Adding search engines and social media sites is very easy. Once you have right clicked on your term, scroll to the bottom and select options. This will bring you to 29 pre-programmed search engines and social media sites. You can also add additional sites by clicking on the plus sign in the upper right corner of your search URL list. In order to add to sites, you will have to customize each URL.

TwitJobSearch – See Who’s Posting on Twitter! TwitJobSearch is the Twitter Job Search Engine.

From the main page, we can immediately see who else is posting their jobs to Twitter.

http://www.twitjobsearch.com/

Additonally, this site has an “advanced” search feature to narrow our results to specific words or phrases or even by specific users. We can even check to see if our own job postings on Twitter and coming back.

TwitJobSearch allows us to subscribe to the RSS feed of this search to continue to follow and see who else is hiring and it will also map the job locations.

Are you posting jobs to Twitter? If so, you should check out this tool to see how optimized your Job Tweets really are. AIRS Sourcing Report

Simple Search in Google Yields Robust Results for Recruiters

G

oogle engineers have been as busy as Santa’s elves the last few months, making changes to layouts and products for the purpose of improving and enhancing the search experience. One recent alteration has proven effective as it produces an instant map and list of addresses and phone numbers on the initial results page. Take a look at what the simple search of the keyword nursing at Google’s general search box produces now. A map appears on the right side of the page pinpointing local addresses of nurses according to the location set in a searcher's "preferences". This accompanies a list of those same nurses in the middle of the page that include phone numbers and street addresses. What a great list! Up until December 1st of this year, similar results would have required a couple of steps with the search originating in Google Maps.

Similar results appear when searching for the word attorney. AIRS Sourcing Report

Simple Search in Google continued

Notice that the simpler the search, the more likely the mapped and location information will appear in the results. Just below are results for the word civil and the word engineer.

NOTE: Conducting a search on the exact phrase “civil engineer” produces a results page where the mapped results and location and phone number do not appear.

Target Geography with Boolean Specific to Social Media Sites

E

ach social media site has their own nuances about how they display the physical location of a candidate. Some sites, like LinkedIn, have a finite list of geographic locations in the world … and accordingly each person is assigned a location based on the postal code in their profile.

AIRS PowerBreak Series

Other sites, like Twitter, allow an individual to input literally anything they want in the location field … just a city, just a state or even worse (for recruiters) to leave the field blank.

The AIRS monthly PowerBreak Series features a free, 30 minute topic specific session. December 2011: Crafting an Effective Social Media Policy December’s class will be focused on social media’s hottest topics in the world of human resources and recruiting. The more finite the list of geographic options, the easier it is for a recruiter to construct a search string – because a cardinal rule of Boolean search is that we can only search for keywords which are included in the indexed result (not words that we wish we there). So if the list of keyword options is limited, the number of search strings needed to locate candidates living in those areas is limited. Even with a finite list of options, however, some sites are very difficult to search. Xing is one such social media site. Because the site originated in Germany, its geography reference format is city / country (no mention of state, as there is no such thing in Germany.)

So, how do we use our knowledge of Boolean to search for candidates within a commutable distance from Kalamazoo, MI on Xing? We can’t search for (mi OR michigan) because Xing doesn’t reference states. We could search for the 10 zip codes specific to Kalamazoo, but aren’t there people living outside of Kalamazoo who would happily commute for our job opening that wouldn’t be found with that search? Of course, we want to target them too. For Kalamazoo we could search for the 20 cities within 15 miles of Kalamazoo, but again we are probably losing viable candidates by limiting our search to these 20 cities. And within a 15 mile circle of more populated locations we wouldn’t want to deal with a much greater number of cities to search on. So what to do?

Target Geography continued We use the Number Range command at Google! The Number Range allows us to search a range of numbers from low to high. So our first step is to determine the range of zip codes within a specific distance from Kalamazoo (zip code 49001). We can do that at http://www.zip-codes.com/zip-code-radius-finder.asp locating zip codes within a 5 to 30 mile radius. A search for 30 miles from 49001 yields 73 zip codes, beginning with 49001 and ending with 49450.

SEARCH STRING: site:xing.com 49001..49450 But wait, that isn’t bringing back only candidates from the part of Michigan we seek. So let’s add another keyword phrase to improve our search results. site:xing.com 49001..49450 “united states” These are great results now! By remembering the cardinal rule that we can only search for keywords indexed in the result and by adding “united states” to our search we have been able to target the candidates who are living in the specific region of Michigan we are targeting. The use of the Number Range command makes Xing a very viable site for any search purposes going forward. www.airsdirectory.com
