Programming for Preschoolers & Their Parents | Spring 2018 204.669.4043 • [email protected] • Supported by Healthy Child Manitoba — Putting children and families first In RETSD, we always strive to make our kindergarten classrooms safe, caring places of learning, where children feel included, respected, secure and valued. Each child will grow as a learner through activities that encourage inquiry, discovery, imagination, creativity and problem-solving.

KINDERGARTEN IN RETSD Kindergarten registration in River East Transcona School Division is just around the corner! Starting Monday, March 5, children who were born in 2013 are eligible to be registered for kindergarten at all 27 early years schools in our division. For the 2018–19 school year, RETSD

is pleased to introduce full-day every-other-day kindergarten. Full-day every-other-day kindergarten is in response to feedback from our school community, as well as positive experiences from our two pilot program schools, Bird’s Hill School and Sherwood School. These two schools have offered full-day every-other-day kindergarten for the last eight years.

By having a full day with their students, our dedicated teachers will have the flexibility to devote bigger blocks of time for play-based learning, which has been proven to benefit young children. Teachers will be able to spend more time with the children on their daily routines. Students are sure to have a rich school day experience with even more opportunity to be part of the school community. The transition to full-day every-other-day kindergarten will also help these young students prepare for the full-day every-day experience of Grade 1. Continued on next page >>

THANK YOU

PRESCHOOL PEN PALS

Thank you to all of the parents/ caregivers who completed our online program evaluations this winter. We appreciate the time you put into completing these surveys and the thoughtful comments and suggestions from our participants. Please know your feedback is valued and truly does influence our programming decisions, as we are always striving to improve our classes.

Do you remember how exciting it was, when you were a small child, to receive a letter in the mail that was addressed to you? Do you remember how important you felt and how you couldn’t wait to read your letter?

You are welcome to contact Kelly Martino, Community Programming Co-ordinator—Preschool, at 204.669.4043 or kmartino@retsd. mb.ca to discuss your experiences with our free parent-child programs.

Introduce your child, ages three to five, to the joys of reading and writing through RETSD’s new preschool pen pals program. Your little one will enjoy receiving a special letter featuring a rhyme, joke, sticker and seasonal activity to try. It’s easy to participate—just have your child write a short letter or draw a picture to join this program.

Have them tell a little bit about themselves, like their age and some of their favourite things. Please send your letters, to: Kelly Martino Kinder Links Office Joseph Teres School 131 Sanford Fleming Rd. Winnipeg, MB R2C 5B8 To continue receiving letters throughout the school year, your child needs to keep writing back to us each month. Let the letter-writing fun begin!
