Speed Dating for Business Picture yourself sitting down at a table of friends and just talking and telling them about what you do. It’s casual, but fun and you learn a lot about the people you’re hanging out with and they learn about you and your business. That’s pretty much the whole concept of Mega Market. We tell you it’s like speed-dating for business, because it really is. You give the biggest highlights about your products, services or organization in a 2-minute summary. Then the person next to you at the table does the same thing. After everyone at the table has a turn and does some quick Q&A, you change tables and do it all over again. This fastpaced half-day event is one of the best opportunities to promote your business. You not only get lunch and a reception at the end of the day, you walk out with 50-60 contacts and more people that can be your customers or valuable referrals for your business. If you’ve never participated in a Mega Market, we offer them twice a year. Don’t miss the Spring Mega Market on Thursday, March 30th from 11:30am—5:00pm at the Holiday Inn Amarillo West Medical Center. It’s just $60 per person and includes lunch and a reception with food and drinks at the end of the day. If you want to get even more publicity for your business, you can be a table sponsor and be promoted at the event on signage and get extra time to address the whole group. The Drury Inn & Suites, Neighbors Emergency Center and Willdan Energy Solutions have already taken advantage of the limited number of table sponsors available. To add your name to the list of attendees as a participant or table sponsor, signup online at http://www.amarillo-chamber.org/mega-market.html or contact Jason Harrison at 806.342.2018 or [email protected].

Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association Returns to Amarillo for Next Five Years By: Eric Miller, CVC Director of Communications

It has been a natural fit from the start; the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association and Amarillo. A regular fixture of fall events in Amarillo since 2008, the CMSA board has approved a five-year contract extension with the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition and the City of Amarillo to keep their CMSA Wrangler World Championship in our city through 2021. CMSA is a fast-growing equine sport that features top shooters riding some of the fastest horses through a set course. The contestants use two .45 caliber single action revolvers loaded with five rounds of blank ammunition. The most accurate shooter combined with the fastest horse wins. For those who prefer, there are categories for rifle competition. Contestants are required to dress western, either in a contemporary style or more frequently in the style of the late 1800s. “It’s like drag racing on horseback, only you slow down just a bit to shoot your targets and complete the course,” Dan Plaster, president of the CMSA, says. “Our relationship with Amarillo has been outstanding and the board was very excited to nail down our event in Amarillo for the next five years.” “We knew this would be a good pairing. Each weekend the CMSA is in town for the World Championships, they attract hundreds of contestants and their impact is over $500,000. So we welcome them back with open arms,” Dan Quandt, Vice President of the Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council, says. The 2017 CMSA Wrangler World Championships are Oct. 18-21 in the Amarillo National Center.

Congratulations to these Prime Service Award Winners in January Members of the CVC’s Convention & Tourism Committee as well as other Chamber volunteers recently dropped in on the following businesses to deliver an AMA Prime Service lapel pin to these employees who provided someone with PRIME customer service. If you receive outstanding service at an area business, nominate that person for a Prime Service award. Just call the CVC office at 374-1497 or visit http://www.visitamarillo.com/primeservice/.

Are you taking full advantage of the many ways you can grow your business? This is not “Field of Dreams” and “if you build it they will come.” If you want to be successful, you have to make yourself stand out in the crowd amid a sea of other businesses just like yours. That means more than just building a flashy website or pushing your message on the latest social media platform or buying lots of advertising. Sure, those things are important and help, but all businesses can do that. What makes your business special? YOU DO! Have you ever walked through a tradeshow and seen the coolest looking booth full of pictures and samples and displays with videos, but there’s no one in the booth to talk to if you have questions? All the flash in the world doesn’t make up for the human element that makes your business unique. YOU can answer questions and be a walking, talking commercial for your brand, and every employee of your business from the top executive to the hourly employee should be doing the same at every opportunity. Of course we want you to buy a booth and participate in BusinessConnection® or reserve a seat at Mega Market; that’s what those events are designed for. But we know that not all of our 1,700+ members have a never ending supply of money, and many have to make choices that line up best with their budget and marketing plan. Probably 90-95% of our members are made up of small businesses, and we never take for granted the investment you make to be a member of the Amarillo Chamber. That’s one of the biggest reasons why we LOVE being able to provide After Hours Networking events as a FREE benefit to you. We know some people just come for the free food and drinks, and if that’s the only reason you are coming, you’re missing the whole point. These events are designed to bring people together to open lines of communication. Wear your company logo proudly. Put on a nametag. Have business cards ready, and step out of your comfort zone to extend a hand and a smile to meet the guy or girl standing there waiting their turn for a drink or hors d’oeuvre. When you wear your brand, accessorized with a smile, it makes it easy for people to strike up a conversation and get to know you. Chances are the product you are selling isn’t all that rare or unique...but YOU are. And building a relationship with people is what will make them your customer and keep them coming back time and time again or giving you something even more valuable...a referral to their friends. So get out and take advantage of any opportunity to meet people and promote your business, and not just at Chamber events either. The calendar of events in Amarillo is jam-packed with opportunities. If you don’t go to the After Hours on March 2nd, then get a ticket to the Restaurant Roundup or stop by Run Business Solutions 10th Anniversary open house that night to congratulate them and meet some new people. And on the 16th, join the Convention & Visitor Council with AMA TechTel and the Amarillo Venom for a FREE What’s on Tap event. Opportunities are out there, you just need to take advantage of them. And if networking events scare you, bring along a friend or colleague and work the room together. If you are going at it alone, grab me or another Chamber staff person and ask them to introduce you to someone new. We’re happy to help. As always, tell us how we are doing. Give us your suggestions, feedback, and input. Feel free to write on our Facebook wall. Get involved. We are proud to be YOUR Chamber.

The 2017 Relocation Guides have arrived at the Chamber office and are ready to be picked up or mailed to anyone who might be considering moving to Amarillo. Feel free to come by or let us know who needs one dropped in the mail. The 2017 City Maps will be available soon. Watch your mailbox for the new 2017 Membership Directory. One copy will be mailed to each member business or organization going out next week. Included will be your 2017 Membership Certificate that is suitable for framing to display proudly in your business. We work hard to ensure that your membership listing is correct, but in the event that we got something wrong, please accept our apologies and give us a call ASAP to get your listing corrected in our online directory and before next year’s printing.
