The Nativity of St. John the Baptist

“…Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.” – Acts 13:25 Stewardship is a lifestyle, it's not a program or a process. It's how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily activities, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?

Why do we close the back parking lot gate?

A few people have asked and the reason is safety. There are several drivers who think our parking lot is a pass through to avoid the Hudson Street light and deliberately and without care speed through the lot. As you can imagine, this is dangerous to staff, anyone in the parking lot and those walking on Hudson Street. We are working with the City to attempt to solve this problem with signage to detract these drivers. Any suggestions, let us know!

A NEW ROLE . . .

- Nick Leeper

For four years I have been at this parish serving in several different roles throughout my

time here. I first began as an intern as I was an undergrad at Rutgers University, and eventually became the Faith Formation Director. My time at Saints Peter & Paul has been filled with many learning experiences where I feel I have tremendously grown as a person and as a Catholic. At this point, I take on another changing role in this parish as the RCIA Coordinator and will no longer be the Director for Faith Formation. I am grateful for this experience I had serving as Director of Faith Formation at Saints Peter & Paul, and I am thankful for the people and staff that I have worked with over these years. I thank, especially, the catechists, teachers, and the ministry teams that have worked with me to help our children and families come to appreciate and live out their faith more. These people have certainly stepped up to serve the youngest among us to ensure that the faith is passed on and lived out, and I hope that their example will inspire others in the parish to take an active role teaching and modeling faith in our faith formation programs going forward. Our church is indeed blessed to have these ministers with us and walking alongside us in our faith journeys. Some of my fondest moments will be seeing groups of adults come to love their newly adopted faith through the RCIA program, which I hope to continue seeing, and seeing our families come to Faith Formation with smiles, eager to learn and have fun at church. I hope that The Catholic Community of Saints Peter & Paul will continue to apply its energies, talents, and resources towards advancing the excellent work we have embarked on in regards to Faith Formation. Msgr. Michael is a kind and friendly Pastor, and I am confident that he will continue to make Saints Peter & Paul a place where families come together to explore and live out their faith with joy. I finally pray for all of you, the people of the parish, who support the parish to live out its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ.

RCIA Handbook

The History of the RCIA

Since the days of the Apostles, becoming a Christian has been accomplished by a journey and initiation in several stages. This journey contains certain essential elements:

1. Proclamation of the Word 2. Acceptance of the Gospel 4. Sacrament of Baptism itself

Through the RCIA, the Catholic Church extends an invitation to: Those who are not associated with a community of faith and who wish to become Catholics;

Those who want to learn about the Catholic faith

5. Outpouring of the Holy Spirit 6. Admission to Eucharistic Communion This initiation has varied through the centuries according to circumstances. In the first centuries of the Church, Christian initiation saw considerable development. The entire RCIA process covered a long period of time. It included a series of "rites," these being liturgical landmarks along the path of preparing those who were never baptized and who wished to become Catholics. The process was completed when the Sacraments of Christian initiation were celebrated. The Second Vatican Council's involvement consisted of restoring within the Latin Church the "catechumenate for adults."

The RCIA of Today

Today all of the Rites the Christian Initiation of Adults begin with their entry into the RCIA process and reaches its completion in a single celebration of the three Sacraments of initiation:

Confirmation

of the RCIA

Those who want to convert to Catholicism from another faith; (for them, the RCIA is the process through which they will become fullfledged Catholics)

3. Profession of Faith

Baptism

THE THREEFOLD PURPOSE

Eucharist

These individuals may be involved in interfaith marriages or simply are actively involved in a Church of a different denomination and they want to learn more about the Catholic faith in the spirit of unity. The RCIA fills all these needs of those who are searching and inquiring about the Catholic faith. (Taken from the Catechism of the Church)

What is RCIA? Where do you begin?

Well, you just begin from where you are now! Many adults entering the Catholic Church, or those just thinking about it, follow a process known as the RCIA — the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The RCIA process has several distinct stages.

RCIA Stage 1: Just Looking In the inquiry stage, you're just finding out about Jesus, Christianity, and the Catholic Church. Your main task here is to explore and develop your faith enough so you can make an informed initial decision about entering the Catholic Church. The final decision won't come for a long time, when you actually enter the Church at Easter and receive the sacraments of initiation.

RCIA Stage 2: Learning about the Faith In the catechumenate, your faith has begun to develop. Now you need to learn and grow more. You focus on catechesis in this stage: learning about the faith, how to live as a Christian, and developing your interior life. Your job now is to come into closer contact with the Living God and learn more about the Catholic Faith.

RCIA Handbook Thinking of joining the Roman Catholic Church? The Catholic RCIA stages are a good model of basic faith development.

RCIA Stage 3: Getting ready for rebirth! This period of purification and enlightenment is the final stage before receiving the Easter sacraments of initiation into the Church: baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. (Those already baptized with a valid baptism in another Christian church aren't baptized again). This stage of intense reflection calls you to deeper conversion in preparation for your renewal at Easter. This is what the season of Lent is for, but it has a special intensity for you this year as you're entering the Church and receiving the sacraments of initiation.

RCIA Stage 4: Reflecting on the mysteries of the Mass This stage of mystagogy during Easter is for continued reflection on the sacraments you have received at Easter, especially the Eucharist. Specific catechesis on the Mass, the Sacraments, and especially the Eucharist are the focus of this stage. The Mass and the Eucharist are the source and summit of the Christian life in the Catholic Church, and this period is designed to help you understand, appreciate, and live more deeply this center of Catholicism.

If you have any questions regarding this Sacrament, please contact Nick Leeper.

Questions? For additional information about the RCIA curriculum and schedule at Ss Peter and Paul, please contact Nick Leeper. nick.leeper@ spphoboken.com What is the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday like? The Easter Vigil takes place on Holy Saturday, the evening before Easter Sunday. This is the night that "shall be as bright as day" as proclaimed by the Exsultet, an ancient church hymn as we joyfully anticipate Christ's Resurrection The Holy Saturday Liturgy begins with the Service of Light, which includes the blessing of the new fire and the Paschal candle which symbolizes Jesus, the Light of the World. The second part consists of the Liturgy of the Word with a series of Scripture readings. After the Liturgy of the Word, the Catechumens are presented to the parish community, who pray for them with the Litany of the Saints. Next, the priest blesses the water, placing the Easter or Paschal candle into the baptismal water. Those seeking Baptism then renounce sin and profess their faith after which they are baptized with the priest pronouncing the words, "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." After the Baptism the newly baptized are dressed in white garments and presented with a candle lighted from the Paschal Candle. They are then Confirmed by the priest or bishop who lays hands on their heads, and invokes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. He then anoints them with the oil called Sacred Chrism. The Mass continues with the newly baptized participating in the general intercessions and in bringing gifts to the altar. At Communion, the newly baptized receive the Eucharist, Christ's Body and Blood, for the first time. Source: www.usccb.org

RCIA Handbook

The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions By Mike Aquilina & Regis J Flaherty You know a lot about the Catholic Church, or maybe you are just learning, but there are things that confuse you - like what to do when you pray a novena, or how to "offer up" something, exactly what the Angelus is, or any of the dozens of other devotions that set Catholics apart from other Christians. But help is here! The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions is the only book that not only provides the who, what, where, when, and why of the most time-honored traditions of the Church but also the how. If you want to learn what devotions comprise a truly Catholic life - and share those practices with others - you can't be without The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions.

Open Wide the Doors to Christ: Discovering Catholicism By Lucas Pollice Open Wide the Doors to Christ is a powerful tool for both teachers and students of the Catholic faith. As an excellent resource for RCIA and Adult Faith Formation, this insightful book discusses the basics of the Catholic faith -- and how we can live it fully. As the "meat and potatoes" of Catholicism, it is an introduction to the Church's teachings on the Creed, the sacraments, the moral life, prayer and much more -- with particular focus upon those who are seeking to become Catholic. Presented in a way that adults from all walks of life can understand, the book challenges readers to dig deeper and to continue to grow in their understanding of Christ and the Catholic Church.

Catechism of the Catholic Church The word catechesis describes the work of the Catholic Church “to make disciples, to help men believe that Jesus is the Son of God so that believing they might have life in His name, and to educate and instruct them in this life, thus building up the body of Christ” (from the Prologue). The word catechism means “instruction”. The Catechism of the Catholic Church instructs us on the teachings of the Church. It is a great reference book which contains a complete summary of what Catholics throughout the world believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of the saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments) and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is, as Pope John Paul II calls it, "a special gift." This English version of the Catechism is a handy compact size and is a complete and updated edition which contains modifications from the Editio Typica - the official Latin version of the Catechism.

Why Do Catholics Do That? A Guide to the

Teachings and Practices of the Catholic Church By Kevin Orlin Johnson In Why Do Catholics Do That? renowned scholar and religion columnist Kevin Orlin Johnson hopes to clarify the distinction between faith and its expression, whether that expression is visual or verbal. He takes a look at the basics of the faith and how it is manifested in worship. He also answers the most frequently asked questions on Catholic faith, worship, culture, and customs. Why Do Catholics Do That? blends religious history and a deep appreciation for art with an enlightened reverence for tradition. This is the definitive resource for all who wish to better understand the rituals and symbols of the Catholic faith.
