Philosophy arises out of the persistent effort to respond to the most important and inescapable

QUESTIONS

concerning human life. Philsophy may be studied by those aiming to specialise in the discipine, but it is also relevant for anyone wishing to reflect on any dimension of human life, be it art, science, business studies and economics, politics and law, education or religion. Philosophy develops the skills of critical thinking and logical analysis that enable us to clarify the basic ideas and concepts in different fields of knowledge. It fosters skills of close analysis but also includes wider perspectives on the larger concerns of human existence. It helps to develop the capacity to appreciate the perspectives of other thinkers and different cultures.

Structure OF THE

A Masters in Philosophy at St Augustine is PROGRAMME a part-time programme consisting of 7 modules and an 18 000-word research paper. The degree is offered part-time, with block-release contact. Each module lasts a week, offered four times a year, accommodating the school calendar. In exceptional cases, students may instead take 4 modules and write a 30 000-word dissertation. We also offer Masters and Doctoral Research Degrees in Philosophy assessed by dissertation only. The MPhil by dissertation entails a 50 000-word paper, and the PhD dissertation must consist of approximately 80 000 words.

Core Modules • Dignity of the human person An enquiry into the dignity of the human person is potentially the most crucial and radically foundational investigation relevant to the contemporary world. What we think of dignity has implications for many areas of life: Family, social and political order, education, justice and equality, human rights, the human good and culture. • Foundational Philosophy 1: Philosophy of knowledge An investigation into the nature, extent, limits, sources, foundations and justification of human knowing, along with the social and cultural contexts of knowing. • Foundational Philosophy II: Philosophy of being This investigates the ground, sources and causes, categories and modalities of being. It examines the metaphysical nature and structure of the universe, the human being and God. • Foundations of ethics Offers a basic overview of moral philosophy.
