JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – March 2018

Staff Attorney Openings The Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) is working for equality, justice, and dignity in our criminal justice system. SCHR’s mission is to end capital punishment, mass incarceration, and other practices that are used to control the lives of poor people, people of color, and other marginalized groups in the Southern United States. We do this through death penalty representation, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and public education. For more information about SCHR, visit www.schr.org. SCHR invites applications for two open staff attorney positions, one in the Capital Litigation Unit (CLU) and the other in the Impact Litigation Unit (ILU). • •

SCHR’s CLU represents individuals facing the death penalty at trial, on direct appeal, and in state and federal habeas cases in Alabama and Georgia. SCHR’s ILU challenges unconstitutional practices within the criminal legal system through federal and state litigation in Alabama and Georgia. The ILU’s work currently includes cases on behalf of people who have faced debtors’ prison practices, prisoners in solitary confinement, and people who have been mistreated by police.

Candidates must have excellent writing and oral advocacy skills and an ability to think strategically and creatively about litigation. SCHR seeks new team members who take initiative, respond to rapidly changing demands with flexibility, and have a demonstrated track record of grace under pressure. Teamwork is a critical part of SCHR, so candidates must have skill and comfort working collaboratively with colleagues. A positive demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills are desired. Frequent travel within Georgia and Alabama is required. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to working with low income communities and communities of color and a keen awareness of the class and racial issues underlying the criminal legal system. Fluency in Spanish is welcomed. Salary is commensurate with experience, within SCHR’s modest, public interest salary range of $40,000 $70,000. SCHR offers an excellent, 100% premium paid benefit package including medical, dental, vision care, and life insurance. Additional benefits include modest stipends for transportation and wellness, access to a flexible spending account, and childcare assistance (if eligible). Minimum three-year commitment required. Driver’s license is required. Start date is negotiable. TO APPLY: Deadline to apply is April 4, 2018. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE. Email [email protected] with the following: • • • • •
