the place. They desire to assist you to release the ring image carried in your imagination to the Goldsmith, who has the artistic talent to create the one of a kind piece to then be offered as your gift.

Dreams of fanning the flame of the fiancé’s love to unite with his for eternity, and to enrapture her heart in a symbol of devotion reflects what is uniquely him. The symbolic gift is a token of laying down the heart for the other, as his heart hopes to find its home in hers, hers in his. Rings are historically a symbol of giving love, honour and favour.

A Computer Aided Design CAD, system is used for developing a 3D image to enable the purchaser to visually assess the details before it is crafted. Many people come in with an eclectic vision, desiring a meshing of ideas and styles, envisioned together as the perfect piece of jewelry. Collaborating with artist owners, Scott and his wife, Lelis Olson, with the aid of Computer Aided Design, a draft of the design is enabled. Often the plastic composite is ready for a try on early in the process. One to two months is generally the timeline from start to finish. Olson was originally trained at the Gemological Institute of America. While he began his career in Jewellery Appraisal, he gradually transitioned to Jewellery Design. Olson states that Canadian Diamonds are the only diamonds in the world to

be tracked from harvest, throughout the refining and cutting process, to the consumer. Each Canadian Diamond is certified, authenticating its identification. Canadian diamond mines are in Saskatchewan, Yellowknife and northern Ontario. Olson Goldsmiths offers designs set in 10K, 14K and 18K, yellow or white gold, and platinum. Of interest in the shop, are the raw materials in the form they are mined from the earth. Raw precious gems peek out of the rock from which they are hewn, giving an impression

of the geological history that gems possess. Most gems are cut prior to importing. They not only create fabulous engagement rings and rings with assorted stones from around the world, but also pendants and earrings bearing precious stones. Choose your gems on sight to titillate your imagination during the jewellery making process. Olson Goldsmiths will delight you with brilliance in interpretation while creating the perfect piece of jewellery you have always dreamed of.

Capturing Memories WITH CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY BY FLORENCE HWANG PHOTOS HENRY GODNITZ

R

eflection 3D Technology can help you give your loved ones’ portraits that truly stand out — literally. Now anyone can replicate themselves or their loved ones in a smaller form thanks to modern day technology. Reflection 3D Technology specializes in 3D scanning and 3D printing services. Using the 360-degree photo booth, 3D images of individuals, couples, families or pets can be taken within two to three seconds; freezing a smaller version of yourself or your loved ones as a keepsake. “It’s a mini you. The likeness in our portraits is very realistic with all the details,” says general manager Rui Wang, who is part of

20  Sophisticated WOMAN REGINA

a team of three. The other two members are Tantan Xie, who is the founder and Hao Qian, who is the district manager. Reflection 3D Technology can help you preserve those special memories of your loved ones whether it’s graduations, anniversaries, corporate events, special visits or weddings. It’s also a great way to capture family portraits. Customers are raving about this new way to catch these precious moments in time. Wang says that Marius Odendaal loved the portraits so much that he purchased several 3D portraits for his mother and his kids, as well as his kids’ families. “He

STYLE

thinks it is a unique and special way to keep memories of his family members, and he will keep ordering the portraits for his grand kids in the future,” says Wang. These portraits serve as a fantastic way to vividly preserve memories. Winnia Zhang had a family 3D portrait taken when her parents came to visit from China. This portrait was a good way for her parents to remember the good times they had during the visit. One customer got a 3D portrait of himself taken and sent it to his mother, who lives in the United States. It was a Christmas gift his mother could cherish and remember him by.

Finally, this kind of portrait is a great way to capture those important benchmarks and stages of life in children’s growth and development. For example, Jaret Gillies got a 3D portrait taken of his three-year-old son. These portraits are hollow and quite delicate, but if you keep them in a cool and dry place and take care of them, they can last for years, notes Wang. Portraits are made up of sandstone, or gypsum, powder, an environmentally friendly and non-toxic material. The idea for 3D portraits came to Wang in 2014 when she visited a university in Helsinki, Finland. She loved the idea and wanted to bring the cutting-edge technology back to Regina.

andy Beug sat down in front of her television with her bowl of popcorn and glass of wine to watch the results of the American Presidential election. Like many of us she was shocked at the results. For countless women around the globe, Hillary Clinton’s loss seemed to be a personal loss that seemed hard to take. The next day Clinton gave a concession speech that took our eyes off the loss and on to moving forward. “And to all the little girls who are watching,” she encouraged, “never doubt that you are valuable and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.” “After hearing that speech, I decided it was time to quit crying in my chardonnay and do something constructive to help women move ahead,” recalls Beug. After doing some research, the three women concluded that one of the most effective ways to assist women in achieving their goals is to offer support with menstrual supplies. The ladies shared their findings with friends and associates from many backgrounds who responded with compassion and were eager to assist. As a result, Your Time: Women’s Empowerment Foundation was initiated.

A Few Facts “Every month women in North American spend $20 to $30 a month on supplies. It’s just something that we take for granted,” expresses Beug, “but for women in other parts of the world, spending that

HEALTH & WELLNESS

much money for pads or tampons can be a real hardship.” Vanderhooft agrees adding that the average unskilled labourer in Kenya earns about $1.50 (CDN) per day and the cost of one sanitary napkin is $1.00.” How do they cope? Vanderhooft explains that many women and girls are exchanging sex for menstrual supplies while others are resorting to using unhygienic rags and even leaves. When looking at statistics provided by organizations such as UNICEF and the World Bank, the women learned quickly how the lives and education of women and girls in developing countries are being affected by their inability to purchase menstrual products. “It’s upsetting to find out that, in Africa, one-in-ten school-aged girls are not attending school during their period because they don’t have tampons or

napkins,” states Peters. She goes on to share that girls are missing approximately 20 per cent of their school year. In northern Ethiopia, it’s noted that 58 per cent of girls drop out of school due to being humiliated by classmates when their clothes are stained with blood because of leakages or not having any supplies. “Not only that,” continues Peters, “but once it becomes evident that these young girls are having their period, men see them as being sexually mature and are harassed, married off young and even raped.”

Offering a Solution As a non-profit organization, Your Time: Women’s Empowerment Foundation strongly believes that the key to empowering women is through education. One of the ways that the educational and financial gaps between men and women can be bridged is by providing menstrual cups to women who can’t afford to buy supplies. This will

26  Sophisticated WOMAN REGINA

allow them the freedom to go to school without fear of being humiliated and harassed. All three ladies have expressed their gratitude to DivaCup for coming on board with Your Time: Women’s Empowerment Foundation. Lightweight, compact and easy to use, the DivaCup offers up to 12 hours of leakproof protection. Caring for the DivaCup is quite simple, just rinse after each change and disinfect in boiling water at the end of the menstrual cycle. Unlike pads and tampons, DivaCups are chemical free and don’t disturb the pH of the vagina.

Getting Off to a Great Start To start things off, the Your Time foundation hosted a cocktail party fundraiser on January 13th at Beug’s home. The event featured drinks and appetizers plus entertainment by the incredibly talented Casey Stone. The evening was a resounding success raising over $18,000 for the cause.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Proceeds from the night went to the foundation’s projects in Regina’s North Central Community, Northern Saskatchewan communities and areas in Colombia. For Your Time: Women’s Empowerment Foundation this is only the beginning. More fundraisers are being planned in Regina for this year including Your Time Saskatchewan, which will feature a wealth of the province’s highly talented performers.

No Limits! Beug is also excited to mention that the foundation has received at least 30 inquiries about starting up chapters in various parts of the country. A Colombian chapter of Your Time is also being discussed. “I don’t think there’s a limit to our growth. The more pods we have out there, the better we can keep our mission alive.” www.yourtimefoundation.com

veryone can learn, but knowing how to approach the process of learning and developing learning skills that can be applied in almost any situation is key to improved learning habits. Oxford Learning believes that teaching children how to learn and equipping them with learning skills is the most important lesson they will ever learn. Learning how to learn is a lasting skill students will use in every situation for the rest of their lives, both in and out of school. Oxford Learning teaches students thinking and learning skills and challenges them to engage their brains and approach

a new learning situation using a set of skills that they already have, but might not have known how to apply. Teaching thinking and learning skills helps students develop confidence in their learning abilities. This leads to increased confidence and school motivation. It can lead to great achievement when students begin to feel good about their abilities to learn. Motivation is a critical factor in school success, but not one that comes easily. Motivation is different for every student, and it comes from within. We help students eliminate the factors that contribute to loss of motivation - lack of comprehension, frustration and lack of self-confidence. We help students learn to love learning. A love of learning is the most important lesson that can be taught. When students

Patients Helping Patients

NON-PROFIT IMPROVING LIVES WITH A WIDE RANGE OF NATURAL, MEDICINAL CANNABIS-BASED PRODUCTS BY ROCKY NEUFELD PHOTOS NATHANIEL CARLOS LORENZO

F

or Kelly Csada, ‘Patients Helping Patients’ is not just a clever company slogan. It’s the foundation of her new business, Kelz, a Regina based medicinal cannabis dispensary. For over 27 years she has been a patient looking for the best possible way to overcome her Crohn’s disease. It got so bad that she was on disability for six years. Conventional medications didn’t seem to help, then Csada heard about medicinal cannabis. Initially, she had her suspicions and doubts, including the whole stigma about using marijuana. After several years of doing research and asking questions she finally was granted

30  Sophisticated WOMAN REGINA

access to medical cannabis, and hasn’t looked back since. “Cannabis has given me my quality of life back. All signs point to my Crohn’s being in remission. It changed my life, I wanted to make it easier for others to get the same benefit,” says Csada. Thus, Kelz opened for business in August of 2016. The non-profit corporation makes it easier for her to help people looking for answers, including putting on regular informational events featuring expert guest speakers. Csada can personally answer most the questions put to her by visitors. But she has also built up an extensive network of experts who can provide information as needed.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Kelly Csada, Director

Her favourite part of the business is helping people face-to-face. One especially memorable case was an elderly woman who was in the hospital with cancer, including two large tumors. A surgery had been scheduled for the lady. According to Csada, after several weeks of treatment with medical cannabis, both tumors were gone and the surgery was cancelled. “I love meeting and helping so many wonderful people. Some are noticeably shaking when they first come in the door,” explains Csada, “but after they get the amazing results from medical cannabis, you often end up seeing the same people come back in here with a spring in their step.” One of the visitors to Kelz was Tara Basi, a cook working in Regina. Her joint pain was making it very difficult to perform to her best ability in this physically demanding career, and she was also having trouble sleeping. But the medicinal cannabis looked after both problems. Karen Smith is a 57-year-old grandmother who has gone through years of dealing with fibromyalgia and the associated pain. Smith had always been diligent

about staying in shape, but her condition was making exercise impossibly painful. Then after a few weeks of medicinal cannabis the pain was greatly reduced and her mobility had improved. She was soon back to her favourite activity of playing with her grandchildren. Another happy patient is local carpenter Matt Leir. A couple of years ago, he broke his back in a snowmobiling accident. Csada helped Leir get approval

for medical cannabis. He’s extremely pleased with the results. “It relieved my pain from a nine down to about a four and it’s allowed me to work and think clearly without being impaired.” Csada strongly encourages anyone with any level of interest in medicinal cannabis to keep a close eye on their website, Facebook and other social media for upcoming informational events sponsored by Kelz.

he first Wellness Pharmacy, located at 1713 Badham Blvd in Canterbury Park, opened its doors four years ago and has since expanded to include two more locations to serve Regina’s growing need for specialized pharmacy services. Their patient-focused care is second to none, as Wellness Pharmacy staff bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise in many areas of health and wellness. This includes diabetes education, geriatric medicine, respiratory education, anti-coagulation therapy, cardiovascular health and weight-loss coaching featuring Ideal Protein products and supplements. “We go beyond the dispensary,” says Christie Matechuk, Pharmacy Manager at Wellness Pharmacy. “We are not limited to working within the four walls of our pharmacy and are proud to offer a unique experience for our patients.” Medication assessments, whether they are in-home or at the pharmacy, are free of charge along with many consultations available with their healthcare professionals. If patients require a medication review and are unable to come to the pharmacy, Matechuk says they are more than happy to go into their home and provide this service to meet the patient’s comfort. “A lot of things can be done over the phone, but sometimes you don’t get the full picture of someone’s health unless you go in to that patient’s home,” she states. Wellness Pharmacy’s patient-focused approach allows patients to seek improvements in their overall health and wellness, including preventative measures to keep individuals from

getting sick in the first place. “We want to see you before you get sick, so you can achieve your maximum health potential.” Matechuk, who is a certified diabetes educator, knows the importance of preventative therapy, especially when looking at pre-diabetic and existing diabetic populations. Maintaining optimal weight can assist in slowing the progression of diabetes, limiting long term complications and in some cases, can decrease onset of this disease. “Someone who is diabetic might be able to wean off certain medications entirely by engaging with our team to help them achieve optimal diet and weight control,” says Matechuk. Improvements in health are not only achieved using medications, but can be obtained using supportive medical aids including compression therapy. The entire staff at Wellness Pharmacy are Sigvaris certified and will custom fit your graduated compression stockings to your exact need, promoting healthy circulation and preventing long term complications. Any patient can benefit from compression products, especially those who stand for long periods of time, pregnant women, athletes, those recovering from surgery, diabetics, or anyone suffering from leg swelling. Matechuk says she stands by this product and wears them every day. All patients, regardless of age, health status or location can benefit from the advanced clinical services at Wellness Pharmacy. “We take a personal interest in

every single person who walks through the door. That patient becomes not only our professional responsibility, but becomes part of our family,” says Matechuk.

W

hen it comes to trend setting Essence Organic Hair & Day Spa has always been ahead of

the crowd.

Essence realized the benefits of going organic long before it was commonly known. What we put on our bodies is absorbed into our skin and into our systems, so we should be mindful about the choices we make. Essence uses only the finest products, free of unhealthy preservatives, parabens and any other harmful ingredients. All products carried by them have all been carefully selected keeping in mind both superior results and the health of their guests. Essence is proud to provide treatments that are custom formulated to the needs and senses of their clients. Essence Organic Hair & Day Spa is the original carrier of the award-winning Eminence Organic Skin Care. The line offers an organic option in skin care that can target any skin care issues from anti-

aging to acne prone skin. The lines wide variety of products leaves no skin concern without a solution. “It’s a pleasure to be in one of the most historic hotels in the Queen City,” states owner, Leah Jordan about being situated in the newly renovated, luxurious Hotel Saskatchewan. Although Essence may be one of the largest and most established day spas in Regina in a very prestigious location, Jordan notes that Essence’s prices are not out of reach. “We are luxurious, but it’s an affordable luxury. People deserve to have a great high end service without an out of reach price tag attached. People deserve that. They work hard. If they are going to spend their money on a spa service, we want it to be the best it can be.” A strong believer in paying kindness forward, Jordan subscribes to the ‘look good, feel good, do good’ school of thought. Essence is pleased to launch two new initiatives to give back to clients and those who work so hard in the community.

Essence is a full-service spa that offers a great variety of ways to do just that such as manicures, pedicures and massages. They also feature a variety of specialized services including the sculpture manicure and the organic apricot warm stone massage. While Essence was the first to offer spa services using organic products, they’re also the first salon in Regina to offer curlyhaired women the DevaCut experience.

She responded by travelling to the DevaCurl Training Academy in New York to obtain training and become the first certified Deva architect master stylist in Regina. DevaCurl products treat the needs of curly hair and are paired with a unique, revolutionary cutting system that eliminates the common complaints that curly-haired clients express such as the incredible shrinking haircut, the triangle head, crispy crunchy curls and too much frizz.

The caregivers program focuses on those working caretaking professions such as nurses or caring for people with special needs. Program members always receive 20 per cent off their services at Essence. “We believe there are people out there that spend much of their time and money taking care of others who need it instead of treating themselves. These people are special members of our society and deserve to be to treated,” comments Jordan.

Guests turned out to help donate to SOFIA House, which strives to provide comprehensive services to families who have experienced domestic violence. Guests arrived to a red martini reception in the lobby, delicious appetizers and the sounds of local singer and songwriter Scott Pettigrew. A large etched ice sculpture with The Lady in Red logo lit up the centre of the room. Spectators watched as Jason Robins painted and created a beautiful piece that was later auctioned off. Photos on the red carpet captured the guests’ gorgeous red dresses and the gentlemen’s finest with the brand of the event in the background. Chrisinda Tkatch is Mrs. Canada Globe 2017. She is the organizer of the second annual event. “Originally I organized the gala when I was Ms. Regina Globe 2015 competing for Mrs. Canada Globe. I am a spokeswoman for the WIN foundation (Women in Need) when it comes to women’s and children’s needs in violent situations in Regina, SOFIA House is the best fit,” says Tkatch. The Lady in Red gala has raised close to $40,000 for SOFIA house. She was nominated as Ms. Canada Globe 2016. Later competed in China December 2016 for the world title placing 10th overall. Tkatch felt that it was more challenging to get sponsorships for this year’s Lady in Red gala. Despite the tough economic times, she still felt positive about it. She notes that the title sponsor again was MAACO collision repair and auto Painting. She is pleased with the responses she’s received from the guests and sponsors. “I have had people calling and sending me messages that they enjoyed it and look forward to next year. I had quite a few sponsors who said they’ll support it next year which is really exciting to see,” Tkatch says. Once the expenses are covered, the rest of the funds go directly towards SOFIA House. The delegates that participate in the Mrs. Globe are very active in their communities helping in various ways. “I planned numerous events throughout the year but The Lady in Red Gala I am most proud of,” she says. She is appreciative of the help she received from her committee, Sponsors and attendees of THE LADY IN RED-2017.

This marks the second year that the Mrs. Canada Globe (MCG) pageant has been held in our fair city. The preliminaries took place March 17th during the What Women Want event at the Conexus Arts Centre with finals located in the ballroom of the Double Tree by Hilton on March 18th.

M

CG is open to women across Canada who are 26 years old and over. Beautiful, healthy women of all backgrounds and sizes, who display grace and confidence, are welcome to take part. To enter the pageant, ladies can send in an application on the website. Applications are then collected and an interview process takes place by Skype. After the interviews are completed, delegates are selected for the competition.

at the personality and how well she communicates. That’s why we interview and have them answer questions.” Castle adds that the judges are looking for that ‘it’ factor. What is it about her that catches the eye of everyone in the room?

This year, 16 remarkable delegated from across Canada vied for the opportunity to be crowned Mrs. Canada Globe 2017. After the swimsuit and evening competition part of the evening, 10 finalists were chosen. Each finalist was asked to answer one of three questions for which they had previously prepared and one bonus question.

This year, a couple of new crowns were handed out. Mrs. Eastern Canada, Lynn Gauvreau was crowned Delegate’s Choice. Castle explains that all of the delegates were asked to vote for the lady they would most like to see win the title. Another new award was given to Sue Connors, Mrs. Western Canada, who was crowned Mrs. Canada Globe Classic. “The winner of this title will go on to Las Vegas as a delegate in the Mrs. Globe Classic which is a pageant for women over the age of 50,” states Castle.

The event was organized by two-time MCG pageant title holder, Kimberly Castle. For Castle, this is a labour of love and she beams with enthusiasm as she talks about the planning of the event. “It’s a lot of hard work,” she says, “but it’s a great way to empower women and help them to feel good about themselves.” She goes on to add that some ‘nay-sayers’ may comment that pageants are outdate, exploitive or inappropriate but the MCG pageant is really about confidence. “Yes, we have a swimsuit competition, but it’s really about the delegate’s level of confidence as she walks down the runway wearing it. The judges also look

The winner of the title will get to go on to China to compete in the Ms. Globe pageant. It’s truly a life changing experience that Mrs. Canada Globe will not forget.

Special thanks go out to What Women Want, the Regina Hotel Association and Eye Inspire Events for their partnership and vision. “Without them, this pageant wouldn’t have happened,” says Castle. The MCG pageant has a very strong focus on charity. The ladies are required to host at least one charitable fundraising event every year that they hold their titles. A People’s Choice Award is presented to the delegate who raises the most money for charity. Supporters of a specific

delegate will donate $10 per vote for their favourite lady. The woman with the most votes wins the award. This year’s winner was Ms. Saskatoon Globe, Karen Gaudry. The funds that the delegates have raised over the year are donated directly to Sophia House. This year, over $50,000 was raised through the MCG pageant for the organization. The charitable nature of the pageant carries on through to the Ms. Globe pageant which is a strong supporter of the WIN Foundation (Women in Need Foundation). The evening ended on a thrilling note with the crowning of Ms. Saskatchewan Globe, Holly Weselowski as Mrs. Canada Globe 2017. There was plenty of happy tears on stage as she was crowned by Mrs. Canada Globe 2016, Chrisinda Tkatch. For Weselowski the excitement is only just beginning as she busily prepares to represent Canada in the Mrs. Globe pageant this fall. The very best of luck! www.mrscanadaglobe.com

RICHARDSON LIGHTING:

Lighting the Way for 50 Years BY TOBIE HAINSTOCK

Diamond Pendents by Matted, Ripplinger Homes

T

he year 1967 was a landmark year for many of us as Canada celebrated her 100th birthday but it was particularly significant for Ernie Richardson. The world champion curler from Stoughton, Saskatchewan took on a new business venture that would change the way people in the province think about lighting fixtures and design. After opening a store at 1431 Scarth Street, Ernie’s passion and dedication for his business was very evident. This was more than a job, more than a retail business, this was a means to reach

out to customers and help them get the best possible product for their homes. Because of this dedication to service and quality, Richardson Lighting’s reputation for excellence grew. As the business became more popular, the need for a bigger facility was apparent. In 1973, Ernie partnered with Morley Gusway, owner of Regina Rent It Centre and the store moved to a much larger location at 2460 7th Avenue. The new store took up half of the 15,000-square foot building which included 1,000 square feet of showroom space.

HOUSE & HOME

Nine years after moving to their second location, the business moved to its present address of 2101 7th Avenue. This piece of property had once been a skating rink. The land caught Ernie’s eye as being a good location for Richardson Lighting to serve patrons for decades to come. Richardson Lighting occupies the 12,000-square foot building which includes a stunning 4,000-square foot showroom.

Moving in to Saskatoon In April, 1979, Richardson House of Fixtures opened their Saskatoon location.

the largest in Saskatchewan and many will say it is one of the nicest showrooms in western Canada.

The people of Saskatoon soon grew to appreciate the friendly, honest ways of the staff at Richardson’s and by May, 1984, it was time to move to a larger location on 47th Street. The business purchased Hilite Lighting on 8th Street in 1989 to expand their coverage of the Saskatoon area.

A New Identity

Both stores were busily offering high quality products and services to customers until June, 2000 when they amalgamated to the newly expanded 47th Street facility. Featuring 14,000 square feet which included 6,000 square feet of showroom; the Saskatoon store is

Continued Commitment to Quality

With so much growth going on and a new millennium dawning, it was decided that a name change was needed. Richardson House of Fixtures became Richardson Lighting to give a better reflection of who the business is and what they do.

“It has been the outstanding effort and dedication of the partners and staff, both past and present, and the loyalty of three

generations of customers that is the reason for our success and why we are able to celebrate this golden jubilee,” says Don Richardson. As they forge ahead, the business will continue to evolve but you can count on the old-fashioned philosophies, honest prices, high quality product and impeccable service that Richardson Lighting has always been known for.

CREATING YOUR

Beautiful

BOUDOIR!

fter the honeymoon, keep the home fires burning with your very own romantic retreat! Sophisticated Woman has found some simple ways to turn your bedroom into a relaxing and sensual oasis.

Keep it Dust Free Of course, there’s nothing more unromantic and unsettling than a dusty room. It’s also unhealthy, dust can trigger allergies which in turn can prevent you from gaining a restful sleep. Dust mites, which are microscopic pests that live in soft surfaces like bedding, have a similar effect, especially for people who suffer from asthma.

Keep the Bedroom for Relaxing The best bedrooms are NOT multi-tasking centers. Their purpose is solely for resting and relaxing. Avoid using your beautiful boudoir as an office space, work out area or play room. Keep things minimal in the bedroom. If space is limited, section off untidy areas or work spaces with a stylish decorative screen or something else that will hide the distractions.

Lose the Clutter Another barrier to creating the perfect boudoir is clutter. Clutter stands in the way of creating a calming bedroom refuge. Looking for some storage? Get creative! Find elegant antique chests or trunks that appeal to the décor of the room and serve a functional purpose. If that’s not your style, look for a chic ottoman to store additional bedding, clothing and other items that you want out of sight. For smaller belongings storage boxes offer a great solution as items can be tidied away. Boxes featuring lovely patterns are even pretty enough to leave out on display.

Block Outside Elements The presence of light, no matter how dim, can alter your natural sleep patterns and cause a less soporific sleep. The best way to prevent this is to block streetlights and other sources of illumination with blackout blinds. For decorative purposes, visit a blind and window treatment store for blackout roller blinds made from thicker materials. You can find a wide range of colours, styles and sizes. To create a look that’s a bit more boudoir, use a combination of blinds and fashionable curtains to give a soft, fully-dressed look which still offers additional light filtration when needed. Tie them back to create a gathered effect that looks soft and stylish.

Keep your bedroom clean by dusting surfaces, washing bedding frequently and vacuuming regularly. It’s also a good idea to vacuum the surface of your mattress occasionally. For allergy sufferers, look for anti-allergy bedding including mattress toppers, quilts, mattress protectors and pillow protectors with a choice of natural or synthetic fillings.

A Soft, Sensual Ambience Set the mood in your boudoir with luxurious soft lighting. A beautiful chandelier style lampshade with crystals will create instant glamour that will look great in any style bedroom. If that’s not your style, try a lovely featured lampshade to create that special mood.

A Private Escape After a long day, it’s important to unwind in together. Having a private corner for just the two of you will keep your intimacy flourishing.

RAY MAH DILAWRI BMW 1919 1st Avenue, Regina | C: 306.737.1996 | [email protected]

I have worked with Ray on my last few vehicles and I could not be more pleased with his excellent customer service. Ray takes the time to understand my needs and purchasing style and then caters to those needs in a professional and effective manner. He bends over backwards to help me with what I need and I appreciate is attentiveness. It is Ray that keeps me coming back to the dealership! –Shelly Lipon

From the moment I walked into the dealership, I was treated like I was a long-time friend. Ray approached me and made me feel welcome. Not once did I feel like I was being ‘sold’. Through our conversations, Ray found me exactly what I was looking for without any pressure of obnoxious sales pitch. I felt as though my friend was helping me choose exactly what I wanted. I have now been a proud owner of a Mini Cooper for 2 years. –Christena Stathnann, Business Owner

Knowing Ray for a number of years and his commitment to his clients, he was one of the key factors in my decision to purchase my BMW. Starting day one when I purchased my car and up to now he continues to be very thorough, puts me at ease if I have any questions and overall genuinely cares about his clients. I would not hesitate to recommend Ray if you are considering buying a BMW. I look forward to continuing being a customer of BMW and a client of Ray’s for years to come. –Brandy Austin, IT Consultant

I have had the pleasure of purchasing two vehicles from BMW Regina, and both times have been great. A special thank you to Ray for a pressure-free experience, for his knowledge of the product, and for always answering my questions and concerns in a professional manner. Outstanding customer service! –Amy Nobert, Self Employed

Ray went above and beyond to make sure I purchased the vehicle that was best suited for me. Ray gave me suggestions and his honest advice, but was in no way pushy, what-so-ever. The most important thing for me was that Ray respected me (a woman) as the buyer despite the fact that my husband was there. Ray focused solely on what my needs and wants were in order to find a vehicle that I was most comfortable with and not one my husband wanted. –Dezarae Senft, Lawyer

I am a firm believer that ‘excellence is found in the details’. This statement sums up why I have purchased my last three vehicles from Dilawri BMW. The striking presence paired with incredible power alone, could sell these vehicles, yet this is not the key to my reason for being a repeat buyer. I am a loyal BMW customer because of the ‘golden’ service. It is a standard of excellence that I value and consider integral to my investment. Ray Mah, my Dilawri BMW sales expert spent hours with me as I picked every feature in my current X6. He learned about me as a buyer to ensure that each detail was matched to both my standards and my lifestyle. I trusted Ray throughout the process and always felt like he was working with me. He continues to wow me with his loyalty and capacity to carry off the iconic luxury of this brand. Ray’s level of attention did not stop following my purchase. Every time I drop my vehicle off, I know it is coming back to me sparkling clean that that there will be a fun ‘new ride’ waiting for me to drive. Every detail is taken care of before I arrive! I often refer to Ray Mah’s service as ‘white-glove’ service. Ray and the BMW team have become part of our circle. They keep my ‘girl’ shining and me smiling with each vehicle experience! Thank-you Ray - your penchant to exemplify this brand with excellence is something I have come to value and respect! –Lori Daelick, Principal Regina Public Schools

rnest Hemingway was once asked, “How did you go broke?” His reply “Slowly, then all at once.”

We have a debt based society and our metaphorical credit cards are about to get cut up. Suppose that Bob is $1,000,000 in debt and his income doesn’t cover expenses. If he borrowed

another $200,000, he could continue to operate as usual until he burns through this additional debt at which time he’d need another $200,000. Bob can’t solve his debt problem with more debt. Bob resembles most of today’s ‘wealthy’ nations. The US is colossally in debt. Now Trump wants to reduce government income and increase spending. As the US is already broke, the only way they can raise the money would be by increasing debt. The largest buyer of U.S. debt (bonds) on the planet had been China, who is now selling5. To attract more buyers, the US will need to offer higher interest rates. Low interest rates mean high bond prices. As of September 2015, we were at the lowest interest rates in history6 with many bonds so overpriced they

provided a negative return. By early August 2016, interest rates went even lower globally with 13.4 trillion 10 in negative returning bonds. This means the highest bond prices ever, thus, a bond super-bubble. Before the end of 2016, the bond prices began to move lower and interest rates rose. 10 Currently, almost all money is managed by diversifying your risk away with bonds, however the strategy ignores that we are in a bond super bubble. Bonds have been dropping since the first week of July13 (and interest rates rise) as they come off the highest prices in 5000 years 6. Interest rates moved higher leading up to 2000 and 2008, and we know how that ended6. It’s widely known that extremely low monthly payments due to record low

interest rates, contribute to bubbles in real estate and the stock market. This is because many loans are taken for amounts otherwise not possible with higher rates. Also, low rates in bank savings accounts drive money to higher risk assets like real estate and stock market to make more return. The damage done by holding rates at record lows for more than seven years will be seen soon as the bubble is about to pop7. With interest rates already starting to climb11, all bubbles are on borrowed time12. I can help you protect yourself and profit. My clients’ largest current holding nearly doubled last year and continues to perform strong in 201714. Please contact me to discover how you can be protected and profit as this debt bubble pops.

Breaking The Mould! WOMEN IN NON-TRADITIONAL WORKPLACES BY TOBIE HAINSTOCK

T

hose words of wisdom were passed on to me by my dad, one of the greatest supporters of women’s rights and equality that I’ve ever known. He encouraged me to seek out the occupation that I found most gratifying and was supportive when, for a short time before writing and editing, I worked as a partsperson and even as a welder. Although doors are opening for women in non-traditional occupations, growth has not changed a lot over the years. According to Jessica Baldwin, Provincial Facilitator for Women in Trades and Technology at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, there are still barriers to women getting into non-traditional workplaces but the biggest is the lack of exposure and education. The biggest influences in a young woman’s life are her parents, teachers and guidance counsellors. By educating the girls and those closest to them about these occupations and what they offer, they will be able to make an informed decision about their future. Post secondary schools such as Saskatchewan Polytechnic are developing programs such as GETT Summer Camps and Mind Over Metal Camps that reach out to girls grades six to eight to encourage them to look at trades as realistic career options.

as she saw the multiple opportunities that are available here in Saskatchewan. “Working in the mining industry has allowed me to work for a relatively large and well respected company within a respected industry and that was important to me,” says Theriault. She adds that the unique longevity of potash mining was also an attractive feature for her. Although stats from the Mining Industry Human Resources Council indicate that women make up only 14 per cent of the mining workforce, Theriault is pleased to comment that companies like Mosaic are working to change those numbers. “It’s all about diversity. We have incentives for employee referral bonuses as well as co-op and internship programs. These are the things that raise awareness that Mosaic is an employer of choice.”

Meanwhile, there are employers who hold job fairs and recruitment campaigns that reach out to women specifically. Despite the challenges and hurdles, women are steadily breaking through the stereotypical moulds that we’ve been trapped in for so long. Sophisticated Woman Magazine is pleased to introduce to you a group of strong women who are enjoying their careers of choice.

KARLA FORRESTER Machinist/Millwright, Yara Belle Plaine When Karla Forrester was in high school, she thought it would be interesting to learning machining. “I grew up on a farm so I already new what it was,” she recalls. As she took the class, Forrester found that, not only was she a good machinist, she liked it as well. It was at that point that Forrester enrolled in the pre-employment program available at SIAST. “That’s a one year course that gives you your first two years toward your journeyman certificate. From there you can go on to get a job and start getting the apprenticeship you need for your trade,” she explains.

As she worked as a machinist doors opened for her to become a millwright. Today, Forrester holds journeyman certificates in both fields and is happily employed at Yara Belle Plaine.

In addition to those items, Theriault points out that Mosaic (one of Canada’s top 100 employers) is conscience of the importance of a work/life balance by offering part time and flex hours, schedule modifications at all job sites, EDO’s and EFO’s, job sharing and telecommuting. After almost 19 years in the mining industry, Theriault has had no regrets she encourages other women to, “Go for it!”

Forrester never really gave the idea of working in a predominantly male profession much consideration. “Maybe because I was so young at the time, but I never really thought of it as something that could hinder. Now, I’ve been doing it for so long that I sort of forget that I’m the only girl.” Forrester adds that she finds her work very fulfilling on many levels by using several different skills such as problemsolving and math. “It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for something both challenging and satisfying then you should definitely try it.”

JESSICA THERIAULT Engineer, Mosaic As the first female Chair of the Saskatchewan Mining Association; Jessica Theriault has managed to break a few moulds of her own. Starting out as an engineer in the oil and gas sector, Theriault moved into the mining industry

Although all three ladies are members of the Capital GMC sales team, there are females working in all aspects of the business. “We have women in every department, from the lube bay to accounting,” notes Herauf. Things have progressed since Larson started 18 years ago, she recalls getting some surprised looks from customers in the beginning. Those looks eventually faded and it became evident that both female and male customers appreciated women salespeople. In 2007, Capital started an ‘all girls’ sales team to bring more women into the industry and offer customers a choice.

Single mom Terri Kayter didn’t let her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), hold her back. “I wanted to prove to myself that having MS isn’t going to slow me down,” she comments, “so I got my class one license and I drove truck.”

“If you’re looking for a career where the days go by so fast and at the end of the day you feel so exhausted but so fulfilled, then this is the place for you,” expressed Denise Herauf, Internet Sales Manager at Capital GMC. New Car Sales Manager, Sharon Larson agrees adding that she finds working in automotive sales to be a lot of fun and very rewarding. “Buying a car is an exciting event in someone’s life and it’s a thrill for us to be a part of that,” adds Product Specialist Carey Umpherville.

Kayter was a truck driver for about eight years and enjoyed it but found that being on the road so much really took a toll on family life. It was then that a family friend suggested that she come to Saskatchewan to apply at what is now Evraz. “I drove from BC for the job interview and they said, ‘we’ll call you in a week.’ I wasn’t even out of Regina 20 minutes when they called me and asked me if I could start the following Monday.”

Although women are making a lot of headway in the industry, there is still a stereotype. “I’ll be at a store or something and someone will comment about my Capital jacket and just assume I work in the office,” chuckles Herauf, “I just smile and hand them my card.” The ladies point out that they are proud to work for a caring employer who offers career opportunities to everyone equally. “It’s great to work in a place that allows you to move into so many different roles,” comments Larson.

After more than seven years as a steel worker, Kayter has established herself in her workplace. It was tough at first and she’s quick to say that it’s not a job for everyone but at the end of the day, she finds her work very satisfying. “I’ve had some great bosses over the years who have treated me well and I really appreciate their support. Now it’s just like one big family. I even met my husband on the job,” she grins. Working at Evraz has also allowed Kayter to prove to herself and to others that she can do anything she sets her mind to and that’s a great feeling!

Herauf notes that customers like having the choice. “When I’m standing there with three guys, most of the time, the customer will walk up to me,” she states with a grin.

PAVING THE WAY FOR

WOMEN IN

CONSTRUCTION BY TOBIE HAINSTOCK PHOTOS NATHANIEL CARLO LORENZO AND ALLAN BARILLA

et’s face it, when thinking about people working in heavy construction, most of us have a certain image in mind. Shantel Lipp and Mary Panteluk don’t really seem to fit what we imagine in our stereotypical minds. Not only are Lipp and Panteluk pioneers, breaking into a predominately male industry, they are very passionate about what they do.

Shantel Lipp It takes a certain amount of moxy to be the only female president of a heavy construction association in Canada; and Lipp has it! Her ‘go get ‘em’ attitude is one of the key features that landed her the position of President of the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association (SHCA) over eight years ago. After a lengthy career working in municipal government at the City of Regina and Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA), Lipp was approached by a recruiter about a relatively new role that the SHCA had created. The job description peaked Lipp’s interest. “It was very similar to what I was doing at SUMA but allowed me to take on more responsibility. So, I applied.” The interview process was a bit daunting as the petite 5’2” Lipp sat across a panel of four large males but she was offered the position. The first year was challenging. Lipp and the board members had many meetings to do what they could to make the association more efficient. From those meetings and discussions grew a great working relationship. “I’ve always been treated with a great deal of respect.” According to Lipp, being a woman in construction can be both challenging and rewarding. She acknowledges the growing number of women who are working out on projects with the men. It doesn’t stop there, many of the contractors in heavy construction are family owned businesses. “The success of this industry relies heavily on the women who are supporting the contracting businesses by managing the books as well as the human resource and safety operations work needed to stay on top of things,” she comments. Lipp explains that Saskatchewan Women in Heavy Construction (SWIHC) is an organization that offers peer support to women

involved in the family business within the heavy construction industry. It also educates others about women who are breaking through the glass ceiling by working in a predominantly male industry.

Mary Panteluk Another trailblazer in the heavy construction field is Mary Panteluk of Kelly Panteluk Construction Ltd. Growing up, she was mentored by women who were prime examples of strong female leaders. She speaks proudly of her mother and grandmother who managed the financial requirements within the business and of her aunt who owned a flying school in Saskatoon. Panteluk comments that she was always encouraged to pursue the career of her choice in the industry of her choice. However, after graduating from Edwards School of Business in 2012, she chose the opportunity to work alongside her parents. With a background in Human Resources and Marketing, Panteluk put the company online, led international recruitment

missions, incorporated behavioural based tools to aid in recruitment and team building, and is currently focused on promoting the family business as an equal opportunity employer. “This industry can open the doors for people of all backgrounds,” she comments, “it’s ideal for someone with little or no experience.” Employees are able to get practical experience by working in a ‘hands-on’ environment. They are also free to move up into roles with increased responsibility. “Heavy construction is great for those who appreciate being part of something bigger than themselves and there’s always a great deal of satisfaction seeing the end result.” For most, mutual respect is highly encouraged and is supported by policy among employers in the industry. “Gender should not hinder your opportunity and growth,” says Panteluk. She adds that women in heavy construction have the opportunity to attain equal wages based on their skills and abilities. Even though there is a lot of openmindedness about a diverse work

environment, there is also room for improvement. As Saskatchewan’s first female board member in the heavy civil construction industry, Panteluk sees the SHCA as a solid platform for implementing policy changes. “It allows me to get my voice out there so that I can contribute and make improvements within the industry as a whole.”

Who is the SHCA? Formerly known as the Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association of Saskatchewan, the SHCA was formed in 1919 as a local chapter of the Canadian Construction Association. In 1956, the group was renamed and reformatted to the Saskatchewan Roadbuilders Association. Today, the SHCA remains a founding member of the Western Canadian Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association and has representation on the Civil Infrastructure Council of the Canadian Construction Association. The organization is also currently on the board of the Western Canadian Roadbuilders.

The purpose of the SHCA is to provides the its over 200 members the support they need to enhance their growth and maintain success in the industry. “We give our members profile, presence and impact on the lobby front and help them conduct their business by keeping them up to date with tenders, regulations and changes in technology,” says Lipp. The SHCA also offers the members a voice when it comes to safety issues and various regulation or legislation changes. One area in which the association is busily working is the enforcement of the Carbon Tax. Although the SHCA is happy to do whatever they can to reduce emissions, the technology needed is still in the developing stages. “There are also

several unknowns out there that need to answered,” comments Lipp, “for example, how is this tax going to be administered?” She adds that the financial impact on the economy will be huge at this point. The SHCA is working with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), and others to appeal to the federal government on this matter. Members of the SHCA are working on some of the largest construction projects in western Canada such as the White City/Pilot Butte Bypass and the CP Line Relocation project.

A Great Place Work No matter what your background is, if you get a thrill out of being part of something huge, have a strong work ethic and get very passionate about what you do; then the construction industry is ideal. “I get a lot of satisfaction out of knowing that we are contributing to infrastructure that people will be using for generations,” says Panteluk. Lipp agrees and adds, “This is the most rewarding job I’ve had.”

Goruick explains that establishing a strong safety culture in the workplace necessitates a long-term commitment which also means maintaining that culture once it’s in place. “That goes for everyone in all levels of the organization. The management should also live it and breathe it as well. The workers won’t take it seriously if their leaders don’t.” Working for a reputable company such as Westridge is a bonus. Goruick speaks very highly of her employer and is pleased to relay that the business has recently been the recipient of the SCSA’s Corporate Leadership in Safety Award. “To me, that affirms that as a company, we’ve been successfully prioritizing safety in our daily operations.”

he construction industry has changed a lot over the years,” says Collin Pullar, president of the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA), “safety is something people see as a serious asset.” He adds that the increased demand for skilled workers means an increased need for people trained in safety. As more women enter the trades, there is an increase in female workers who

are interested in a career in safety. Pullar notes that the safety programs offered by the SCSA open doors within the industry. “These programs really enhance the participants’ skillset and develop their ability to be leaders in the field.” One such leader is Milayna Goruick, safety coordinator at Westridge Construction. Trained through the SCSA, Goruick has achieved her National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation.

Since 2004, Westridge has also been involved in the SCSA’s Certificate of Recognition (COR®) Program. COR® verifies that a company has a fully implemented health and safety program that meets national standards in order to identify weaknesses that can lead to costly workplace injuries and incidents. Her own personal dedication to her career is evident as Goruick speaks passionately about how rewarding her career is. “Safety is about helping people on a daily basis. It’s real world implications, real world improvements; visible changes that are being made.” Those are the changes that ensure that her coworkers make it home to their families safe everyday.
