The GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences is an internationally active research and service institution that is part of the Leibniz Association in Germany. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal States. Our research offices in Cologne are seeking candidates to fill 2 Post-Doc positions in Computational Social Science (TV-L 13, 100%, 4 years) in collaboration with the Web-Science and Web Technology Institute (WeST) at University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany.

The department for Computational Social Science is looking for candidates with a background in applied mathematics, physics, computer science or related fields and an interest in social phenomena and modeling. Strong programming skills and experience in one or several of the following fields are desirable:     

Analysis and mining of web data, social media and/or social streams Large-scale data processing tools and studies Machine learning, clustering and classification algorithms and methods Software and framework development Social modeling and log mining algorithms and techniques

The candidate is expected to conduct cutting-edge research and to develop services in one or several of the following domains:    

Computational social science Social network analysis, network simulations and diffusion Web-Science and Web observatories Data mining and knowledge discovery

The candidates should have completed (or should soon complete) a PhD. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated record of independently designing and conducting research and publishing results in competitive conferences and journals. The open position is intended to serve as a platform for promising young researchers (i) to strengthen and develop their own research profile, (ii) to conduct and publish highly competitive research, (iii) to acquire research grants and (iv) to build and lead their own research group.
