St Anne’s News

St Anne’s School, Cnr Curlew Cres. & Lowry St. Nth Albury Ph: 6025-1281 Email: [email protected] Website: sanaww.catholic.edu.au Dear Parents, On Friday we celebrated Bongiorno Day, recognising Father Bongiorno the patron of Red House. We also couple this celebration with our Gift Giving Mass for Vinnies. Due to the inclement weather, the children celebrated with a liturgy in our Hall, led by Mrs Foley. The school captains and I attended the Parish Mass and presented Anthony Foley from Vinnies with all our donated gifts. He was overwhelmed by our generosity and assured us that there are many families in our community who are in need, and will benefit from our donation. So I thank all of you who were so generous in your giving. Unfortunately, due to the severe weather warnings on Saturday, our Year 6 team withdrew from the VEXIQ robotics competition in Wangaratta. This was actually a National qualifying event and we have received notification, that given so many teams withdrew, there will be some rescheduling and further opportunity to attend a qualifying event. No dates have been set at this stage. This week we again have many activities happening within the school. The Infants will participate in their Swimming Program, Stage 3 will attend their end of year excursion on Thursday and we are hosting a Year 5 leadership day in our Hall on Friday, where students from our Deanery will attending. Please be reminded that our 2017 School AGM is tomorrow evening in our Library at 6pm. Sunday marked the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of waiting, preparation and of excitement and anticipation when we get ready for the great feast of Christmas. It provides us with the opportunity to recall, reflect and reconcile. It is an invitation for us to set aside time to think about the presence of God in our own lives. Continuing to build on our own Christian traditions during this season teaches our children what is truly special about Christmas. The following is a prayer I have taken from Sunday’s parish bulletin: Prayer for Lighting the First Advent Candle at Home: Lord, be with us now as we gather around this wreath. As we light this candle, may this time together open our eyes to see your love in our lives and in the love of those around us. Help us to be grateful for all of the ways you shine a light in the darkness of our hearts. Let us feel that love from you and be grateful for it. Open our hearts to those who have so much less than we do; those whose lives are so full of pain that they cannot see the light of your love. Show us how to carry that light to other people. Amen. For reflection: How did I bring light into someone’s life today? What person or people do I think need a special light in their lives? Name a light someone brought into my life today.

Advent Advent is a time of waiting. The idea of waiting is not popular in our culture of instant gratification, but it creates in us a new kind of self-discipline that helps us to appreciate the present moment and look to the future with peaceful anticipation. There are a number of ways families can celebrate the season of Advent: Make an Advent wreath and place it in the middle of the dining room table. An Advent wreath consists of a frame holding four candles placed inside a circle of evergreens. The greenery in the wreath symbolizes the promised new life in Jesus. The four candles denote the four Sundays of Advent. There are three purple candles and one rose candle. Purple is a sign of penance, and rose is the color denoting the anticipation of joy. Light a candle on each Sunday evening of Ad-

vent, saying a short prayer. The light of the candles represents the light coming into the world as we prepare to celebrate Jesus' birth. Advent calendars are available at many gift stores. The calendar consists of two pieces of cardboard on top of each other. Twenty-four doors are cut out of the top layer. One door is opened each day from December 1 through December 24, revealing a picture. There is a long tradition in Christian art of depicting the Jesse tree, a symbolic tree or vine with spreading branches on which there are images depicting the genealogy of Jesus. There are several variations of the Jesse tree. In one variation, each ornament has a picture on one side and a Scrip-

ture passage on the other. An ornament is hung on the tree every day during Advent. For more detailed information see: https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/liturgical-year/advent/the-jesse-tree

A Prayer for Advent God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent, As we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
