SOUTH SUDAN : Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 18 February 2016) In Focus: Malaria Outbreak 2015

Malaria cases and deaths by age in 2015

In 2015, South Sudan experienced an unprecedented malaria outbreak, with nearly 2.28 million malaria cases and 1,340 deaths reported in health facilities across the country. This was a sharp increase compared to 1.54 million cases and 718 deaths reported in 2014. The outbreak in 2015 took a particularly harsh toll on children under age 5, who accounted for almost a third of the reported cases – nearly 896,500 - and 75 per cent of the deaths - about 1,010. In Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile, some 55 per cent of the health facilities are no longer functioning, and it is therefore likely that under-reporting impacted on the number of recorded cases.
