Hello HFC Community, Happy (almost) 2018! Friendship Club is proud to have served over 200 people with disabilities and their families in the Twin Cities area for the last 15 years! Did you know that we offered over 1,000 programs and activities in 2017?! We have come a long way from our start in 2002, and we have each and every one of our members, families, caregivers, staff and volunteers to thank for that… THANK YOU . Moving into 2018 has HFC looking forward to even more opportunities for friendship, growth and community connections in the Twin Cities community. Friendship Club strives to make every program the best possible experience. As the Program Director of HFC, I offer an open and welcome invitation to everyone in our community to reach out to me with feedback, questions, new ideas and more. We want to serve YOU by offering even more valuable and relevant activities and opportunities in the year to come. I hope you enjoy this Program Catalog featuring all the fun to come in 2018! LUKE’S—WEEKLY 2/8—4/12 EXCEPT 4/5 Kairos Alive’s Dancing Heart™ is a lively and fun 90-minute interactive class that leads arts learners through dance, music, and storytelling. These sessions are designed as a creative collaboration between participants and professional artists where the boundaries between artist and audience are dissolved. Kairos teaching artists and participants will sing, dance and create stories together. The program offers in depth arts interaction in which students are taught the languages of dance, music, story, theater, and arts & health education. These sessions will culminate in a final performance at the Landmark Center in the spring. *Saturday’s class will have a special focus on percussion and drumming with musician Kevin Washington. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

CLAY CREATIONS 6:30-8PM AT CDH

Learn the fundamentals of working with clay from the pros at Northern Clay Center! HFC members will use handbuilding methods and wheel throwing techniques to create unique clay art pieces that represent experiences and emotions that are meaningful to them. This class will be tailored to both new and old clay makers interested in learning more! And best of all… This activity is made possible by the voters of you get to take home your works of art!

GLEE CLUB 7-8PM AT ST. LUKE’S

Exercise your vocal chords using a variety of singing techniques as HFC partners with MacPhail Center for Music to bring you our very own Glee Club! Classes will focus on providing tools for self-expression, self-empowerment, improved communication skills and executive functioning skills through the use of neurologic music therapy techniques, music playing, song writing and improvisation.

THE ART OF SOCIAL SKILLS with Upstream Arts FEE: $50 FOR ALL 10 SESSION DATES ALL SESSIONS HELD AT THE SHOW GALLERY TWO SESSION OPTIONS: MONDAY EVENINGS FROM 6-7:30pm ON 3/19—5/14 EXCEPT 4/2 WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS FROM 2-3:30pm ON 3/21—5/16 EXCEPT 4/4 Upstream Arts’ The Art of Social Skills is an interdisciplinary arts class for adults with disabilities that uses the arts to build social emotional and communication skills needed in school, work, and life. Upstream Arts teaching artists—all local, professional artists—lead interactive activities in visual arts, theater, poetry, music, and dance, that nurture selfexpression, interaction and collaboration. Participants will learn the fundamentals of multiple disciplines from some of the most accomplished professional artists, actors and musicians in the Twin Cities. Upstream Arts has 11+ years of expertise in providing classes designed for and accessible to individuals with disabilities. If you are regularly supported by a 1:1 aide/PCA, please bring an aide/PCA to class sessions. ASL and other accommodations provided.

SATURDAYS 2/24, 3/24, 4/28, 5/19 If you love to sing and perform then this is the program for you! Led by certified music therapists Beth and Jen, HFC members sing their hearts out at this casual get together… Karaoke machine included!

COW TIPPING PRESS 7-9PM AT ST. LUKE’S FEE: $50 FOR ALL 5 SESSION DATES WEDNESDAYS WEEKLY FROM 1/24—2/28 EXCEPT 2/14 Join HFC for this innovative new writing program in partnership with Cow Tipping Press. Cow Tipping Press teaches and publishes writing by people with disabilities, encouraging readers to think about this form of human diversity in a new way. *No experience, reading, or handwriting skills are necessary for students to participate.*

This special program requires participants to attend all five weeks. At the end of the five weeks, HFC members will be published authors celebrated at a public reading of their work at The Show Gallery in Lowertown St. Paul! *This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

MOVE & GROOVE 10-11:30AM AT CDH

HFC invites members to join us in the kitchen for this exciting cooking experience! Members will participate in the planning and preparation of each week’s meal. This will include step-by-step instructions from chopping to baking to cleaning up and more! The focus of each meal will be on learning how to prepare nutritious AND delicious meals. Learning about portion control and good decision making surrounding food choices will also be covered weekly. Come see why this is a longtime HFC favorite program!

SATURDAY DATES TBD Being healthy takes work but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! HFC members enjoy this weekly fitness class in which you will participate in relays; play games; walk or jog on the treadmill; break a sweat on the elliptical; and much more! This is a fun way to spend a Saturday with your friends while jamming to music AND exercising! HFC is proud and excited to have personal trainer Nick Boyer on board leading Move and Groove… come see what Nick has in store fur us this spring!!

BOWLING 4:30-6PM AT CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS FEE: $12.50 THURSDAYS WEEKLY FROM 1/11—5/17 EXCEPT 2/8, 3/29, 4/5 Bowl to your heart’s content during HFC’s very own open bowling session! This is an adaptive bowling exercise with ramps and bumpers available. Best of all... bowling will now take place weekly!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS HFC’s Special Olympics team offers four sports: basketball, bocce, golf and unified flag football. Planning is underway for the upcoming basketball season, and teams are forming right now. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TECH UP: APP-TASTIC

6:30-8PM AT ST. LUKE’S CHURCH FEE: $10 DAYS VARY MONTHLY: 1/16, 2/22, 3/22, 4/30, 5/24 Mobile technology is increasingly an important part in everyday living. Navigating this reality can be challenging but holds the potential to improve quality of life, and offer opportunities for education and fun. With this new series of workshops, HFC members will explore technology through smart phones and tablets. HFC staff and guest speakers will present about innovative ways to use technology and offer hands on experience to members. Members are encouraged to bring their own devices for more personalized education.

CDH/HFC ACTIVITIES HFC loves when the school year is in session because it means we get to hang with our besties at CDH! NEXT CHAPTER BOOK CLUB 6:30-7:30PM AT HIGHLAND PARK LIBRARY WEEKLY ON WEDNESDAYS Next Chapter Book Club offers community-based book clubs for adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our members (including some who cannot read) love the way books transport them to different worlds where they meet interesting characters and learn about exciting new things. This is an invaluable on-the-job learning experience for people of all abilities.

MINDFUL MOVEMENT 10-11AM AT TULA YOGA

MONDAYS 1/15, 1/29, 2/12, 2/26, 3/12, 3/26, 4/16, 4/30, 5/14 Mindfulness is paying attention, in a particular way, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. Basically, paying attention to how we are breathing, how we are feeling, how we are eating, how we are communicating with others, and how we are moving. In this class, we will pay attention to how we are breathing and how we are moving. Come explore different types of mindful movement together with us - yoga, gentle stretching, walking meditation, moving meditation and more.

We will create animals that live in the jungle, the ocean, and some that live right here in Minnesota. This class is a mixed media class, which means we will create our animals out of many different art materials, included paint, oil pastels, paper plates, and paper collage. Join us for this playful art class and get creative with friends!

Do you love to read and experience books that transport us to another world? Book Club is an adaptive reading and learning experience for people of all abilities. Participants meet weekly for one hour to read aloud and discuss a book which will be provided by HFC. We encourage people of all reading levels to join—even those who can’t read!

HIGHLAND FRIENDSHIP CLUB POLICIES •

Members who make a cancellation 48 hours in advance or more will receive a credit that may be used at a later date. This credit can now be carried over to the next semester. Late cancellations and no-shows will not be given a credit.



In the event that HFC cannot hold a scheduled program due to unforeseen circumstances, programs will be rescheduled whenever possible. If rescheduling is not possible, members will be issued an electronic program credit. Credits can be applied toward the payment of any HFC programs.



If you register for a program, you are responsible for the payment of the registration fee.



Program payment should occur: online via credit/debit card or via mail.

Sign-in Policy: Member safety is our highest priority



HFC members must be signed in at every program. Parents/caregivers must sign their member in on the sign-in sheet and leave a phone number that they can be reached at during the program.



After the program, parents/caregivers must come into the building to pick up their member.

Medication Administration and Personal Care



HFC employees and volunteers are prohibited from providing hands-on assistance with the activities of eating, toileting, and lifting



HFC employees are also prohibited from administering any medication to HFC members.

Please note most HFC activities occur in the Art Room located in CDH at 529 Hamline Ave S. Each program’s classroom will be listed on the registration page online and in the registration confirmation email.

To access the Art Room: Enter building on east side/Hamline Ave. side via the Susan and John Morrison Fine Arts Building. This building is located right in front of the circular roundabout driveway. Off-street parking is available. Look for HFC staff and volunteers at the door located in the roundabout.
