Bing’s New Social Interface

S

ince its inception three years ago, Bing has been a close contender to Google’s dominance in search. This “decision” engine has come a long way in three years. Bing now powers Yahoo’s Search and has captured 30% of the US search market (Google claims 64.4% according to Experian). Now Microsoft has once again rebranded its search engine with a new moniker and enhanced search results, powered by social media. Dubbed as “Bing is for Doing,” Bing has implemented a right-hand social column that will integrate Facebook, Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, Blogger and even Google+ results into the search query.

Bing has already rolled out some initial changes, implementing a new social sidebar: “What Your Friends May Know.” Bing also removed its “search history” feature and “narrow by date” section that occupied the left-hand sidebar. For now, the sidebar only works with Facebook and sometimes Twitter. To see the new social sidebar, users must be logged in to Facebook. When users enter a query, the sidebar will display a list of their Facebook friends that Bing suggests might know something about their search based on their likes, photos and profile information on Facebook. Login to your Facebook account and then go to www. bing.com/new for a quick demonstration of the power of this new search sidebar.

Bing’s New Social Interface continued Once completely rolled out, Bing’s interface will make it more possible to share everything users do, including where they are and who they are, all in real-time. According to Bing, 90% of people consult with a friend or expert before making a decision. With the new Social Search, Bing is trying to mirror how people do things in real life.

The new Bing will have a three column design that focuses on bringing information from the web to help users take action and interact with friends and experts without compromising the core search experience.

Core Web Results: Bing’s algorithm has not been altered to change how it retrieves results based on relevance. Results will not be cluttered with social updates, but will still focus on the links users need to retrieve information. Bing has also been tracking its progress and has been testing its search against Google. In January, Bing found that 34% of people preferred Bing in 2011, while 38% preferred Google. The same unbranded study now shows that Bing Search results currently have a much wider margin lead over Google’s. When shown unbranded search results, 43% prefer Bing results while only 28% prefer Google results. Snapshot: Snapshot is the center column on the Bing search results page, settled between the web results on the left and the new sidebar on the right. Snapshot brings relevant information and services related to a user’s search to the main results page, which will include maps, restaurant reservations and reviews.

Sidebar:

June 12, 2012: AIRS will be presenting at the AESC Asia Pacific Researchers Summit in Singapore. June 19, 2012: AIRS will be presenting at the Recruiting Trends Sourcing Summit in Atlanta, GA. July 19, 2012: AIRS will be speaking at the Tennessee Recruiters Association in Nashville, TN. June 25, 2012: AIRS will be presenting at the AESC European Researchers Summit in London.

The sidebar will always be present, even with advanced Boolean queries, but it will remain off to the right, allowing researchers to decide when and how to interact with it. Bing moved most of the social content out of the main search pane and put it in a dedicated place where people can always expect to find it. Bing has also made it easier for researches to ask their network any question to garner responses from their Facebook friends as they search. Users can “tag” friends Bing suggests might know about the topic. In a few simple clicks, users can share their search and their friends can reply to their question on either Facebook or Bing.

August 22, 2012: AIRS will be speaking at the Colorado Talent Recruitment Network (CTRN) in Denver, CO. September 14, 2012: AIRS will be at the Mobile Recruiting Camp Conference (MRecruiting Camp) in Atlanta, GA. September 20, 2012: AIRS will be at the NAPS 2012 Annual Conference in San Antonio, TX. October 4, 2012: AIRS will be presenting at the Online Recruitment Conference & Exhibition in London. October 14-17, 2012: AIRS will be at the Recruiting Conference in Las Vegas, NV.

In the coming weeks, users will be able to experience the new Bing on mobile devices (m.bing.com.) Bing optimized the layout and placement of the social results on the mobile device for smaller screen sizes and for touch input optimization for sourcing on the go.

country: Updated at Exalead

O

n the quest to find candidates living within the United States who are willing to relocate within the US, many recruiters ask if they can add the phrase “United States” to a biographical (aka resume style) Boolean search. While the hopeful answer is yes, the unfortunate reality is no because Boolean search is based upon discovering keywords or links on a document and the majority of US based candidates do not add the phrase “United States” or “America” to their contact information. The command country:NA/US at the search engine Exalead previously solved our search dilemma. Up until late December 2011 adding this tidbit of Boolean to a string instructed Exalead to return only results coming back from US servers, then this command ceased functioning during the Exalead “upgrade”. The revisions to the search engine and its respective database were all beneficial to recruiters, except for the loss of the country: command. The good news is that it is back and better than ever with modified Boolean leveraging enhanced functionality. Previously the command used the variable two letter continent followed by a two letter country; now it pairs with the ISO 3166-2 standard, or in plain English, the command country:US yields results coming from US servers while country:IL brings back results from Israel. The complete list of two letter country designation codes according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2.

All winners will be posted at: http://bit.ly/AIRSWinners The first person with the correct answer each week will win a seat to one High Impact Learning Series (HILS) class of their choice. These course dates, times and descriptions are available on the AIRS website: http://bit.ly/AIRSHILS AIRS HILS classes cover topics ranging from mobile recruitment and building custom search engines to filetype searching and college recruiting strategies. The country: command produces results based on the location of the webserver that holds the data for the webpage. Notice that “IL” appears in most of the URLs; however not all of them, so XRaying the “IL” domain would miss a result such as http://www.dr-finkel.com/CV%20EN.htm.

Contrast the country: with site: NEW SEARCH STRING: site:IL (intitle:cv OR inurl:cv) professor XRaying a particular country domain, such as “IL”, will limit results to only those from that particular country domain. In this XRay example, “IL” yields more results, as not all of them reside on webservers based in Israel. Additionally, this will eliminate results that are on webservers based in Israel that are not housed on the top level domain “IL”. This is the reason why country: is such a valuable search tool for recruiters today.

SIDE NOTE: There is a possibility results will be found coming back from known US servers when using the country: command; however keep in mind that those results are most likely due to mirroring, which is a duplicate data backup for that webpage. This will happen more often with very large global websites like cnn.com versus personal webpages.
