Celebration of Impact is a benefit for

Creating Positive Impact Since 1970, Southwest Solutions has worked to help Detroit neighborhoods become stronger, healthier, and more prosperous. Our programs and services address an array of individual, family, and community needs and work holistically to promote human, economic, and community development. Together, they form one of Michigan’s most comprehensive neighborhood revitalization and human services organizations, impacting more than 20,000 people annually.

Our housing programs began in 1979 and have made Southwest Solutions a leader in planning, developing, and managing affordable housing and commercial property, primarily in southwest Detroit. We revitalize our community through collaborative, highquality and innovative projects, and by promoting homeownership and resident-centered development. Our mixed-use projects stimulate commercial and cultural development. Our economic programs are the youngest, but some of the most impactful and exciting, of Southwest Solutions. These include opportunities for individuals and families to achieve greater economic success through workforce development, work readiness, adult literacy, home buyer services, and neighborhood-based entrepreneurial training programs. We provide these services in partnerships across the City of Detroit.

The Event Our counseling programs are where our organization first began and they include: Children, Youth, and Family Counseling; Adult Counseling; Supportive Housing; School-Based Services (Community Schools); and Homeless Services. These programs particularly focus on the mental health needs of individuals and families across Detroit and southeast Michigan, with the broader goal of supporting community wellbeing.

On Friday, September 14, 2018, Southwest Solutions will host our inaugural Celebration of Impact fundraiser to mark our 47 years of social impact in Detroit. It will be a memorable evening of celebrating our mission of service and the importance of philanthropy, as well as honoring our founders, our retiring CEO John Van Camp, and prominent local and national Social Impact leaders known for tackling complex social problems.

The Msgr. Clement Kern Impact Awards We will be presenting the inaugural Monsignor Clement H. Kern Impact Awards to recognize leadership in social impact and justice. Father Kern was the founder of Southwest Solutions, which began in southwest Detroit, an area now recognized as the most diverse neighborhood in Michigan.

Monsignor Kern dedicated his life to serving the city and its people, especially the poor. He was known as “the conscience of Detroit” because of his passionate commitment to social justice. The small community mental health agency that Father Kern started in 1970 has since grown to become one of Detroit’s most impactful and largest social service organizations. The Monsignor Clement Kern Impact Awards honor local and national leaders who have demonstrated the same commitment to advancing social justice and creating social impact that changes lives and communities.

John Van Camp and the Van Camp Social Impact Fund John Van Camp joined Southwest Solutions in 1974 as the second employee. He has led Southwest Solutions since 1982 as only the third CEO in the organization’s nearly-fifty-year history. John believed that reintegrating the mentally ill and homeless into the community and defeating stigmatization and discrimination also required decent, affordable housing and support services, education and employment opportunities. Because the wellness of residents requires the wellness of neighborhoods, Southwest Solutions expanded its role in Detroit’s community revitalization and economic development efforts.
