What would you like to say about this course to a student who is considering taking it in the future? Take it!!! Get to know the professors and put effort into learning these basics - they are relevant to EVERY field. Absolutely take this course. Regardless of what major you are, there is so much in this course that can be used in the future. This is a class I wish I had taken earlier in my Duke career. It's not often, at least in my major, that an instructor takes the time to learn 50 names. Most of my Neuro professors don't even take the time to learn 15-30. It was a warm environment, the TAs were great, the skills were highly transferable, and JASP was fun to use. This was the best lab course I've ever taken. The process wasn't the annoying type of "we already know the answer, just spend a lot of time trying to replicate this." Instead, there were clearly defined notes on the procedure, and we were able to walk through things step by step to see the entire process of statistical analysis. This course was a really great way to learn statistics in a context that made sense for a life-sciences major. The examples and problems were very related to the things that I find interesting as a Neuroscience major. Dr. Samanez-Larkin was extremely helpful, clear, and engaging. The professor is great and the work is totally manageable and fair. The midterm was also more than fair. I feel like the goal of the course is really to help me learn, unlike a lot of other classes. Decent amount of work, but if you keep up with lectures and review your weekly problem sets, it is very reasonable. Grading criteria are typically well-defined and TAs/prof are very receptive to questions and feedback. It was amazing. Best way to learn stats at an intro level and it was all due to the Professor. He rocks!!! Good class. Lab helped me learn the concepts much better. This class was excellent! Prof SL made the concepts easy to understand he made lectures interesting and modern. The professor and TAs do a great job of making stats applicable and understandable. PSY 201L lab was an excellent and efficient class in which the TAs were able to answer highly specific questions that inevitably arose from long lectures. The classroom atmosphere was very relaxed but still focused--while the work load was not particularly high, each student was encouraged to participate and each student was thoroughly taught how to run through and write up every analysis. I would even say that lab--especially when strategically taken immediately after lecture--provided the necessary reinforcement of material that would have been otherwise only achieved through rigorous, time-consuming self-study. PSY 201L was an incredibly fun and challenging but never overwhelming course. The topics were highly relevant to general psychology research. Would you like to provide any other comments about this course? loved my time One of the classes that I've learned the most from at Duke. Unlike other classes where I admit I've often memorized information for exams and forgotten it immediately after the course, I feel that I'm leaving PSY 201L with a strong statistics foundation that will stay with me (and be useful!) post-graduation. Professor Samanez-Larkin is one of the best professors I've had and I wish I'd gotten the chance to take a class with him sooner.

The scariest part of the course was the perceived time crunch for the midterm. It was great that we could set up questions and responses, but actually seeing and processing the data took a while, making it difficult to answer under pressure and to actually enter and check everything. Peter (TA) was extremely helpful, and it was really fun to answer his questions even though our class was pretty quiet. The Word doc was very helpful in the moments when I was distracted by my own curiosity about JASP settings, and got me quickly back on track. I liked all of the data sets and thought they were really interesting. Peter's stats / fun questions at the end of the class made the experience all the more enjoyable. I am extremely grateful that Duke offers a course like this and wish they had other classes tailored for different major clusters. (For example, a Physics for life sciences or something like that!) The powerpoint presentations are great, but sometimes get a little slow towards the second half of the semester. You can tell he puts a lot of time and energy into them though which I really appreciate. Honestly, one of the best professors I've had at Duke so far. I've written most of what I wanted to say in the discussion course evaluation, but I overall really enjoyed this course. I think the lecturing could be a bit more organized at times, but I really appreciated how much the professor cares about his students and how he made the material very engaging and applicable. I'm really glad I took this class not only to learn stats, but to learn how to approach and view the world. I really enjoyed the course. Sometimes the lectures were confusing because they jumped a lot, but in general, Professor SL is one of the best professors I've ever had. He made the material applicable to every day life and to students by having us analyze data that we generated and bringing attention to every day practices and stats that we see and having us analyze and think critically about it. I'm really glad I took this course because I've learned a lot not just about stats, but about how to approach the world. Learned a lot. Have always wanted to be able to comprehend stats for the purpose of my research, and I now feel fairly comfortable expressing my data in statistical terms. Assignments should not due at 6pm on Sunday, it stressed me out on Sunday nights! Professor Samanez-Larkin created a class environment where it made learning statistics fun and also took away the stigma of effortless perfection. It was quite easy for me to go ask the TAs and Professor SL clarifying questions or talk to them about my struggles in my class which made learning and doing assignments easier. The homework assignments and exams were relevant and useful. Charlotte (TA) was an attentive, kind, highly knowledgeable and fun instructor with an excellent sense of humor. She deftly conveyed even some of the driest topics in the course without losing our class's attention.
