School History Under the direction of the Pallottine Fathers and the School Sisters of St. Francis, Pius XI Catholic High School, named in honor of Pope Pius XI, was founded in 1929. Originally, only the first three years of high school curriculum were offered until 1937 when the school held its first official graduation for a charter class of eight seniors. The school began earning its national reputation early on in its history. In 1937, the University of Wisconsin placed Pius XI on the accredited list of state high schools. Further accreditation was given to Pius XI in 1953 when the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools added Pius XI to their list of accredited high schools. As years passed, an ever-increasing student population necessitated larger facilities. The original section of the current building opened in September 1949. A six-story addition was completed in the spring of 1957. Decades later in fall of 1998, construction and renovation of the existing space yielded a new library media center, chapel, office space, and multi-purpose lobby area. A new home for family and consumer education classes emerged along with an enhanced audio-visual center (complete with a recording studio) and 11 new science labs/classrooms.

Its 55 international students represent four continents and seven countries. Pius XI is truly a place for everyone. The school began evolving to true independent status with the establishment of an independently functioning Board of Directors in 1989. Opportunities and Challenges The education environment in and around Greater Milwaukee is extremely competitive, especially for Catholic secondary schools. “Choice Programs” have enabled parents to explore a wide range of educational options—public, private, and charter—creating a new generation of competitors for Pius XI. Pius XI is the largest coeducational Catholic high school in the region and is the school of choice for many families seeking a high performing, coeducational experience infused with Catholic values. This positions Pius XI as an extremely important educational institution in the region. Candidates should be mindful of the following opportunities and challenges that await the next President: 1. As mentioned above, Pius XI exists in a highly competitive education market with many outstanding public and private institutions. While enrollments have fluctuated within a tolerable range, the board sees a potential inflection point for the school under new entrepreneurial leadership. The next President will be expected to raise the profile and compelling value proposition of the school while differentiating Pius XI effectively from other choices available to local families. 2. Pius XI is financially stable and well capitalized, with modest debt and a healthy balance sheet. The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to improve the financial condition of the school by substantially growing the school’s modest endowment, thereby enriching the financial resources of the school and enabling greater focus on financial aid for worthy students. The next President will have an opportunity to work with a motivated board in achieving these new and important financial objectives. 3. The most recent strategic plan was implemented in 2012. There is currently no strategic plan in place for the school. The next President will have an opportunity to drive this visioning process and bring the community together around bold new aspirations.

Desired Qualities and Qualifications of the Next President Pius XI operates in the President/Principal Leadership Model. This increasingly popular bifurcated leadership structure enables the board to consider President candidates from a variety of missioncritical career platforms such as higher education, other independent or Catholic schools, as well as non-profit foundations, associations, charities, and the like. Although deep domain knowledge of secondary education would be helpful, exceptional leadership qualities and passion for mission are more important qualities in the President position. In addition, the following qualities and qualifications will be expected: • A practicing Catholic will be required—someone who is capable of modeling and promoting Catholic values while welcoming families and students of all faith traditions. • A high profile, relational leader with outstanding institution-building skills is also critical at this time. • The board is also seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader—someone who can craft a bold new vision for the school and grow enrollments by “creating demand” for the unique gifts of a Pius XI education experience. • The President/Principal Model also requires a President who is intrinsically collaborative, respectful of his/her colleagues, and capable of building a strong and enduring team. This is truly an exceptional leadership opportunity, and the members of the board welcome candidates from varied career backgrounds who share their ambitions and can meet the core requirement of the position.

To Apply Interested and qualified candidates should submit electronically in one email and as separate documents (preferably PDFs) the following materials: • • • •
