Reigate School of Art students recently enjoyed exploring the cultural city of Amsterdam. Visits to a wide range of art galleries and museums increased their exposure to the work of international artists. The students had a chance to explore the city, learning about its history and experiencing the culture. It was a fantastic opportunity to carry out research and find inspiration for current and future projects. Art & Design Level 4 Foundation Studies student, Daisy Haggerty said: “The Amsterdam trip was a great opportunity to see a wide range of art and design. It’s really helped me push my thinking and given me many more exciting things to talk about at my University interviews this year.”

The Student Union team have been busy getting to know everyone and planning some exciting fundraising events.

WHY NOT GET INVOLVED? The Student Union plays an important role within the College and getting involved looks great on your CV especially when applying to Universities. There will also be various activities for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day on the 24 March 2017, Watch out for further updates! YOUR OPINION COUNTS! If you have an opinion, we’d love to hear it! To find out more about the Student Union, please feel free to e-mail me: [email protected] or pop along to the next meeting - 7 February 2017 at 12.30 in the LRC (second floor).

Level 3 Public Services students had a great opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament in January. The group enjoyed a guided tour and explored the history of parliament. They also got to watch live debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The visit ended with a workshop looking at the election and parliament processes, government and how policies affect public services as a whole.

Reigate School of Art students worked hard in the Autumn term to create over 100 paper and willow outdoor lanterns. The completed lanterns were displayed as part of Kew Garden’s ‘Glow Wild’ exhibition at Wakehurst Place in December. Here are a few pictures of their illuminating work!

Public Services student, Chloe Day enjoyed watching the debates and said “It was great to see the debates in person rather than on TV. It was really interesting to see the law-making process in action, seeing how laws are made and how they impact on public services. It puts everything into perspective.”

Supported Learning (SEND) students raised an amazing £280 selling Christmas cards, decorations and gifts! While Level 3 Childcare students raised an impressive £105 selling cakes and handmade Christmas decorations and gifts for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Well done and thank you to everyone for their support!

Thanks to an extremely kind donation, East Surrey College Motor Vehicle department are now the proud owners of a little red sports car! When Dr Peacock from Oxted offered us his 1985 Seraph 3000, the Engineering department jumped at the opportunity. The kit car was built by Dr Peacock and his two sons, taking 2 years to complete. With only 4,600 miles on the clock, he has donated the car to the College with a full history and list of parts. What an exciting opportunity for Motor Vehicle students to get under the bonnet of an old kit car like this!

In December, the annual Hungry Games saw one of the most nail-biting conclusions in Hungry Games history! The final stage of the game saw Hydra House and Trojan House gamble all their points on a final shot. Both teams hit the centre of the target but underdogs, Hydra House skilfully shot closer to the centre point, winning the game for their house!
