This Spring Maritime Makers is growing

from our humble roots as a volunteer collective of Etsy team captains into a member driven organization uniting makers, manufacturers, retailers, suppliers, and services

across NB, NS, NL & PEI. We are creating opportunity for economic growth in rural and urban communities by using new models of cooperation and building our local maker movement. Since meeting in 2015 we’ve created an online resource to showcase the makers of our region; helped support and host events like successful Etsy: Made in Canada markets, popups, workshops, and roundtable meetings with city leaders; and represented both Halifax and Charlottetown during the Etsy Maker Cities Summit in Brooklyn this May along with cities from the USA & Canada. A new website to showcase our members and map what is being made and who is making it in our region is launching late Spring in partnership with Small Town Love and Etsy. Flip through this guide to get a look at some of the creativity of those of us making a living and a life on the East Coast. Of course! It seems like ages ago that I was scribbling pages and pages of ideas down. Naming a business is tough! At the time I was starting my business I was also moving into my first home. I've never been a particularly tidy person (my mother's voice is often in my head reaffirming me of this - love you mom!), but I do love to nest. So it's equal parts me trying to be an adult and making and designing objects

13 What do you love most about making a life in Nova Scotia? Nova Scotia has been a very natural fit for me, albeit one I couldn't have predicted. After living in Halifax for a couple of years, Kyle and I made the move to the Eastern Shore. The ocean has it's grip on me. I feel that living near this massive body of water brings people together in some mysterious way. We are all affected by it's moods - from glassy and calm to turbulent and reckless and everything in between. I guess the ocean is reflecting us back to ourselves in many ways and at the same time humbling us.

Your work values well made objects and moments - what do you think makes a house a home? I think part of what makes a house a home is really not tangible. I often walk into a place and just feel a warmth. I think that has more to do with the people that live there and their hospitality then it does with what the home is filled with. That being said, I think we are very much effected by our surroundings and a thoughtful home holding objects that are cherished and considered often go hand and hand with that intangible feeling of a warm and welcoming home. I will often set a table when people come over for dinner with napkins, a table cloth and my favourite dishes. I sometimes feel silly doing this as we eat dinner next to my kitchen that has been in the middle of a renovation for three years. But it's my way of welcoming friends, showing them my appreciation and that I'm happy to have them around my table.

FEATURED MAKER Ashley Anne Clark, Artist Ashley Anne Clark lives and works on Prince Edward Island, we visited her to learn more about her process and how Island living inspires her work. Photographer: Ashley Anne Clark

What is the story behind your art and business? I have quickly learned how closely connected people can be to different symbols and animals. It is almost like I am relaying a message to someone that I do not yet know. Animals have always been a large part of my life and I am an advocate for animal rights. I enjoy provoking new conversations and compelling people to think about our connection to them and their world.


18 Your art draws lots of inspiration from the natural world, including materials like seaweed! How does living on Prince Edward Island influence your art and creative process?

moves and feels and soaks into everything it touches. I enjoy the deep rich blackness it produces which is probably why most of my drawings are so dark. It is a material that is very much alive.

Working on PEI is like returning to the world of my childhood. I love finding colours and lines in nature. It is amazing that all of these resources are just at our disposal and that so many beautiful cycles go on unseen every day. I enjoy manipulating them into something that I can add to and attempt to preserve. PEI is full of secret places to go exploring in and I feel very inspired in those spaces. My process involves a lot of layering so I am always on the hunt for thin sheets of material. The translucently of seaweed resembled thin paper to me and once I worked with it I became addicted.

Foxes, spiders, bats, and birds all make an appearance in your art - where did your interest in animals come from? Animals have always fascinated me. There is something mystical about them. Something they seem to know that we do not. They carry strong meanings and symbolisms. I just find it so enthralling to be living along side all these other living creatures. Some of the animals I started drawing because they were eerie and uncomfortable for me to think of. Bats and Octopus have always given me the heebie jeebies. Yet as I worked through the series and became acquainted with each animal my research would help me have a new understanding and affection for them.

Working on anything new this Spring/Summer? I’ve been captivated by the moon lately. I have noticed that cycles have been a reappearing theme in my work. Recently I have been attuned to how the moon cycle can have an effect on our daily lives. Also if you can keep a secret I may soon be doing Commissioned Mermaid Portraits for those of us who feel at home in the ocean.

What does a work day usually look like for you? No workday is quite the same for me. I have multiple projects on the go at one time and they all have different components to them. Most days I spend some time in at Fox Loft studios where I rent a space with other artists.

19 Are there any Maritime Makers inspiring you lately? Laura Morneau of DWNTWNFOX has always been a great friend and supporter to me since I started my small business. She recently started a new line of jewelry using traditional metal smith techniques with brass and silver. She focuses on themes like sky and ocean, which I find very unique for jewelry makers. Every time I go to her studio I want to take multiple things home with me.

If you could spend a day with any maker/artist, who would it be and why? I have a long list of artists that I would love to lay back and chill with so this is a tough question, but I would have to say that at this moment it would be visual artist Tiffany Bozic. She creates breath-taking images of all kinds of creatures intertwined with each other in these elegant compositions of life and death. She spends her time traveling the world and documenting animal and plant life. I just recently discovered her work and I feel like her studio space would be crawling with inspiration.
