MARCH 2013
This is Southland’s first ever Heritage Month; a special opportunity to celebrate our proud heritage and identity. It is my pleasure to welcome you - participants and visitors alike - and to wish you great enjoyment from a month that brings together so many aspects of our past. By celebrating them, we keep them alive for the benefit of our children and grandchildren.
Frana Cardno Mayor, Southland District Council

AN INTRODUCTION
‘Heritage’ includes all those things inherited from the past that we wish to pass on to future generations. They define who we are: our culture and character, our communities and people. So, Heritage Month brings together a vibrant mix of activities - from Southland’s rural traditions to a celebration of our cultural identity, special places, landscapes, buildings and gardens, foods, art, stories, skills and practices. This month realises the vision of many passionate heritage people. But it was made possible only by a groundswell of community support from Southland funders, local government and others who believe that recognising Southland’s heritage is an investment in our future. Cathy Macfie Chairwoman, Southland Rural Heritage Trust
