Sunday Reflection 19th Sunday of Ordinary Time “Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” -1 Kings 19:7

Jesus knows that our stewardship journey will be difficult; we are not designed to do it on our own. Fortunately, Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all – the gift of the Eucharist; His own body and blood. When we join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength and courage to be His joyful disciples.

Sharing God's Blessings One Body, One Mission In his first letter to the Church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul shares deep insight into the great gift given to us in Baptism. As Christians, we are members of Christ's Body. Though many and each unique, our unity is rooted in the mission entrusted to the Church by Jesus Christ - namely, to proclaim the Good News, to pass on the Faith to the next generation through formation and the celebration of the Sacraments, and to care for the poor and most vulnerable. As missionary disciples, we seek to answer the Lord's call each day. Christian stewardship is one way we can respond to the Lord's call, as well as, assist our Church in serving those entrusted to its physical and spiritual care. Through the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal, the Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Newark comes together in support of ministries and programs which provide social, educational, and spiritual support throughout Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties.

Our goal is $79,533 and as of 7/26/18, our pledges total $9,337.00

We Are Living Stones The We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign is a historic initiative that will ensure that we, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, will remain a strong, vibrant and faithful Church for years to come. We know that the greatest treasure is our Catholic Faith; the source of our strength and nourishment as we journey through life. This campaign is primarily focused on just that; the spiritual growth and development of the people of this great Archdiocese. As generations past have solidified their legacy, your generosity towards the We Are Living Stones Campaign will create a legacy for this generation. This legacy of Faith will be passed onto the next generation to accept, cherish, and carry into the future.

Our goal is $735,560 and as of 7/26/18, our pledges total $234,699.05 We hope you will join us again in support of these important efforts.

Planning the Funeral Mass

Reading Selections:

The family may request passages from sacred Scripture as the First Reading, Psalm, and Second Reading for the Funeral Mass or Memorial Service. A list of these approved readings can be found in this handbook (see next page). Specific Gospel readings may be requested as well, but approved at the discretion of the Priest celebrating the Funeral. Please inform the Funeral Director of any reading selections you’d like to feature during theLiturgy.

Music Selections:

When selecting music for a Funeral, we encourage you to pick pieces that speak to you and have a special significance with regard to your departed loved one. Ss Peter and Paul has provided an approved list of songs which your family may choose from (see next page). To maintain the sanctity of this Catholic rite, music from Broadway musicals, popular music, or other secular selections are not permitted. The Music Director will serve as the pianist/organist and oversee all music and musicians present at Funeral services. A cantor is provided by the church to lead the congregation in song. Guest singers or instrumentalists may be permitted to participate in the Liturgy with the approval and collaboration of the Music Director. Please inform the Funeral Director of any music selections you would like to feature during the Liturgy.

Family Participation: Family members and friends of the deceased are welcome to

participate in several ways during the Funeral Mass, either by serving as a readers for the First Reading or Second Reading, or as Gift Bearers. Please provide names of those willing to participate to the Funeral Director, who will inform our parish staff of a loved one’s role in the Funeral Mass.

If you can't decide . . . Decisions can be hard to make while experiencing the grief and sorrow that many feel after losing a loved one. Should you feel overwhelmed or unsure of any music or reading selections, the church will provide a beautiful service with readings and music selected for you.

Ss Peter & Paul Recommends

Eulogy Policy, Archdiocese of Newark: According to the Order of Christian Funerals, “A brief homily based on the readings is always given by the Priest after the Gospel reading at the Funeral Liturgy and may also be given after the readings at the vigil service; but there is never to be a eulogy.” (OCF, 27) In the Archdiocese of Newark, no eulogies are to take place within the context of any of the Funeral liturgies including the vigil service, Funeral Mass or the rite of committal. Eulogies may be delivered during the time of visitation outside of the vigil service itself or at the cemetery following the rite of committal. Concerning the use of a national flag as a pall, Archdiocese of Newark: In the Rite of Funerals, a pall is placed over the coffin when the body is received at the church. The white pall serves as an extension of the baptismal garment given to a deceased person at his or her baptism —a sign of the Christian dignity of the person. Often caskets are draped with a national flag. This use of a national flag signifies honors paid by the nation to one of its soldiers or veterans. Any national flags or the flags or insignia of associations to which the deceased belonged are to be removed from the coffin at the entrance of the church. They may be replaced after the coffin has been taken from the church. National flags or the flags or insignia of association to which the deceased belonged are more appropriately incorporated into the graveside rites. In addition only Christian symbols may rest on or be placed near the coffin during the Funeral Liturgy. Any other symbols, for example, national flags, or flags or insignia of associations, are not included in the Funeral Liturgy. Since we have now justifed by His Blodd, we will be saved through Him from the wrath Where sin increased, grace overflowed all the more. We too might live in newness of life. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. So too in Christ shall all be brought to life. We have a building from God, eternal in heaven. He will change our lowly bodies to conform to His golry. Thus we shall always be with the Lord. If we have died with Him, we shall live with Him. We shall see Him as He is. We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brother.
