FIRST-CROP SIRES TO WATCH AT FASIGTIPTON JULY By Eric Mitchell t @BH_EMitchell

ntering year sires of 2016 were lauded during the fall mixed sales as one of the deepest sire classes by the overall quality of their first foals. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is the class leader by average and hype, but five other sires had weanling averages exceeding $100,000. Heading into the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Sale, the country's first yearling auction of the year, the enthusiasm for this sire class has grown, with the spotlight capturing an increasing number of promising stallions to watch. Select Sales will offer the only American Pharoah yearling at the July sale, a filly (Hip 131) out of the stakes-producing Yonaguska mare Yong Musician. (A second filly out of Distorted Point was scratched.) The mare has already produced Peruvian group 1-placed winner Kingdom Road and grade 3-placed winner Co Cola out of four to race. "People are surprised we put an American Pharoah in the July sale, but I figured why not?" said Carrie Brogden, who operates Select Sales with Andrew Cary, Jay Goodwin, Tom Mullikin, and Amy Bunt. The filly was bred by Brogden's Machmer Hall. "She is a good-moving, goodvetting filly, and we figured to go where no one else is going," Brogden continued. "There are ton in Saratoga—as expected—and there are ton in September. If you have the right physical, I think

people will appreciate it." Brogden said it helps the 2016 sire class's reputation collectively to have Ashford Stud's American Pharoah (by Pioneerof the Nile) as its market leader. "I think the feeling from having such an elite racehorse leading the sire crop boosts everything," she said. "Add to that having surprises with horses like Tapiture, a very modestly priced horse who really came out." The weanlings by Darby Dan Farm's Tapiture (by Tapit), who were bred on a $7,500 stud fee, wowed buyers at the fall sales, where they averaged $87,208. His top seller, a colt out of Lady Leftennant (by Officer) was bought by Hunter Valley Farm for $300,000. "He was the surprise package of the freshman sires in November," said Hunter Valley's Fergus Galvin. "They are all well-balanced foals, SATURDAY, JULY 7, 2018

good movers, and have good body types. We have a filly by him, as well, and she's a strong filly, wellmuscled with plenty of quality." Brogden said she expects Tapiture to continue commanding buyers' attention throughout the yearling sale season. "I was regretting selling one of my seasons when I started seeing all his foals," she said. "He really stamps them with really nice hips and really solid minds." Tapiture has the most cataloged in the July sale among the firstcrop sires with 12. He had 13 initially entered, but one (Hip 22) has been scratched. The firstcrop sire with the second-highest number cataloged is Ashford Stud's grade 1 winner Competitive Edge, who still has 10 entered out of 12 initially cataloged. (continued on page 4)

balanced, having good angles, they move well. He will be on my radar as we start looking to buy yearlings to pinhook." Lyons said the best filly he has entered in the July sale is a daughter of Constitution out of the graded-placed black-type winner Livi Makenzie (Macho Uno). (continued on page 5)

WinStar Farm's grade 1 winner Daredevil, a son of More Than Ready, was another pleasant surprise at the mixed sales where 15 weanlings averaged $76,667, putting him among the top 12 in his class by average price. His progeny have only continued to impress. "I was surprised by him and didn't expect to have as many on the short list," said Matt Lyons, vice president of Woodford Thoroughbreds. "They are goodlooking horses that look like fast, early types. I would think they will be popular with the 2-year-old pinhookers." Woodford Thoroughbreds has one Daredevil colt entered in the July sale, who out of the winning Danehill daughter Josette. The sale yearling is a half brother to blacktype winner Woodwin W (by More Than Ready) and a half brother to Helena Bay, the dam of grade 1 winner Collected. Brogden said she doesn't have any Daredevil yearlings in her consignment but she's a believer in the sire's potential. "His yearlings are way nicer than anyone expected, across the board," she said. "I booked about 11 mares to him for his first crop. I then booked 25 mares to him second crop because everyone saw how gorgeous they were." Two other sires that have

FIRST-CROP SIRES TO WATCH AT FASIG-TIPTON JULY (continued from page 4) "I have not seen a lot of Constitutions, but if they look like this filly then he'll be alright," Lyons said. "She has got class and is a quality horse. She could have been high up in the books in September, but I think here she'll stand out more." As for the July sale overall, Galvin said he expects this year's first-crop sires will boost what has been an already solid market. Encouraged by a $1 million Medaglia d'Oro filly last year and an 8.7% increase in the average price, Hunter Valley has entered a few more than usual in this sale. "One thing that was noticeable in November was the resurgence in popularity of first-crop sires," he said. "We've got a Liam's Map that has one of the better pages in the sale. We've been quite impressed with his stock so far. We have gone a little bit heavier on numbers this year hoping it will stay strong." Standing at Lane's End, Liam's Map (by Unbridled's Song) had 12 weanlings average $142,500 last year. The other sires with six-figure averages included American Pharoah ($445,500 for 10 sold), Lane's End's Honor Code ($192,778; nine sold), WinStar's Carpe Diem ($120,824; 17), Bayern ($103,333; 12), and Airdrie Stud's Summer Front ($100,667, nine). The number of sires with six-figure weanling averages is just one example of the depth the 2016 first-crop class seems to possess. Among 2016 firstcrop sires with stud fees of $7,500 or more, the collective weanling average last year was $78,975 for 286 sold. By comparison, the first-crop sires of 2015 (same stud fee criteria) averaged $56,668 for 205 weanlings sold. American Pharoah's 10 weanlings that sold for $4,455,000 certainly bolstered the overall average for his sire class, but even if his weanlings are not considered, the sire class's average was still a robust $65,695. LATE INJURY FORCES MASAR OUT OF CORAL-ECLIPSE By Lee Mottershead/Racing Post

ANDY WATTS / RACINGFOTOS.COM

he eagerly awaited Investec Derby (G1) rematch will be without the horse who won the Derby after Godolphin were dramatically forced to scratch Epsom hero Masar from the Coral-Eclipse (G1) the evening of July 6. Having spent much of the day treating Masar for what is thought to have been a bang to an off-fore leg sustained at morning exercise, Charlie Appleby and his team were left with no option but to abandon plans to send Masar back into battle with Roaring Lion and Saxon Warrior at Sandown, third and fourth, respectively, in the June 2 Investec Derby. Following the defection of Masar, who had been a best-priced 7-4 favorite to triumph for Sheikh Mohammed, Roaring Lion became the sponsor's Eclipse market leader at 13-8, with Saxon Warrior quoted at 9-4. "It looks as though he has given himself a bang to his offfore this morning," Appleby told the Racing Post on Friday night. "It's sore, and too sore for him to run. We reviewed it again this afternoon, and the right decision, sadly, is not to run. Masar will remain under veterinary supervision for the time being.

"When a horse has inflammation, you have to get rid of that before you can properly start investigating and carrying out scanning procedures." Appleby added: "I spoke to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed about the situation and, as he said, we have to do what's best and right for the horse. "This is just one of those things. We now have to get him right and get him back, which is what we will do." In Masar's absence, William Buick replaces James Doyle on 2016 Eclipse victor Hawkbill, a 20-1 outsider in a field reduced to seven runners and, therefore, a much less attractive proposition for each-way betting purposes. SHE'S A JULIE DELIVERS SPECIAL WIN FOR OWNER CASTILLE By Evan Hammonds t @BH_EHammonds

wner Carrol Castille might have just found his new favorite track: central Iowa's Prairie Meadows. The Louisiana-based owner of Whispering Oaks Farm won last year's Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3) with Iron Fist, and he was back in town the evening of July 5 to see his She's a Julie run off with a 5 1/2-length score in the Iowa Oaks (G3). "It's a great place with a great atmosphere," Castille said of Prairie Meadows. "It's a lot of fun." She's a Julie was bred by Godolphin and was a $160,000 purchase by Castille at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. By the late Elusive Quality out of Kydd Gloves, a filly from the only crop of Dubai Millennium, She's a Julie was consigned by Padraig Campion's Blandford Stud. "She has a great pedigree, and (trainer) Steve (Asmussen) really loved her conformation, size, and style. And she was well within our budget," Castille said. "Steve has been high on her for quite some time. We broke her on the farm, and we knew she was going to be special. She was shin-bucking all of our other 2-year-olds." She's a Julie packs a punch with her pedigree as well. Kydd Gloves is out of Parade Queen, a multiple grade 3 winner who is the dam of grade 3 winner Untouched Talent, the dam of Bodemeister, who ran second in the 2012 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1). Bodemeister is the sire of 2017 Derby winner Always Dreaming. The filly, who was displaying "heart and fight" while in training, was named for Julie Asmussen, the trainer's wife who has battled cancer. The Castilles and Asmussens have become close friends and have worked as partners in the business for more than a decade. She's a Julie won at first asking in May 2017 at Churchill Downs, then finished seventh in the Debutante Stakes a month later. "Steve thought she was growing really fast and was wanting more ground, so he decided to back off a bit," Castille said. A pair of unplaced finishes this year in New Orleans

She cut back to optional-claiming allowance company for a pair of starts under the Twin Spires prior to the Iowa Oaks. "She's a big filly, and now she's right on target," Castille said. While Castille is unsure of She's a Julie's next start, she'll likely head to Asmussen's base at Saratoga Race Course. Also in Saratoga is Whispering Oaks' Sir Truebadour, a More Than Ready 2-year-old colt who won the June 30 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) in Louisville. Sir Truebadour, a full brother to grade 1-winning Regally Ready, was a $300,000 purchase. Castille is "dreaming now that he'll step in distance for the big races down the road." BH

AT DELAWARE, MAYA MALIBU AIMS FOR FIRST STAKES SCORE By Doug McCoy

leven months ago, Maya Malibu looked as though she could be one of the top 2-year-old fillies in the country. While a stakes win has proven elusive, trainer Graham Motion sees the grade 1-placed filly moving in the right direction as she enters the $300,000 Delaware Oaks (G3) July 7 at Delaware Park. My Meadowview Farm's Maya Malibu, a daughter of Malibu Moon out of grade 1 winner Island Sand, by Tabasco Cat, won her first start in eye-catching fashion at Delaware Park, then followed that effort with consecutive grade 1 placings in New York. She rallied along the inside to finish second in the Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga Race Course and passed two horses in the stretch to finish third in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park. This year, it's been a somewhat puzzling road for Maya Malibu. ll year long, the connections of Skye Diamonds have been confident. The daughter of First Dude they claimed and turned into a multiple graded stakes winner has been training the way she always has. But, unlike her breakout season in 2017, the same horse hasn't shown up during races. Other than a sixth-place run in the Humana Distaff Stakes (G1) over a wet-fast (sealed) track at Churchill Downs May 5, the results haven't been poor for the California-bred 5-year-old, but there just hasn't been that "oomph." "She's had excuses in each one of them, but you start to wonder," said trainer Bill Spawr. "You can only give them so many excuses. Last time, she didn't handle a

muddy track. We know that." So a return to the location of her first graded score will be a litmus test. A year ago, she bested the likes of grade 1 winner Constellation and champion Finest City in the $200,000 Great Lady M Stakes (G2), and she'll look to defend her title in the 6 1/2-furlong sprint July 7 at Los Alamitos Race Course. "We'll get a really good line on where we're at," said Jon Lindo, who owns Skye Diamonds in partnership with Allen Racing, Bloom Racing Stables, and Tom Acker. "She likes the racetrack, and we'll get a fast track, obviously. I'm as interested as everyone else to see where we are. I just know when she's right, she's going to lay her body down. "For her more than me, I want to see her run a good race. I just like to see her try so hard." After her Great Lady M score last season, Skye Diamonds won the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at Del Mar, then came in fourth in the Breeders' Cup Filly

and Mare Sprint (G1). Her 2018 starts ahead of the Humana Distaff were a pair of third-place runs in the Las Flores Stakes (G3) and Santa Monica Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. In the Santa Monica, Skye Diamonds was beaten 1 1/4 lengths for second by the up-and-coming Marley's Freedom, and they'll encounter each other again in the Great Lady M as the clear betting favorites (Skye Diamonds is 7-5 on the morning line, and Marley's Freedom is favored at 4-5). Marley's Freedom, however, enters the Great Lady M with a bolstered résumé. Cicero Farms' 4-year-old Blame filly won her final start for trainer Bob Hess Jr.—an April 20 optional-claiming allowance—then moved to the barn of trainer Bob Baffert and ran the best race of her 10-race career, a 7 1/4-length romp in the May 27 Desert Stormer Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita. "When I got her she was on her way up, so I can't take a whole lot of credit for that," Baffert said. "She's been training well, but these fillies— especially sprinters, because they run so hard—it's hard to keep them steady. But she still has speed." The rest of the short field is a group of allowance winners. Phantom Proton and Best of Me scored optional-claiming allowance wins last time out, and Turkish Tabby will seek to end an extended winless streak with a first victory on dirt. She last won in an optional-claiming allowance in December 2016 at Golden Gate Fields. BH

where she set the pace for a half-mile before she abruptly stopped heading into the second turn and finished last of 14. She cut back in distance in her last start, when she came in third in the six-furlong Jersey Girl Stakes June 10. "Anything six to seven (furlongs) is great for her," McLaughlin said ahead of the 6 1/2-furlong Victory Ride. "We're happy she's doing well, and we'll hope for the best. Last time she was very wide, so this time we're going back to a shorter distance, and I think it should help." Separationofpowers, trained by Chad Brown, is slated to make her first start since a fourth-place finish in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) Nov. 4 at Del Mar. The daughter of Candy Ride won her debut before a third in the Spinaway Stakes (G1) Sept. 2 at Saratoga Race Course. ia Mischief will look to register another stellar effort against stakes company when she takes aim at the $150,000 Victory Ride Stakes (G3) for 3-yearold fillies July 8 at Belmont Park. Owned by Heiligbrodt, Heiligbrodt, Heider Family Stables, and Madaket Stables, Mia Mischief has four wins and three runner-up finishes in seven starts for trainer Steve Asmussen. The daughter of Into Mischief has won three of her last four starts, including the Eight Belles Stakes presented by Kentucky Trailer (G2) May 4 at Churchill Downs. The only time in that stretch she did not earn a trip to the winner's circle was when Amy's Challenge caught her at the wire to win by a neck in the Dixie Belle Stakes Jan. 20 at Oaklawn Park. Peter Deutsch's Take Charge Paula has posted solid performance in routes as well as shorter races. She started her campaign with a 3 1/2-length win in the Feb. 3 Forward Gal Stakes (G3) at seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee was also competitive when stretched out. She finished second in the Davona Dale Stakes (G2) at one mile March 3 at Gulfstream and also finished as the runnerup in the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) at 1 1/16 miles March 31. ight sophomores will race to establish themselves at the top of the 3-year-old turf division July 7 in the $100,000 American Derby (G3T) at Arlington International Racecourse. One of four graded events taking place that day in the Ride to the Million Presented by Miller Lite, the American Derby will be contested at 1 1/8 miles. Returning to the Chicagoland oval is Arlington Classic Stakes (G3T) winner Ezmosh, who emerges from post 5 under Jose Valdivia Jr. The Oklahomabred son of Tizway owned by Madaket Stables, Ten Strike Racing, and Zayat Stables tried turf for the first time one race prior to the May 26 Arlington Classic—a first-level optional-claiming allowance event over the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots course where he defeated fellow entrant Dubby Dubbie. Trained by Brad Cox, Ezmosh broke his maiden over a fast main track at Churchill Downs in September at third asking and did not find the winner's circle again until switching to the grass in March. Lothenbach Stables' Captivating Moon looms as the biggest competition to the Arlington Classic winner. Although the son of Malibu Moon has yet to find the winner's circle at stakes level, he has been stakesplaced six times and most recently was third in Canterbury Park's June 23 Mystic Lake Derby, beaten 1 1/2 lengths behind Sniper Kitten. The homebred also dead-heated for second in the May 5 American Turf Stakes presented by Ram Trucks (G2T) at Churchill with multiple graded stakes winner Untamed Domain and was second behind Analyze It in the April 6 Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland. The Chris Block trainee will be ridden by jockey Florent Geroux from post 6. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen will send three-time winner Tap Daddy to Arlington exiting a win in Pimlico Race Course's May 19 James W. Murphy Stakes. The 1 1/16-mile event was originally scheduled for the turf but was taken off and contested over a sloppy main track. Owned by Exotique Racing, the son of Scat Daddy broke his maiden over the turf at Kentucky Downs in September by 3 1/4 lengths.

Ezmosh before capturing the May 26 Arlington Classic Stakes at Arlington International Racecourse

Also on the card is the $100,000 Stars and Stripes Stakes (G3T) over 1 1/2 miles featuring Arklow, Nessy, and Slim Shadey. Donegal Racing's Arklow, a 4-year-old Arch colt trained by Cox, won two of six starts as a sophomore, including a rallying victory in the 2017 American Turf. All three of the bay's wins have come on the turf, including a nose score in his 2018 debut over next-out allowance winner Dot Matrix. Nessy put in a monster effort April 22 while making the grade in the San Juan Capistrano Stakes (G3T) over 1 3/4-miles at Santa Anita Park. A veteran of 22 starts with three wins, six seconds, and six thirds for owners Edmond and Sharon Hudon, Nessy will turn back significantly in distance for Saturday's test after landing sixth in the two-mile Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes (G2T) June 8. Classy 10-year-old gelding Slim Shadey, with wins in 14 of his 74 starts and purse earnings of $1,265,955, shows no signs of slowing down with a pair of victories already this season while routing on the Belmont Park turf. The dark bay son of Val Royal will seek his third consecutive win while joining the barn of owner Michael Hui, who claimed Slim Shadey out of his most recent start June 9. It will be his first time starting at the level since a nose loss to Conquest Sandman in the Old Man Eloquent Stakes Feb. 17 at Gulfstream Park. BH

AFRICAN NIGHT SKY HEADS SNAITH QUINTET IN DURBAN JULY By Bob Kieckhefer

E

COURTESY OF PHUMELELA INTERNATIONAL

ighteen contenders and two alternates, five of them trained by Justin Snaith, are set for the July 7 Vodacom Durban July (G1) at Greyville—a race noted as much for its exuberant social scene as it is for the top-quality competition. With many of the old guard gone from this year's field, the race appears wide open, with African Night Sky, Do It Again, and Made To Conquer the relatively weak early market leaders. Three-yearolds Majestic Mambo and White River have support, and Abashiri also is prominent. Evocatively named African Night Sky leads the charge for Snaith, whose two previous

victories in the July, with Dancer's Daughter and Legislate, add to the family tally started by his father, Chris, who won with Flaming Rock in 1991. "In addition, my wife Lauren is from the Henwood family," Snaith told TAB News in the lead-up to the race, "and if you go back to the early 1900s, you will find that they also have two victories to their name." African Night Sky seeks his first group 1 win in the July, but Snaith said he feels the Dynasty 4-year-old, out of the Cozzene mare Starzene, is in good form and "had a perfect prep. He is so ready." The gelding won the June 9 Cup Trial (G3) over the course. Snaith also fields Elusive Silva, Do It Again, Made to Conquer, and Star Express. Abashiri, a Go Deputy gelding, finished 13th in the 2016 edition.

Snaith's massive presence on the biggest race in KwaZulu-Natal is no fluke, and it reflects the day's importance to the South African racing industry and its central place on the KZN social calendar. "July Day is the biggest thing, and largely determines whether our four months here is a success or we make a financial loss," Snaith said. "Owning a racehorse is all about excitement, and you want to lead your horse in with a big crowd present, so we do put a big emphasis on the Vodacom July, L'Ormarins Queen's Plate (G1), and Sun Met (G1) race days." Race day itself has an annual theme chosen by Gold Circle marketing guru Ken Tweddell and announced in a poem. This year, the theme is "It Is Time," and many racegoers will enter Greyville in fanciful outfits following that message. Infield hospitality tents are packed up and down the stretch and, just inside the finish, a massive venue hosts fashion shows that draw thousands of fans on their own. The dark cloud on the horizon this year is a bitter wage dispute between owners and trainers and many of the nation's grooms that has escalated to threats of violence and a strong statement by South Africa's most prominent international voice, trainer Michael de Kock, that the future of the sport is at stake barring an equitable resolution. The dispute forced Snaith to ride all five of his July starters himself in Wednesday track work. He called it "a privilege." BH

hey produced one of the most rousing finishes to any of the 24 races at Royal Ascot, but Gold Cup (G1) principals Stradivarius and Vazirabad will not face off in the July 31 Qatar Goodwood Cup (G1) after connections ruled out a return visit to Britain for the French stayer. Vazirabad will be rested in preparation for an autumn campaign, with the Qatar Prix du Cadran (G1) and the Prix Royal-Oak (G1) at ParisLongchamp the likely targets for the 6-year-old Manduro gelding. Trainer Alain de Royer-Dupré said on Friday: "Vazirabad returned home pretty weary from Ascot, so he won't be going to Goodwood. "It will come too quickly, and instead we will try to get him back in top shape for the end of the season in France." Stradivarius, who won the Goodwood Cup last year, is a general even-money shot to complete the Ascot-Goodwood double, which would put him within touching distance of the Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers' Million bonus. The Gold Cup was more than just an Anglo-French

ERUPT TO SOUTH AFRICA'S MAINE CHANCE FARM By Zoe Vicarage/Racing Post

MICHAEL BURNS

he South African stallion ranks have gained an exciting addition in the shape of top-level winner Erupt, who is joining the roster at Maine Chance Farm this season. Erupt becomes the only European group 1-winning son of Darley's flagship sire Dubawi to stand in the rainbow nation, and he will be offered alongside leading sires Silvano and Querari. A Niarchos homebred, Erupt was trained for the majority of his career by Francis-Henri Graffard, and the first of his elite-level wins came when landing the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (G1) as a 3-year-old. He did not record another victory for over a year until running out with the 2016 Pattison Canadian

International Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine. Out of the group 3-winning Caerleon mare Mare Nostrum, Erupt is a half brother to the listed stakeswinning Marie De Medici. He is from the family of elite performers Aube Indienne, I Am A Star, and Flying Spur. Syndicator Robin Bruss said: "It is fitting and thrilling that Erupt will stand in South Africa and be available to all breeders at an affordable price. "Erupt is a very beautiful quality horse and ticks all the boxes on racing ability, class, pedigree, and in terms of conformation, he is ringer for his own sire, Dubawi." Erupt will leave Europe this month and enter quarantine in Cape Town before heading to Maine Chance Farm by the end of next month.
