sport connector Thank a “Sport Maker” Sport Wellington is supporting the ‘Thank a Sport Maker’ campaign which recognises the tens of thousands of sport volunteers (or “Sport Makers”) who literally make sport happen in the greater Wellington region. The campaign is part of a partnership with the Lotto Volunteer Foundation and Sport New Zealand that will see the greater Wellington region sharing in over $1 million of quality clothing and sports gear to be awarded to Sport Makers throughout New Zealand over the next three years. People can show their appreciation for the Sport Makers who blow a whistle, coach, balance the books or help cook the sausages for the fundraising BBQ, by sending a thank you e-card available at thanks.lottovolunteers.co.nz

Logan Brown Coach and Volunteer Awards Logan Brown Coach of the month Miriam Wilson from Harbour City GymSports (pictured below) puts in an enormous effort six days a week for the Club into gym for all coaching. Miriam is a great leader and excellent role model to gymnasts and younger coaches. She approaches all of her coaching well prepared and organised and she delivers with enthusiasm and great passion. Miriam’s role is as a lead coach and coordinator and each week she actively engages with 250+ recreational school aged gymnasts, a competitive squad, the team-gym gymnasts as well as several hundred school children who attend school gymnastics at ASB Sports Centre.

Logan Brown Volunteer of the month Vicky Hyde-Smith is the Junior Convenor at the Karori United Tennis Club and played a lead role in hosting a very successful Junior Tennis Open Day on Sunday the 1st September. Vicky ensured that the required resources were on hand such as welcomers, registration people, coaches on court so that juniors could play and have fun and games, appropriate ‘hand-outs’ providing information about the club and the various options for junior club members, new season demo racquets, bbq and other food and refreshment and spot prizes. The combination of on the day and on-line registrations led to 135 junior members joining the club. Vicky went on to place 95 players who wished to play in regular competition into inter-club teams, including appointing managers to every team. Vicky is a mother of three, in full time employment, and would be the first to admit that this couldn’t have been achieved without a team effort and the support from her husband Jon. The coach and volunteer of the month both receive a Logan Brown Bistro lunch for two with wine tasting options. Logan Brown Restaurant is synonymous with excellence and service; values which align closely with the positive aspects of volunteering and coaching. They will also receive sporting apparel from ISC Lenco, a leading New Zealand manufacturer of quality uniform and sports apparel. Sport Wellington encourages all Wellington and Wairarapa sports clubs, schools and regional sporting organisations to nominate their coaches and volunteers. Go to:
