Step One: Know God

Step One: Know God

STEP ONE: KNOW GOD Our Hope for you Today at STEP ONE: KNOW GOD, our hope is to give you an introduction to who Jesus Christ is and the essential habits that enable you to deepen your relationship with Christ. “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7 (NLT)

The Foundation “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.” Colossians 1:15 (NLT) Scripture reveals that Jesus is the truest manifestation of what God is like. How we view God must surrender to what we see in Jesus. “For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.” John 1:17-18 (NLT) Jesus reveals to us that God is a loving Father, who wants to interact with us through grace and truth, not law and legalism (not works and performance). It is man’s response to this free gift of grace that enables him to live the eternal kind of life now and in the life to come. “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.” John 17:3 (NLT) Knowing God is tied to a deep, intimate relationship which can be illustrated by the marriage covenant. Saying “I do” to Jesus is the first step into the Christian life. The stability of any healthy marriage is dependent upon daily choices. These daily choices either support or detract from the original vows. When our choices match the actions of Christ, we are engaging in eternal life. “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NLT) 1

Step One: Know God

Every New Believer’s Next Step Following Jesus in water baptism is an outward expression of the internal vow we make to follow him. “One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.” Luke 3:21-22 (NLT)

Essential Habits • Bible Study and prayer “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 (NLT)

• Living a Spirit-filled and Spirit-led life “A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.” Acts 2:43 (NLT) •

Giving of ourselves “They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.” Acts 2:45 (NLT)

Breaking of Bread and Fellowship with other believers “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 (NLT)

Step One: Know God

Habit One: Bible Study & Prayer “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT) Bible Study and Prayer sustain a vibrant relationship with God.

HOW DO I DEEPEN MY RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS THROUGH SCRIPTURE READING? 1.

2.

I must ACCEPT its authority. We believe that the Holy Bible is the authoritative written word of God. It alone is the final authority in determining all doctrinal truths. In its original writing, it is inspired, infallible and inerrant. I must

ABSORB its truths. • HEAR God’s Word. “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” Romans 10:17 (NLT)

READ God’s Word. “God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is near.” Revelation 1:3 (NLT)

STUDY God’s Word. “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.” Acts 17:11 (NLT)

MEDITATE

on God’s Word.

“But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.” Psalm 1:2-3 (NLT)

3

Step One: Know God 3.

I must APPLY its principles. “Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.” John 13:17 (NLT)

Gather one truth from your reading to reflect on.

Record what you learn in a journal or share it with someone.

RESPOND to God’s Word with obedience. “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” James 1:22 (NLT)

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24 (NLT)

NURTURING YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH PRAYER

“Always be joyful. Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 (NLT) Jesus exemplified a personal relationship with God through prayer that gave Him great strength. Every person who has ever been effective in service for God has developed this habit. The only way to be a healthy Christian is to spend time with God daily through prayer. 1.

In my daily prayer time, I am:

GIVING devotion to God. “In all that he did in the service of the Temple of God and in his efforts to follow God’s laws and commands, Hezekiah sought his God wholeheartedly. As a result, he was very successful.” 2 Chronicles 31:21 (NLT)

GETTING direction from God. “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”

Psalm 25:4-5 (NLT) •

GROWING in my relationship with God. “O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.” John 17:25-26 (NLT)

4

Step One: Know God 2. Follow Jesus’ example. “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.” Mark 1:35 (NLT) How do we make prayer a part of our everyday life? We can learn three things that Jesus did:

A. A certain TIME . Jesus set aside time for prayer. For our prayer life to grow, we should do the same. Make a daily appointment with God and keep it.

B. A certain PLACE . Your prayer place needs to be an undistracted environment where you can pray out loud and perhaps have some worship music playing in the background.

C.

A certain PLAN . Go into your prayer time with a plan. If it changes, that’s fine. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He gave them a prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, as we call it. This prayer, which can also be an outline for prayer, is a great place to begin a vibrant prayer life.

5

Step One: Know God

Habit Two: Living a Spirit-Filled and Spirit-Led Life “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NLT) Having close relationships with other people is only part of God’s plan for our lives. He desires to be our most intimate friend. The Holy Spirit is the primary person that leads us into a deeper, intimate relationship with God.

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? 1.

The Holy Spirit is a PERSON . “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.” John 14:16 (NLT)

2.

The Third Person of the GOD-HEAD (TRINITY). “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” John 14:26 (NLT)

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN OUR LIVES “Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, ‘Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, ‘Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?’ He replied, ‘The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’” Acts 1:4-8 (NLT)

6

Step One: Know God 1.

2.

The Holy Spirit enables us to know God’s: A.

COMFORT . “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” John 14:16 (KJV)

B.

CONVICTION . “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.” John 16:5-8 (NLT)

The Holy Spirit empowers us to live with Christ-like: A.

CHARACTER . “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)

B.

POWER . “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (KJV)

7

Step One: Know God

3.

The Holy Spirit equips us with:

A.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS . “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other...” 1 Corinthians 12:4 (NLT)

B.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION . when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” John 14:26 (NLT) “But

The Holy Spirit speaks to us through: • Dreams “I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. your old men will dream dreams. . . “Acts 2:17a (NLT) •

Visions “And your young men will see visions” Acts 2:17b (NLT)

The Word “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 (NLT)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” John 16:13 (NLT)

8

Step One: Know God

HOW DO I LIVE A SPIRIT-FILLED AND SPIRIT-LED LIFE? 1.

Request THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT . “You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” Luke 11:11-13 (NLT)

2.

Receive Him BY FAITH . “You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.” Matthew 21:22 (NLT)

3.

Connect with Him DAILY . “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NLT) •

Guides us into all truth

Step One: Know God

Habit Three: Giving of Ourselves The Gospel is the ultimate demonstration of God’s generous nature towards mankind. The Bible consistently teaches that God blesses us so that we may bless others. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NLT) “They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.” 2 Corinthians 8:5 (NLT)

AREAS OF GIVING 1.

Give of our TIME . “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.” Ephesians 5:15-16 (NLT)

2. Give of our TALENT . “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT) 3.

Give of our TREASURE . “If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.” Romans 12:8 (NLT) “Yes, you should tithe, but do not neglect the more important things.” Matthew 23:23 (NLT)

BENEFITS OF GIVING 1.

Giving draws us CLOSER to God. “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21 (NLT)

2. Giving is the remedy to MATERIALISM . “Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.” 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NLT)

10

Step One: Know God 3. Giving strengthens our FAITH . “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding…Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.” Proverbs 3:5, 9-10 (NLT) “So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.” James 2:17 (NLT) 4. Giving is an investment in ETERNITY . “Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.” 1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NLT)

BIBLICAL GENEROSITY IS • • • •

WILLING CHEERFUL SACRIFICIAL HOPEFUL

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure, for God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 2 Corinthians 9:7-8 (NLT)

11

Step One: Know God

Habit Four: Breaking of Bread and Fellowship with Other Believers “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25 (NLT) God never intended for us to go through life alone. Throughout the Bible, we see the importance of being in community. In fact, authentic life-change happens in the context of relationships. At Victory Life Church, we believe our church must grow LARGER and SMALLER at the same time. “They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.” Acts 2:46-47 (NLT)

THE BREAKING OF BREAD IN COMMUNION “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.’ For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NLT)

What is Communion? 1. It is a

SIMPLE ACT

.

“The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread...” (vs. 23) 2. It is a

REMINDER

.

“...and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; eat it in remembrance of me.’” (vs. 24) 3. It is a

SYMBOL

.

“In the same way, He took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; drink it to remember me.’” (vs. 25) 4. It is a STATEMENT OF FAITH

.

“For whenever you eat the bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes back.” (vs. 26)

FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHER BELIEVERS THROUGH LIFE GROUPS How can our church grow larger yet maintain close relationships? Every member needs to be a part of a

LIFE GROUP

.

WHY ARE LIFE GROUPS IMPORTANT? Life Groups provide opportunities for: 1.

BIBLE STUDY . I need people to strengthen and balance the Word of God in my life.

2.

FELLOWSHIP . I need people who really know me.

3.

PRAYER . I need people to pray for me personally.

4.

SUPPORT . I need people who will stand with me.

ESSENTIAL HABITS OF A HEALTHY BELIEVER Personally and Corporately “But the LORD’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken.” Psalm 33:11 (NLT) “This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed.” Acts 13:36 (NLT) 1. STEP TWO: KNOW VICTORY LIFE OUR HOPE FOR YOU Today at STEP Two: Know Victory Life, our hope is to give you a basic introduction to our church family. This session is designed to explain who we are and what we believe. We’re glad you have chosen to find out more about Victory Life Church!

Step Two: Know Victory Life

PART ONE:

OUR BELIEFS “Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith: Christ was revealed in a human body and vindicated by the Spirit. He was seen by angels and announced to the nations. He was believed in throughout the world and taken to heaven in glory.” 1 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

2

Step Two: Know Victory Life

STATEMENT OF FAITH Victory Life Church proclaims the Apostles’ Creed as our statement of faith. This creed dates back as early as the first and second centuries when Christians came together and composed this formative and definitive statement. The Apostles’ Creed has stood the test of time as a standard of what Christians from every stream of the Body of Christ believe. It is more than an intellectual checklist of doctrine; it is a confession of worship that forms us as the people of God and draws us together into the life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Apostles’ Creed We believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead.
On the third day, He rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OUR MISSION Building Healthy Churches that are growing people in Christ.

Step Two: Know Victory Life

OUR VALUES Loving God, Loving People, Serving Both We LOVE as Christ loves. We love the Word of God and people more than our traditions and opinions.

The Word We love God, who reveals Himself through Jesus (the Living Word), by the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures (the written Word). The Word (Jesus Christ) is the foundation of, and filter for, everything we believe and do.

Integrity We understand our daily lives represent Christ. We are His witnesses through our Christ-like love, and our personal character and faithfulness. We are a church who walks in integrity.

Relationship We believe being the church is about relationship, not religion (rules, regulations, rituals). Therefore, we embrace you where you are, while helping you become who God has created you to be. We commit to relationship versus religion.

Family Jesus revealed family is near and dear to the heart of God. He is our Father, and we are His children. We as a church commit to strengthening your family, therefore strengthening the family of God. We are a family, and we serve families.

Generosity We believe God is our true provider; we are blessed to be a blessing, and we reap what we sow. Because of this, we commit never to manipulate or condemn you into giving or serving. Being generous is who we are, not just what we do.

Generational God acts generationally. Longevity and faithfulness to every generation are more important to us than short-term success. Young or old, you are welcomed and valued, and there is a place for you to serve. We are generational. We think, act, and plan generationally.

4

Step Two: Know Victory Life

PART TWO:

OUR STRUCTURE “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people… But be sure that everything is done properly and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:33, 40 (NLT)

5

Step Two: Know Victory Life

Victory Life Church Leadership Covenant INTRODUCTION We, the leaders of Victory Life (those who are an example for others to follow), in order to establish God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, form a healthier body of believers, secure the blessing commanded upon those who walk in unity, ensure a legacy of peace and prosperity for the next generation, and restore respect and honor for God’s government and authorities on earth, do ordain and establish this covenant.

We will work together as a leadership team governed by three core spiritual principles: Unity, Honor, and Trust. UNITY How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron’s head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. And there the LORD has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting.” Psalm 133:1-3 (NLT) 1. We will not participate in nor be a party to church splits.

• • • • •

▪ Ephesians 4:1-3 We agree not to cause or allow division in the Body of Christ. ▪ 1 Corinthians 12:25 The reproach that’s been brought on Christ through arguing, fussing, and fighting must come to an end. 1 Corinthians 3:3 The consequences of disunity are too costly. ▪ James 3:16, Romans 16:17 Unity is defined within diversity, not conformity.

6

Step Two: Know Victory Life 2. We bind together relationally in which divorce is no option.

• We must learn to disagree agreeably. ▪ Mark 10:9; Ephesians 2:19-22; Colossians 2:19; Psalm 92:13 • We will work out and walk out our differences, walking together in covenant relationship. ▪ Ephesians 4:1-3 • The church has suffered because we church hop. ▪ We commit into a new body, and when things get tough, we then quit and leave. ▪ 2 Timothy 2:2 ▪ We then remarry into another body. Unfortunately, we carry all our hurts, disappointments, and frustrations into that relationship, and it fails too. ▪ Proverbs 6:27; Ephesians 5:31; 1 Corinthians 6:15-17

HONOR “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Romans 12:10 (NLT) “Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.” Romans 13:7 (NLT) 3. We agree to submit to and not undermine God-given, God-appointed

authority. ▪ Hebrews 13:17 • To have authority, one must be under authority. ▪ Matthew 8:5-10 • As God establishes rank and order, we will flow together in grace and love ▪ Exodus 18:21; Romans 13:1 • Authority is for edification, not destruction; we will love, respect, and serve all, rather than abuse and harm. ▪ Matthew 20:25-28; 2 Corinthians 10:8; Romans 13:8-10 4. We commit to further the Kingdom of God and not build our own.

• •

Philippians 2:20-21; Matthew 6:33 God’s Kingdom purpose is superior to our personal agendas.

7

Step Two: Know Victory Life

TRUST “Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.” 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NLT) 5. We will remain open to correction from those who love us.

• •

▪ Proverbs 19:20; Luke 17:3-4; Proverbs 27:5-7; Proverbs 9:7-9 While trust is something earned and built, we must commit to the process. Trust is developed as we come to know one another and involves being open, honest, vulnerable, and transparent.

6. We will not receive accusations against one another.

• •

We must have one another’s backs to have effective, long-term ministry. ▪ Revelation 12:10; 1 Timothy 5:19 We commit to protect one another from our hearts turning against each another.

7. We commit to the “5 Day Rule” concerning offenses.

• •

We commit to resolve biblically any offense within five days. ▪ Matthew 18:15 We will deal with all offenses internally. We will not go to others.

Step Two: Know Victory Life

Victory Life Church Government Believers who invest their hearts, time, families and finances in the building of a local church deserve to have confidence in church leadership. People are looking for leaders who conduct themselves with integrity and respect when making decisions that affect their lives. Victory Life is one church in multiple locations. Our church government is led, overseen and strengthened by these three groups:

1. LED BY

Senior Pastor & Governing Elders

.

The Senior Pastor and Governing Elders provide the overall vision, accountability and spiritual direction of Victory Life Church. The Governing Elders are a team of long-term, trusted individuals who provide support, accountability, and vision for our Senior Pastor.

2. OVERSEEN BY

Executive Pastors

.

The Executive Pastoral Team oversees the general functions and operations of the ministry. They provide counsel to the Senior Pastor regarding the business administration, pastoral care and general health of the church.

3. STRENGTHENED BY

Local Pastors

.

The Local Pastors are responsible for implementing the overall vision at their location. They provide leadership to campus staff and oversee the day-to-day ministry and operations of their location.

PART THREE:

OUR ECOSYSTEM “I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.” 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)

10

The Four Parts of Our Ecosystem “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (NLT) The Ecosystem is the best way we have found to describe the environment we are striving to create that gives people the most opportunities to grow and mature in their walk with Christ. We cannot make people grow; we cannot make people mature. However, we can create an environment/atmosphere (Ecosystem) that cause people to want to grow. At Victory Life Church, we organize ourselves around these four environments: • • • •

I.

WORSHIP . . . . . . . .Weekend Services COMMUNITY . . . . . Life Groups SERVING . . . . . . . . . Grow Teams NEXT STEPS . . . . . .Four Steps to Growth

WORSHIP

Weekend Services

.

We consider reaching people one of our greatest responsibilities. Our weekend services serve people at all stages in their spiritual journey.

WEEKEND SERVICES Our Weekend Services focus on four values: 1.

CELEBRATION . “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the LORD.’” Psalm 122:1 (NLT) “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (NLT)

2.

INSPIRATION . “Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.” Psalm 22:3 (NLT)

11

Step Two: Know Victory Life

II.

3.

PREPARATION . “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-12 (NLT)

4.

SALVATION . “For ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’ But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:13-14 (NLT)

COMMUNITY

Life Groups

.

Real life change happens in the context of relationships – Life Groups. In the Bible, they worshiped in the temple, but ministry happened house to house. “I never shrank back from telling you what you needed to hear, either publicly or in your homes.” Acts 20:20 (NLT)

HOW LIFE GROUPS WORK Our Life Groups meet once a week in places all around our city and provide a place for you to connect, grow, and discuss the issues and challenges of life. Regardless of your age, interest, or location, we are sure there is a group out there for you. Life Groups are also where we pray, care for one another. We are missed if we don’t show up! If you would like to join a Life Group, simply visit our website and check out the online directory of groups or visit the Information Center at your campus. We would love for you to get connected. There are three things you should know about Life Groups: 1. They are “Free Market” groups. Our groups are as varied as we are; group leaders use their gifts and passions to create a group that allows others to join with them in serving God. Whatever the age, interest, or location there is a group that is just right for you. 2. We have three semesters every year. New groups start and stop three times a year - spring, summer, and fall semesters. Each semester is kicked off with an online registration and a new Life Group Directory. 3. You can host a group. We believe that everyone has areas of strength and gifting that could benefit others. The first step in becoming a Life Group leader is to attend the Life Group Leader Training. These classes are offered throughout the year-round to give you an overview of what it takes to start a group. You’ll discover that it’s easier than you think.

Step Three: Know Your Gifts

DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY D “D”s are direct and decisive; they are risk takers and problem solvers. They are more concerned with completing tasks and winning than they are with gaining approval from people. Though the internal drive tends to make them insensitive to those around them, “D”s are not afraid to challenge the status quo, and they thrive when it comes to developing new things. They need discipline to excel, and they respond to direct confrontation. The greatest fear of a “D” is to be taken advantage of, and even despite their possible weaknesses—which include an aversion to routine, a tendency to overstep authority, an argumentative nature, and a habit of taking on too much—they place a high value on time and use their innovative thinking to accomplish difficult tasks and conquer challenges.

D/I “D/I”s are curious concluders who place emphasis on the bottom line and work hard to reach their goals. They are more determined than they are inspirational, yet their high expectations and standards for themselves and those around them typically causes them to make quite an impact, motivating others to follow them. They have an array of interests and can become distracted by taking on too many projects. They often need to focus, prioritize, and simply slow down. Because “D/I”s thrive on activity and forward motion, they like to accomplish tasks through a large number of people.

I “I”s are inspiring and impressive. Enthusiastic, optimistic, impulsive, and emotional—they tend to be creative problem solvers and excellent encouragers. They often have a large number of friends, but they can become more concerned with approval and popularity than with getting results. An “I”s greatest fear is rejection, but they thrive when it comes to motivating others. Their positive sense of humor helps them negotiate conflicts. Though they can be inattentive to details and poor listeners, they can be great peacemakers and effective teammates when they control their feelings and minimize their urge to entertain and be the center of attention. They value lots of human touch and connection.

I/D “I/D”s are persuaders who are outgoing and energetic. They enjoy large groups and use their power of influence to attain respect and convince people to follow their lead. Sometimes they can be viewed as fidgety and nervous, but it comes from their need to be a part of challenges that have variety, freedom, and mobility. “I/D”s could benefit from learning to look before they leap and spending more time being studious and still. They make inspiring leaders and know how to get results from and through people.

S “S”s are steady and more reserved. Because they are stable and predictable, they do not like change, and they thrive in secure, nonthreatening environments. They are often friendly and understanding as well as good listeners and loyal workers who are happy doing the same job consistently. With an incredible ability to forgive, reliable and dependable “S”s tend to make the best friends. Their greatest fear, however, is loss of security, and their possible weaknesses naturally include not only resistance to change, but also difficulty adjusting to it. They can also be too sensitive to criticism and unable to establish priorities. To avoid be taken advantage of, “S”s need to be stronger and learn how to say “no.” They also like to avoid the limelight, but when given an opportunity to genuinely help others, they will gladly rise to the occasion. They feel most valued when they have truly helped someone.

S/D “S/D”s are quiet leaders who can be counted on to get the job done. They perform better in small groups and do not enjoy speaking in front of crowds. Though they can be soft- and hard-hearted at the same time, they enjoy close relationships with people, being careful not to dominate them. Challenges motivate them, especially ones that allow them to take a systematic approach. Because this personality style tends to be determined, persevering through time and struggles, they benefit from encouragement and positive relationships.

C “C”s are compliant and analytical. Careful and logical lines of thinking drive them forward, and accuracy is a top priority. They hold high standards and value systematic approaches to problem-solving. Though they thrive when given opportunities to find solutions, they tend to ignore the feelings of others and can often be critical and downright crabby. Verbalizing feelings is difficult for them, but when they are not bogged down in details and have clear-cut boundaries, they can be big assets to the team by providing calculated “reality checks.” The “C”s biggest fear is criticism, and their need for perfectionism is often a weakness, as is their tendency to give in when in the midst of an argument. However, they are thorough in all activities and can bring a conscientious, even-tempered element to the team that will provide solid grounding. They value being correct the most.

C/D “C/D”s are cautious and determined designers who are consistently task-oriented and very aware of problems. Sometimes viewed as insensitive, they do care about individual people but have a difficult time showing it. They often feel they are the only ones who can do the job the way it needs to be done, but because of their administrative skills, they can bring plans for change and improvements to fruition. “C/D”s have a tendency to be serious and could benefit from being more optimistic and enthusiastic. Despite their natural drive to achieve, they should concentrate on developing healthy relationships and simply loving people. Biblical Examples: Bezalel (Exodus 35:30-36, 8, 37:1-9), Jochebed (Exodus 1:22-2:4), Jethro (Exodus 2,18)

Biblical Examples: Joshua (Joshua 1), Noah (Genesis 6-9), Sarah (Genesis 16, 1 Peter 3:6)

Biblical Examples: John the Baptist (Luke 3), Peter (Matthew 16 and 26, Acts 3), Rebekah (Genesis 24)

Biblical Examples: Martha (Luke 10:38-42), Job (Job 1:5, James 5:11)

Step Three: Know Your Gifts

DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALITY D/S “D/S”s are attainers and achievers with an ability to persevere. They are more active than passive, but they possess a kind of calm sensitivity and steadiness that makes them good leaders. They seem to be people oriented but can easily be dominant and decisive when it comes to tasks and project planning. They strive to accomplish goals with a fierce determination that comes from strong internal drive, but they could benefit from contemplative and conservative thinking as well as spending more time focusing on relationships.

D/C “D/C”s are challengers and can either be determined students or defiant critics. Being in charge is important to them, yet they care little about what others think as long as they get the job done. They have a great deal of foresight and examine every avenue to find the best solution; they prefer to work alone. Though they fear failure and the lack of influence, they are motivated by challenges and can often be excellent administrators. They can benefit from learning to relax and paying more attention to people.

Biblical Examples: Daniel (Daniel 1-6), Job (Job 1:5, James 5:11), Martha Biblical Examples: Malachi (Malachi 4), Nathan (2 Samuel 12:1-13), (Luke 10:38-42) Nahum (Nahum 1-3) I/S “I/S”s are influential counselors who love people, and it’s no surprise that people love them. They live to please and serve, and they tend to be good listeners. Looking good and encouraging others is important to them, as is following through and being obedient. They often lack in the area of organization and can be more concerned with the people involved than they are with the task at hand. However, they can be center stage or behind the scenes with equal effectiveness, and they shine when it comes to influencing and helping others.

I/C “I/C”s are inspiring yet cautious assessors who are excellent communicators through the combination of concerned awareness and appreciation of people. They excel in determining ways to improve production. They tend to be impatient and critical, and they can also be overly persuasive and too consumed by the desire to win. “I/C”s like to work inside the box, and they could benefit from trying new things and caring less about what others think. This personality type often possesses a gift for teaching; they are generally dependable when it comes to paying attention to details and getting Biblical Examples: Barnabas (Acts 4, 9, 11-15), Elisha (1 Kings 19, 2 Kings the job done. 2-3), Nicodemus (John 3, 7, 19) Biblical Examples: Miriam (Exodus 15-21), Ezra (Ezra 7-8), Shunammite Woman (2 Kings 4:8-37) S/I “S/I”s are inspirational counselors who exhibit warmth and sensitivity. Tolerant and forgiving, they have many friends because they accept and represent others well. Their social nature and desire to be likable and flexible make them inclined to be overly tolerant and nonconfrontational. “S/I”s will benefit from being more task-oriented and paying more attention to detail. Kind and considerate, they include others and inspire them to follow. Words of affirmation go a long way with this personality type, and with the right motivation, they can be excellent team players.

S/C “S/C”s are diplomatic and steady, as well as detail-oriented. Stable and contemplative, they like to weigh the evidence and discover the facts to come to a logical conclusion. More deliberate, they prefer to take their time, especially when the decision involves others. Possible weaknesses include being highly sensitive and unable to handle criticism, and they also need to be aware of the way they treat others. Operating best in precise and cause-worthy projects, the “S/C” can be a peacemaker; this makes them a loyal team member and friend.

Biblical Examples: Moses (Exodus 3, 4, 20, 32), John (John 19:26-27), Biblical Examples: Mary Magdalene (Luke 7:36-47), Barnabas (Acts 4, 9, Eliezer (Genesis 24) 11-15), Elisha (1 Kings 19, 2 Kings 2-13) C/I “C/I”s pay attention to the details. They tend to impress others by doing things right and stabilizing situations. Not considered aggressive or pushy, they enjoy both large and small crowds. Though they work well with people, they are sometimes too sensitive to what others think about them and their work. They could benefit from being more assertive and self-motivated. Often excellent judges of character, they easily trust those who meet their standards. They are moved by genuine and enthusiastic approval as well as concise and logical explanations.

C/S “C/S”s are systematic and stable. They tend to do one thing at a time—and do it right. Reserved and cautious, they would rather work behind the scenes to stay on track; however, they seldom take risks or try new things and naturally dislike sudden changes in their environments. Precisionists to the letter, they painstakingly require accuracy and fear criticism, which they equate to failure. Diligent workers, their motivation comes from serving others.

Biblical Examples: Esther (Esther 4), Zechariah (Luke 1), Joseph Biblical Examples: Miriam (Exodus 15-21, Numbers 12:1-15), Ezra (Ezra (Matthew 1:1-23) 7, 8)

people.

People matter to God, so they matter to us. “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT) 2.

relationships with my

TEAM

Real life-change happens, real leaders are developed when we take a step towards intentional relationships. “And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.” Philemon 1:6-7 (NLT) 3.

EMPOWER

each other.

We are a people of purpose, working together on purpose. “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. CELEBRATE

the wins.

There is nothing more powerful than a life changed by Christ. “In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.” Luke 15:10 (NLT)
