Seven Burning HOT Mobile Apps for Next-Generation Networking

S

In This Issue Seven Burning HOT Mobile Apps for Next-Generation Networking_____________ 1 Through the Eyes of Your Candidate ______________ 4

XSW, South by Southwest, may have started as a music festival, but it didn’t take long for the geeks to take over. SXSW helped launch successful social sites like Twitter and Foursquare, and at this year’s conference nothing was more talked-about than locationbased mobile apps. The basic notion of these location-based apps is to link a profile and connections from social networks like Facebook and Twitter with locations logged via mobile. Most of these apps track and passively monitor surrounding locations with user permission; however all of these apps can make recruitment networking from your mobile device a tremendous value “on the go”.

Check out these seven apps from SXSW this past month:

INTRO (iPhone - Android “coming soon”)

Unraveling Ravelry for Diverse Talent _ _______________ 5

Aimed to help with professional networking and introductions, this app is built off of LinkedIn connections and lets you specify who you’re looking to meet by both industry and profession, then enables you to make that connection. The app uses your LinkedIn profile data to determine what industry you’re in, and suggest possible matches nearby. That top Financial Analyst candidate could be sitting at a table where you are currently buying a latte.

Seven HOT Mobile Apps continued Highlight (iPhone) If someone standing near you also has Highlight, and you have a common interest, like Starbucks, their profile will show up on your phone. When you are nearby another Highlight user, the app will tell you what you have in common. Highlight taps into your Facebook network to provide its social enhancement features. Everyone talks at the grocery store, but how about encountering a candidate for that purple squirrel position you thought may be impossible to fill.

Banjo (iPhone, Android) This app taps into data from Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram and more, and shows you where people are and what they’re saying, doing, based on their check-ins or geotagged tweets, regardless of connections or common interests. The app also alerts users when actual connections are nearby, even if they don’t have the app installed. It’s tough to keep in contact with people you’ve recruited in the past, but if they are in your network, and come up while you’re having a drink with friends at Chili’s, why not say “hello” and see how they are doing. The lifeline behind being a great recruiter is about being able to network and this app takes that ability to a new plateau. Glancee (iPhone, Android) Glancee helps you discover who’s around you prioritizing people based on similar interests or common friends, by using Facebook profile data. It doesn’t display exact locations but uses approximate locators, like “10 miles away.” On the app’s home screen, it summarizes how many things you have in common. If someone pops up on your app, let them know you’re a recruiter and tell them to reach out to you if they’re looking for a new opportunity or just want to network. AIRS Sourcing Report

Seven HOT Mobile Apps continued Forecast (iPhone, Android) Changing the way users check-in, Forecast lets you mark the places you’ll be in the future. It’s designed to help you be more social offline, adding an opportunity to plan with others for an upcoming meet-up, instead of checking-in while you’re at a given location. Checkout all the cool places your friends will be going. This is a great opportunity to find networking events and groups; leveraging this app will give you an edge.

Kismet (iPhone) This social location based application allows you to announce your location. It uses active check-ins and ambient locations to maximize list of connections; ranks users by how you’re connected; lets you check in to Facebook & Foursquare. In congested areas, Kismet can be the best solution to finding people with common interests. Add interests about the particular roles you are recruiting for to allow yourself to be found by professionals in the industry. EchoEcho (iPhone, Android & Blackberry) By only working with other EchoEcho users, this app will map your friends both indoors and outdoors. The app uses GPS outside then switches to Wi-Fi when you head indoors, using special technology from the startup WifiSlam to map out the interior of the buildings. This app allows you to adjust your visibility on a friend-by-friend basis too. Make candidate meetings a snap by allowing them to be able to find you for a lunch date. Mobile locations apps such as EchoEcho bring back the in-person connections that recruiters used to have prior to the internet.

Through the Eyes of Your Candidate

T

he “Candidate Experience” is a hot topic of discussion in the Talent Acquisition community. The most common denominators of the candidate experience are a hiring organization’s employment brand, the presence of a “killer career page”, and the interaction with the hiring team; but this list rarely encompasses the candidate interaction with the application process on the company career website. With the entire candidate experience having such a profound impact on the results of what you do as a recruiter, it can be very beneficial to understand the experience first-hand. Is anyone on the recruiting team truly aware of how much time and energy people, you tirelessly target in your job tweets and LinkedIn InMails, have to spend applying for a job, you are begging them to consider? Has anyone heard the true accounts of those precious applicants who spend an exorbitant amount of time clicking through links that lead them in an endless loop; only to discover after hours of copying and pasting portions of their resume into a template that they’re still required to upload a copy of their resume as well, and the system does not accept documents from the MAC they are working on.

AIRS PowerBreak Series The AIRS monthly PowerBreak Series features a free, 30 minute topic specific session. April 2012: TWITTER – The Green Vegetable of Recruiting April’s class digs deep into Twitter, one of the 10 most highly trafficked sites in the US today. If you’re not currently using Twitter as part of your sourcing strategy, this class will be a real eye opener. April’s class is on Friday April 27, 2012 at 2pm ET. Sign up now! http://bit.ly/zL9o1D

It is a tough to listen to these true stories through a Talent Acquisition Professional’s ears because they could have been prevented. If there is one piece of the recruitment process that is the easiest to view “realtime” through the eyes of an applicant, it is the company career website application process. The simple solution to understanding the candidate experience is to audit your own career site. Follow these simple steps to make annual or even quarterly evaluations: 1. Take a look at your career site application process to see if there are any compatibility issues or limitations you may be able to identify to help get resolved. 2. Search for your job opening at Google or a major aggregator such as Indeed.com. 3. Once you find your posting, how difficult was it to get to the actual application page? Take notes. 4. Apply for your own job, and take note of anything you personally feel to be frustrating. 5. During the resume submission/upload process did you discover any steps that were redundant? 6. Test your application process from other Browsers such as Safari, Opera, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Keep in mind that every step of the recruitment process has the potential to influence a potential employee’s decision to choose which employer to call home. It continues to be a mystery to candidates why the online application process for many companies today can be so cumbersome. Since you have the ability to audit your own application process with instant feedback, apply to one of your open requisitions today! www.airsdirectory.com

Slash the Web for Recruiting Resources & Industry Professionals

B

lekko is still a relatively new search engine having only launched in November of 2010; however it offers up some searching capabilities not found at any other search engine today. Blekko’s slashtag, “/”, search gives users an opportunity to narrow their search results down to a specific category based on keywords. It is similar to using an online directory such as DMOZ but rather than having to click through link after link, the user simply creates a slashtag that is based on a particular category and the results are limited to results based on that category. Take a look.

http://blekko.com/ SEARCH STRING: internal auditor profile If you were looking for internal auditors for example, you would normally enter a phrase such as “internal auditor” and then maybe start adding things like (resume OR cv OR vitae) to target biographical results. Blekko functions on just simple keywords, and then you use a slashtag based on a particular keyword to narrow down the results.

In this example, you might think about adding something like /a…. to find things related to “auditing” and you will find a slashtag for “accounting” /accounting.

This simple search yields an abundance of resources for advertising, but also brought back some internal auditor profiles. Controlling the subject of your search engine results is a powerful tool for any recruiter. Go take some time to give Blekko and slashtag searching a try today! *Keep in mind that some of Blekko’s slashtags are pre-built by the Blekko team so they have a large amount of data behind them, whereas other slashtags are created by Blekko users. This really makes this search engine unique as the search engine users have the ability to take part in how the search engine data is organized. Anyone can sign-up for a free Blekko account and then create their own slashtags that are tied to specific online web pages.
