Sponsorship Proposal 2017 THANK YOU for your interest in supporting Camp Footloose 2017. As a charitable health organisation, we rely heavily on community support and sponsorship to continue running programs like our children’s camps. What kids and young people gain from coming to Camp Footloose is invaluable: a chance to grow, a chance to participate free of judgement, a chance to just be a kid.

Juvenile Arthritis - Why your support of Camp Footloose matters What is Juvenile Arthritis? Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) – generally known as juvenile arthritis – is the term used for all the types of arthritis that are diagnosed in children and young people under the age of 16 years. It is an inflammatory autoimmune condition which, if not treated quickly and appropriately, can seriously affect the growth and development of a child, causing severe joint damage, growth abnormalities and permanent disability. Juvenile arthritis is one of the most common, as well as serious, persistent medical conditions that occur in childhood. The incidence of juvenile arthritis is unfortunately increasing, with 1 in 800 Australian children now affected. All arthritis – in adults as well as children – involves inflammation of the joints, with common symptoms including pain, swelling and stiffness in one or more joints that can swing between mild to disabling.

Daily Challenges Living with juvenile arthritis can be challenging, not only for the child or young person, but also for their families and friends. Painful flare-ups and compromised mobility can take away the enjoyment of sporting and other physical activities, and sometimes the ability and motivation to participate. Even normal daily living tasks like getting dressed, using cutlery, operating electronic devices, doing schoolwork and taking assessments can be difficult, if not impossible. And the pain is not just physical. Persistent pain can lead to poor sleep patterns, impaired concentration, frustration and mood swings, all of which can negatively impact upon behaviour and social relationships. Self-esteem and confidence are at times undermined, along with school and athletic performance. Being misunderstood and discriminated against, especially in school, only intensify children’s feelings of stress and grief.

Why Camp Footloose is important In their article ‘Children’s Experiences of Living with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: A Thematic Synthesis of Qualitative Studies’, authors Tong, Jones, Craig and Singh-Grewal report that the impact of juvenile arthritis on children’s lives is reflected in six major themes: 1) aversion to being different; 2) striving for normality; 3) stigma and misunderstanding; 4) suspension in uncertainty; 5) managing treatment; and 6) desire for knowledge. The authors identified in their study that a sense of community, with support from family and other young people with a shared experience, was particularly important to regaining a sense of normality in the lives of those with juvenile arthritis. “Camps or social outings can facilitate the learning of coping

skills, as well as promote a sense of normality and social inclusion.” Therein lays the importance of Camp Footloose.

About Camp Footloose 2017 Camp Footloose 2017 This year’s camp will be held at the Berry Sport and Recreation Centre, Berry NSW, providing thirty-five young people living with juvenile arthritis the opportunity to expand their physical and social boundaries in a safe and supportive environment. Running for 5-days during the September school holidays (25th to 29th September), participants will be guided through a variety of fun and educational activities by our staff and volunteer leaders. A registered nurse will be on-site for the duration of the camp, available 24 hours per day to assist with medications and pain management in case of a flare-up. Guest healtheducation speakers will present information to help participants develop their self-management skills, providing them with a sense of control over their condition and their lives.

Why we need your support The costs associated with organising and delivering an event such as Camp Footloose are high – in the vicinity of $50,000 per camp, equivalent to $1,500 per participant. Aside from the usual expenses associated with any sport and recreation camp - such as accommodation and meals we also provide a higher staff-to-child ratio (1:3), a registered nurse in-residence 24hr, healtheducators to facilitate education workshops, and specialty equipment for recreational activities. At Camp Footloose 2017, paediatric rheumatology nurse Anne Senner will be working us. Other speakers are scheduled to address topics such as the transitioning of young adults from paediatric care services to fully-fledged adult services. To ensure accessibility, we contain fees to $165 for members, $215 for non-members. Sponsorship is sought to cover the shortfall between fees recovered and the actual cost per participant. Further, Camp Footloose is currently a once-a-year event. We would love to be able to expand the program so as to reach more young people living with juvenile arthritis in NSW – to run more camps per year and have more children per camp. Funding, of course, is what is needed.

Sponsoring Camp Footloose Your lasting impact Arthritis NSW is committed to building mutually beneficial, long term, corporate partnerships as we address the negative impact arthritis has on our community, our economy, and in particular, our children and young people. A partnership with Arthritis NSW provides companies with an opportunity to demonstrate concern for and commitment towards helping to find answers to the many remaining questions about arthritis, and to supporting the estimated 1 in 4 people diagnosed with an arthritic condition in NSW. Sponsorship of Camp Footloose is a wonderful way to have a lasting impact on the lives of the children and young people attending, all facing the challenges inherent to living with juvenile arthritis. Many form long-lasting friendships at Camp Footloose. In the words of a previous participant, Ashley, 15: “….we all have the same condition and we can talk to each other about it… like it’s a support group.”

Our commitment to you When you sponsor Camp Footloose 2017, we will work with you to ensure that the collaboration compliments your existing brand values, enhances your image, and provides a platform to increase the positive community perception and credibility of your business.

Sponsorship packages Our sponsorship packages have been structured so that no matter what size your business, there is a sponsorship level suited to your desired level of investment.
