Copyrights A copyright is a property right, comprised of a set of legally enforceable privileges, granted for a limited term by law to the creators of artistic works such as songs and recordings. The exclusive rights vary depending on the type of creation, but the most important is the right for musicians to make and sell copies of their creations along with the exclusive rights to publicly perform it.

The U.S. Copyright Act gives copyright owners the right to control the use of their compositions in the following ways: • Reproduction of the works in copies or phonorecords • Distribution of the work for sale/stream to the public • Public performance of the work • The creation of derivative works based upon the copyrighted work • Display of the work in printed form, such as sheet music The copyright process can be long and tedious, and if done incorrectly in any way, can be made null and void in properly protecting your music. There are also many phony websites out there claiming to be an official copyright resource, and you need to be very careful when going about this process to not waste your time, money, or worse, risk your unprotected intellectual property.
